finishing school for the year

Well, we completed Prairie Primer on April 11. It is bittersweet, because I enjoyed it so much, and I know that next year my oldest boy will be moving on to 6 th grade ....wooohoo hard stuff...

I plan on continuing Math and Spelling for the 4th and 5th graders thru the summer. My K and 1st graders will continue reading and phonics and math thru the summer too. They are both doing well and I want to keep it going ...

Our roof/boys bedroom is being repaired. We had some water damage this winter due to the snow. Today was day 1 of the project. I will be so happy when it is DONE! Our house has been somewhat cluttered since the boys stuff had to be moved out of the room so that the carpet could dry etc.

Oldest dd will be 17 next week and is taking the SAT on May 3. WOW

School has been going well, but I just have not been consistant about posting....

Seeyou  here, there or in the air...Jesus is coming soon!

The Bitter Homeschooler' s Wish ListFrom Secular Homeschooling
Magazine, Issue #1

1 Please stop asking us if it's legal. If it is - and it is - it's
insulting to imply that we're criminals. And if we were criminals,
would we admit it?

2 Learn what the words "socialize" and "socialization" mean, and use
the one you really mean instead of mixing them up the way you do now.
Socializing means hanging out with other people for fun. Socialization
means having acquired the skills necessary to do so successfully and
pleasantly. If you're talking to me and my kids, that means that we do
in fact go outside now and then to visit the other human beings on the
planet, and you can safely assume that we've got a decent grasp of
both concepts.

3 Quit interrupting my kid at her dance lesson, scout meeting, choir
practice, baseball game, art class, field trip, park day, music class,
4H club, or soccer lesson to ask her if as a homeschooler she ever
gets to socialize.

4 Don't assume that every homeschooler you meet is homeschooling for
the same reasons and in the same way as that one homeschooler you know.

5 If that homeschooler you know is actually someone you saw on TV,
either on the news or on a "reality" show, the above goes double.

6 Please stop telling us horror stories about the homeschoolers you
know, know of, or think you might know who ruined their lives by
homeschooling. You're probably the same little bluebird of happiness
whose hobby is running up to pregnant women and inducing premature
labor by telling them every ghastly birth story you've ever heard. We
all hate you, so please go away.

7 We don't look horrified and start quizzing your kids when we hear
they're in public school. Please stop drilling our children like
potential oil fields to see if we're doing what you consider an
adequate job of homeschooling.

8 Stop assuming all homeschoolers are religious.

9 Stop assuming that if we're religious, we must be homeschooling for
religious reasons.

10 We didn't go through all the reading, learning, thinking, weighing
of options, experimenting, and worrying that goes into homeschooling
just to annoy you. Really. This was a deeply personal decision,
tailored to the specifics of our family. Stop taking the bare fact of
our being homeschoolers as either an affront or a judgment about your
own educational decisions.

11 Please stop questioning my competency and demanding to see my
credentials. I didn't have to complete a course in catering to
successfully cook dinner for my family; I don't need a degree in
teaching to educate my children. If spending at least twelve years in
the kind of chew-it-up-and- spit-it-out educational facility we call
public school left me with so little information in my memory banks
that I can't teach the basics of an elementary education to my nearest
and dearest, maybe there's a reason I'm so reluctant to send my child
to school.

12 If my kid's only six and you ask me with a straight face how I can
possibly teach him what he'd learn in school, please understand that
you're calling me an idiot. Don't act shocked if I decide to respond
in kind.

13 Stop assuming that because the word "home" is right there in
"homeschool, " we never leave the house. We're the ones who go to the
amusement parks, museums, and zoos in the middle of the week and in
the off-season and laugh at you because you have to go on weekends and
holidays when it's crowded and icky.

14 Stop assuming that because the word "school" is right there in
homeschool, we must sit around at a desk for six or eight hours every
day, just like your kid does. Even if we're into the "school" side of
education - and many of us prefer a more organic approach - we can
burn through a lot of material a lot more efficiently, because we
don't have to gear our lessons to the lowest common denominator.

15 Stop asking, "But what about the Prom?" Even if the idea that my
kid might not be able to indulge in a night of over-hyped, over-priced
revelry was enough to break my heart, plenty of kids who do go to
school don't get to go to the Prom. For all you know, I'm one of them.
I might still be bitter about it. So go be shallow somewhere else.

16 Don't ask my kid if she wouldn't rather go to school unless you
don't mind if I ask your kid if he wouldn't rather stay home and get
some sleep now and then.

17 Stop saying, "Oh, I could never homeschool!" Even if you think it's
some kind of compliment, it sounds more like you're horrified. One of
these days, I won't bother disagreeing with you any more.

18 If you can remember anything from chemistry or calculus class,
you're allowed to ask how we'll teach these subjects to our kids. If
you can't, thank you for the reassurance that we couldn't possibly do
a worse job than your teachers did, and might even do a better one.

19 Stop asking about how hard it must be to be my child's teacher as
well as her parent. I don't see much difference between bossing my kid
around academically and bossing him around the way I do about
everything else.

20 Stop saying that my kid is shy, outgoing, aggressive, anxious,
quiet, boisterous, argumentative, pouty, fidgety, chatty, whiny, or
loud because he's homeschooled. It's not fair that all the kids who go
to school can be as annoying as they want to without being branded as
representative of anything but childhood.

21 Quit assuming that my kid must be some kind of prodigy because
she's homeschooled.

22 Quit assuming that I must be some kind of prodigy because I
homeschool my kids.

23 Quit assuming that I must be some kind of saint because I
homeschool my kids.

24 Stop talking about all the great childhood memories my kids won't
get because they don't go to school, unless you want me to start
asking about all the not-so-great childhood memories you have because
you went to school.

25 Here's a thought: If you can't say something nice about
homeschooling, shut up!

ouch!

Ouch! I am in pain. Seems I did something to neck and my left arm, I am not even sure how really, but the Dr says I sprained the shoulder muscle and strained the ligaments...The family has been working hard and serving me today...School was taking care of mom, some book work, cooking and raking leaves and lots of Laundry...I think they are all tired.

Introduction: My name is Anna, I am married 11 yrs to Street preacher. We have 6 children together-his 22 yr old USMC ds, mine 16 yr old dd, ours 10 yr old ds, 9 yr old ds, 6 yr old dd, and 5 yr old ds. We live in the Northwest US. We have homeschooled here for 5 yrs now. The oldest was in public school K-12 and next oldest was in public school K-6, then has homeschooled 7th to 11th grade. She is happy to be at home. The others have never been to public school and are in 5th,4th,1st and Kindergarten this year.

I really enjoy the Homeschool Minute emails and I get a tremendous blessing out of them. I belong to a Homeschool group here in Idaho but have not participated much this year due to having a broken down vehicle....

out on the prairie week3

Here we are on the Prairie still, we are learning about the Osage Indians. Not much research on that since our requested library books never came. No crafts either, no moccasin kits. Too bad. We did learn about Kansas and panthers and tee pees, and our names in Chinese (nothing to do with LHP but it was fun anyway) My name is Anna- in Xia Ai Ning. wooo fancy aint it? =-)

We had a lot of rain this week. Daddy was off on Monday, so he took the 4 little ones fishing. They did not catch any fish, but someone gave them 3 rainbow trout. We cooked them for breakfast the next day.... I stayed home with R and we mowed the lawn.  Then I enjoyed some special time alone, coloring my gray/brown hair , turning into a lovely dark brown.=-0  oh yes, we like brown, not ready for the all over gray look yet.......

The older boys got a job raking leaves, so they spent a few hours working on that this week. On Wednesday, I took 2 little girls over to visit 86 yr old Grandma for coffee/cocoa and some chatting ....we had a nice time. On Thursday, it RAINED some more, we got school work done and some friends came over to play games. The boys all played football in the rain.

I researched some Health things this week, GALL bladdar /liver cleansing, YIPEEE. I have been drinking fresh apple juice, lemon juice and making my own green drinks with Kale and carrots all week. I am not having any problems in this area, but just trying to avoid any future problems.

Friday was Library day/field trip but it was raining again and I had to get my haircut.. the library is under construction so we did not get to stay and hang out like we usually do.

Over the river and thru the woods, its a short trip really, to Grandmas house we go. For Saturday and SUnday. Grandma is having birthday cake for Andrew and we hope to visit some friends at church on Sunday...

Live for Jesus! Viva por Jesus! Live for Jesus! Viva por Jesus!

ponderings

Proverbs 17:1 Better is a dry morsel and quietness therewith, than an housefull of sacrifices with strife.

It has come up recently (to me ) that the world around me is busy busy busy, going here and there, at hyperspeed. I read in the papers, I hear on the radio, about families who never eat together, talk together or have time together, except for driving around in a car from one thing to another..to soccer, to violin lessons, to meetings, whatever.  I have had relatives who went to week long meetings, concerts, or 3-4  meetings a week for organizations or clubs, and they think I am a fanatic for going to church Sunday and Wednesday.

I am making an effort to not get into that chaos. I am saying NO to extra activities in hopes that our home will be peaceful, loving and a refuge from a crazy world. Lord willing, I am working to make our home a place that my husband loves to come home to and my children bring their friends to..In the past 2 yrs many temptations (toils , and snares lol) have already come my way, offering to get lessons for this or that or a club for him and a club for her, a class for this and that, offers for jobs- outside family pressure/the social/financial pressure to work a job outside the home. I am making a choice to live in a way that is contrary to what the world says. When the world, the flesh and the devil bother me, I go to the Lord..Isaiah 26:3 Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusteth in thee.

Revelation 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things that remain.

hi again, we had quite a week!  Monday was our church anniversary meeting, the church is 26 yrs old. We had Preachers visiting from all over the Northwest- Oregon, Montana, Idaho and Washington state. We also had missionaries from Chile, Barbados, Kenya, Philippines, and Bolivia. It was so much fun and good fellowship and good food. Monday 1pm to 9pm , Tuesday 7pm and Wed 7pm.

Of course we got some school work done, T/W/Th and Friday was our Field trip/outing day. We went to the Chiropractor, ahh I feel better now....and Shopko, and Joanns (pattern sale!!!! WOO HOO!) then on to  some good old Thrift store shopping. I spent $30 total and we got 3 pairs of snow boots for the 3 boys, a 5 shirts  and 1 sweatshirt for Andrew(he has been growing out of his clothes lately and passing them on to Jon), 1 GAP polo shirt for Caleb, Pajamas for Emily, Jonathan and Andrew. 1 pr jeans and a lightweight jacket for Jonathan. what else, a vest for Andrew, a longsleeve blue shirt for Emily, a plastic lunch tray for Jonathan, and a small candle holder for me. Rachel and RuthAnna shopped quite a bit too, our car was full of bags from all of our shopping. What fun! and we all together probably spent less than $75 !!!!!

Also, a printing company here in our town, gave us a whole BOX of scrap paper for school! Some pink and some white! FREE!

We shopped til we dropped LOL my feet hurt but it was FUN and affordable!

Emily and Jonathans covered wagon, driven by Tigger and Spirit the horse.

Week1 of Little House on the Prairie, so much to learn and so much fun. We learned about their covered wagon ride from Pepin Wisconsin, to the Prairie, just 10 miles or so from Independence Kansas. We learned about Spanish numbers and colors and seasons- El Otono- autumn! We learned about Laura murmuring in her heart, we drew pictures of Pet and Patty , the Mustangs that PA got for them. We had pancakes, with syrup instead of molasses (the Ingalls had molasses), we made dumplings and we learned first aid, when Ma sprained her ankle, we took turns being the "injured" and having ankles wrapped up with ace bandage.  We made our own cardboard box "covered wagons" and the boys did lots of Multiplication. Emily is reading alot on  her own now, she started in Genesis 1 a few months ago, and shejust passed Chapter 3 and Adam and Eve.  We have lots of plums right now, so I am gonna attempt to make plum butter and some plum preserves today.

Ladies retreat: It was nice. Good messages from our speaker. I met 2 new friends and it SNOWED!!!! It was so beautiful to see the snow on the trees the next morning, but then I remembered it was September 29!!!! Too early for SNOW!

beelg1a this  cute stuff comes from http://www.graphicgarden.com

School is going well, We finished Little House in the Big Woods yesterday. We played "musical tree stumps" today, made paper tree stumps and well you know the rest...We also made warning posters regarding Proverbs 17:12 for the last chaper, in which Charlie acts foolishly and gets stung by wasps.

Caleb and Andy are doing well with their planners, completing things on time and not rushed. It is actually working out better than I expected.

Mom's moment: You ever meet a friend and just "click" with them? Or have a friend who you have grown to love more and more? My husband is one of my best friends, I truly love him more today than ever. I also have 2 friends who have been around since my first marriage, Brenda and AnnaO who are very dear to me. For many years I never thought I would have another good friend like they were to me, and since we live so far apart we have now grown apart. I have a few "cyber friends "  that I have known since 2000 and they are special and I know that someday I will meet them in Heaven. There are special people that just are so much fun to be with, we enjoy being together and work together and play together and pray together. Homeschooling is such hard work that sometimes I find myself  resting ALONE in my room with the door shut. I get tired and worn out and just want to have some SPACE. The Lord has given me some special friends that also Homeschool and they know alot how I feel about this, and we can lift eachother up in prayer and encouragement. I am thankful for good friends. I really need you FRIEND!! Thanks for being there....

turn on your speakers and listen to this lovely music, I found it at another hs moms blog..

Well I 've got sick kids today, and my sweetie has a hurt back, but it is a beautiful sunny and cool day here. I just finished sewing a dress for Emily I will see if Rachel will take a picture for me to post later. Here are the pictures:

The leaf is on the lower part of the skirt. Praise the Lord, I couldn't have done it without him!! The buttons are from Aunt Vera,a dear lady who went to be with the Lord a few years ago. She sewed buttons onto cards to keep them neat, and when she died, the buttons were given to Rachel.

Big woods week2

  bowleavesline

Fun Friday! This week has gone by fast.

Dh started a new job on Monday, the paperwork, the testing, the training all went well. By Thursday he was driving on his own. God was good to give him this job.

ok, so back to school . The PP we learned about Mercy, Maple syrup, Animal tracks and scat, Arguing and Foolishness in the Bible, galluses, bear stories, and Laura comparing herself with Mary was not wise (2 Cor 10:12) .In the Laura Ingalls Wilder songbook we learned to sing Pop Goes the Weasel and Buffalo Gals-that was pretty funny.

In Kindergarten and 1st grade "classes" we did the letters L and D handwriting and numbers 1,2,3 and addition. IN 4th and 5th grade we are working on multiplication 1's, 2's, 3's and also square roots. In Spanish the most memorable moment was Andy in his funny spanish accent saying "HOLA GLORIA" and everybody laughing....

THen we had a sad day on Thursday.A friend of ours dog, a German Shepherd, named Drakar, was layed to rest.He was really old and had a brain tumor. He was a special dog to their family and special to us as well. I was very intimidated by Drakar when we first met, but I gradually got more comfortable with him and learned to get along well with him. My oldest dd says Drakar just loved her, but I really think he loved me best LOL. We said hello to new puppies last week, and now we say goodbye to a good canine friend this week.

Thursday also was Super Fall bedroom challenge, we deep cleaned all 4 bedrooms. It was hard work but oh so needed and so nice now! We used a homemade carpet deodorizer (recipe online) of Baking soda, cinnamon and ground cloves. MMM, mmm the house is clean and smells nice.

Friday, we had our field trip day, to see the new Coeur d'alene Public Library. It is nice, so much roomier than the old one and lots of cozy places to sit, couches and chairs and rooms with fireplaces...I could definitely do with out the ART exhibit (The stolen rights of the parents exhibit, oops I mean , the UN rights of the child, what a bunch of hooey....)ok I will get off my soap box now..

so for now i say good bye, Adios Gloria!

Little House in the Big Woods week1

 fall33

Week 1 is complete! It did not go according to my schedule but learning happened at our house!

We had Monday off which started it all weird because I did not plan to have it off, I didn't know that dh was going to be home.

Math, Memorizing Psalm 91, Copywork, Spelling, Reading all were done. Prairie Primer is taking some time to get used to, especially for me. We have had some ups and downs and I am really having to change alot of what I planned. There are just so many activities and I cannot do them all. The children are so tired, they all took a NAP todayLOL even the 5th grader!

We have learned about trundle beds, a brindle bulldog, corn cob doll, Grizzly Bears, Metaphors- LIttle Half Pint of Cider half drunk up!LOL, Yankee Doodle, Typing, Gun Safety, The Bible, Old Yeller, Molasses Candy and corn bread, hog's bladder(we used a balloon!),and freezing/preserving food. WHEW no wonder we are all so tired. And Spanish too!

Plus, oldest dd works at a Dog Grooming/Jack Russell Terrier breeding facility and she left on Tuesday morning to observe a dog having puppies, did not arrive home until Wed am! The dog had some complications and we got to see the 4 puppies today ahhhh so cute!

Homeschool Open House blog

bkln1a

Welcome to my Open House blog. I was invited to the Homeschooling  Open House 2007 http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Tiany/ her blog is called Less of Me More of Him. Him being the Lord Jesus Christ.

My name is Anna and I am married and homeschool 5 children.I am #172 on the list!  My childrens ages are  16 , 10, 8 , 6,  and 5 yrs. I got saved in 1992, and  actually was motivated by another home school mom when I learned what she was doing. I met Donella Meloche, she homeschooled her 3 sons in San Diego CA. I was very impressed with her sons, their manners, their commitment to the Bible and church and it sparked a desire in me to homeschool. I was a single mom at that time and was working full time at a medical center. I was thinking "how can I do this homeschooling thing? working full time and support my daughter?" Shortly after this, I was injured on the job. The DR gave me part time work and I did not get better. Finally, he said thats it, you are taking 4 months off. So I was home with my 3 yr old daughter, Rachel. I started by reading LOTs and LOTs of library books to her, Bible stories and singing songs.

So I have been homeschooling off and on for 16 yrs, since  1991 by Rachel's birthday. My next challenge was when my ex husband decided he did not like this HOMESCHOOling and wanted me to stop. He took me to court in Pennsylvania in 1996 to stop me from homeschooling and a few other things....basically wanted to get custody of my daughter after I had taken care of her myself since she was 9 months old. The court ordered that "the fathers wishes be considered" and I was ordered to place Rachel in public school in Sept 1996. I obeyed the court order, but in my heart I never lost the desire to homeschool.

Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the Lord and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. I later got married and received 4 more children from the Lord! I have a husband who is very supportive and encouraging in our home school adventure and that is a blessing also.

I prayed for 7 yrs that the Lord would open the door for Rachel to come home from public school. In 2002, we moved to Idaho and God finally answered YES to my prayer. In Fall of Sept 2003, Rachel began 7th grade AT HOME. Then 8th, then 9th, then 10th. This year she is in the 11th grade and is glad to be home! Praise the Lord

I began using some odds and ends, then tried Abeka for 1 yr, then tried Rod and Staff for 1 yr. Now we are what you would call Eclectic- we use various different curriculum and ideas. I have read a lot of The Moore's books and Charlotte Mason and I agree with many of their beliefs and ideas. This year we are using:

Rachel 11th grade

Abeka US History

Saxon Algebra 2

Spanish-PBI tapes

Home Ec

I also get alot of good stuff from http://www.homeschoolestore.com

and http://oldfashionededucation.com

We live in a house, when we moved here I designated one of the bedrooms as a "school room" and had the little "school desks" and pretty stuff on the walls and etc. After a few years, the children and I were pretty crowded in that room, so we moved down to the dining room area,we use the kitchen table for table work, the couch for read aloud time  and some kitchen cabinets for storage. We recently got 2 large bookcases to put in the dining room and it stores all of our supplies very nicely and we also have a separate small table for the "kid's computer" and art table. Someday I would like to add on to this house and build a large School room off the back of the house where our deck currently is.

Our Schedule: Well, I used to be a very structured and scheduled person. My husband is NOT and so in 11 yrs I feel I am learning to not be SO scheduled and become more flexible to meet his needs. I think it is a good thing, since sometimes I could get pretty GRUMPY and selfish about having everything MY SCHEDULED WAY! I believe this is something the Lord is working on me about. So, all that to say this, we have a schedule, we have chores, we have prayer and singing and music lessons, but I have come to not be so DRIVEN by my schedule and accept that interruptions happen and sometimes those interruptions are from the Lord !

I believe that boys need exercise and hard manual labor so I try to add these things into their "school day" as much as possible. The girls also do exercise and chores, Rachel and I often do exercise videos together or we all go for walks. Here in Idaho we have beautiful spring and summer and fall for walking, bicycling, camping  etc. but we also haveWinter- and that means  SNOW! and the children are learning to snow board and sled and other snow activites which are alot of fun.

Tips for home school moms: Get an answering machine and use it! Let people know that you will not take calls until after 2pm  or whatever time so that they will respect your school time. This has helped me alot.

Well I hope you enjoyed reading my blog for the Homeschooling Open House 2007 May God bless our Homeschools!
