• Oct. 29, 2005 - Halloween Woes!

I'm writing this to find out if I'm the only Christian who is very uncomfortable with the subject of Halloween.

The Lord gave me some strong convictions about the celebration of Halloween. I don't feel comfortable doing anything that looks like a Halloween celebration. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with candy or costumes, unless it's part of a Halloween party. This is very difficult to adhere to, since there are so many various opinions on this subject among Christians.

I've chosen to try to shelter my children from evil, until they're able to understand and we can discuss the powers involved. This is very difficult to do during the month of October!

There are many Scriptures to back up my reasoning in avoiding Halloween celebrations:

Deuteronomy 18:20 "...do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Le no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God."

OK, so you say, but we aren't doing these things! But by saying that Halloween is just for fun, are we saying that these practices are fun? There are real people in the world today in this country practicing these ways and they would love to get our children involved. If we say that Halloween is just for fun, what's wrong with these practices...what's wrong is that God calls these practices detestable! Shouldn't we be teaching our children the truth???

We are right there with you...We have very strong convictions on the matter as well. This year has been the hardest for me, interestingly, even though our children (4 and 6) are solidly opposed to Halloween and for the most part we've been so isolated lately I've not had many run-ins in person on the matter. I'm not sure why I have had a more difficult time with it...but I really appreciate your post and the reminder of why we have chosen the narrow way with this particular issue.

Yes, we agree. You know, its been so long that I forget about Halloween unless we go to a store and see the witch display or something.

Several years ago our Pastor suggested a book, and had a few copies on hand. We took one home, and our children read it before we could. They decided before we could even give it thought ... that they wanted nothing more to do with this holiday (holiday my foot ... that means "Holy" day and there is nothing holy about Halloween.

So we just turn off our porch light and carry on as we normally would. No one comes to our door. I really don't have to think about it much at all.

• Oct. 29, 2005 - yes, we know

We know what an unpopular choice it is to NOT DO halloween.
Never have and don't have any regrets! Our kids don't understand it just yet.
It is not easy seeing the disappointment in them, but we know the Lord is just
fine with our decision to pass it up. We can't always do the popular things as Christians. Pleasing the Lord before men (society and our peers) is a life mission for us. Col. 3:23!

• Nov. 1, 2005 - Halloween Article at Titus 2

Hi, Debbie.
Cay Gibson here. : )

My older three have no desire to dress up or "do" Halloween. They think it's silly.
I let my two little girls dress up as princesses or storybook characters and we go to a friend's house for fun and games...where it's safe and stays fun!

Have you read the article by Teri Maxwell of Titus 2?

• Nov. 3, 2005 - What happened to Harvest Night?

Posted by chicksmom2
I am originaly from Ohio, up there it was called Harvest Night when my Mom was a kid. It was an evening of gratefulness to God and sharing extra harvest with the local "poor" kids. The children would come and knock on the doors of the farms or homes that had porch lights on, and receive the extra harvest that that family had to share. Eventualy they would also give the kids candy as an extra treat. This was done all across the midwest.
I avoid all the evilness that has crept into the "Halloween" and celebrate the Harvest, my decorations are harvest related scarecrows, pumpkins (not jack-o-lanterns), etc. And my girls when they were young went as animals or angels, or something christian. I try to not ignore "Halloween" totaly, but pay respect to the original meaning....Harvest Night. I even hand out healthy snacks, like pretzels, nuts, etc. I have learned the neighborhood kids love my snacks! And I have always found a way to include Christ and God in my decorations every year! So I become a witness for the Lord!
That is how I try to keep it holy as it originaly was!
