Science Lessons from Brown

scroll to the bottom of the science lessons webpage (PSO: Providence science outreach) above to find the link for homemade ice cream in a ziplock.  it turns out like soft serve.  we did it for co-op and found the secret--lots of ice.  we didn't have quite enough for everyone to be successful  , but even those children whose final product was too soft enjoyed their "milk shake".  this is not for the faint hearted, though, as it takes 30 minutes of real shaking or flipping of the baggie set-up.  below see some tired out co-op participants.  lisa and i walked around and gave the kids short breaks by taking over for them occasionally.

We did this too! It was fun and the ice cream wasn't too bad either. I have also read that you can put the baggie into a coffee can, put the ice all around, put the lid on and just roll it back and forth.

foreigner: you're right, it can be done and sounds lots easier. only problem for us is no coffee is sold in cans here. in fact, I know of nothing sold in large cans except for gross mushrooms, and then there's no nice reclosable lid... you get the picture!! mish life! which is the reason we couldn't get more ice. they don't sell ice in quantities. ;- D mary

My husband did this at the camp we worked at a couple of years ago. He had similar results. The kids enjoyed it as a hot weather snack, but it was work!

we can't buy ziplocks, either, but lisa makes sure she's stocked up (+ she's generous!). i planned this a year ahead and asked the other mish who had the supplies!!!

for mish folks, please note: it was important to plan on plenty of ziplocks, because we had to cover some of the ziplocks that got holes (all that shaking) with more extras.

We've done a few experiments that have not turned out the way they should have, and my kids have been quite upset!!!! Even with all that shaking your kids look quite gracious about it!
