You don't have to be into history to find these paper dolls amazing.

The United States Historical Society has an ARCHIVE of PAPER DOLLS!

Of course my favorite is Audry Hepbrun, but they have Florence Nightengale and other historical figures too! WOW!

• Dec. 20, 2006 - Any TRUTH to this?? How to sort historical fact from fiction?

Posted in Homeschooling
I have always heard that the tradition of the Christmas tree was pagan and in fact, celebrating Christmas was pagan.

I am NOT trying to start a debate here (just for those of you who are curious we do celebrate Christmas and do have a tree). But I received the following in my mailbox today and am curious just how true it might be.

-=-=-
Martin Luther is said to have had the first Christmas tree. He supposedly cut down a fir from a local forest and placed it in his home for his family to enjoy. He was so taken by the beautiful, dark night with snow reflecting starlight through the trees. He wanted to share it with his wife and children as a way to celebrate the birth of Christ. Once he brought it home, he decorated the tree with small, lit candles to represent the stars. After that, people began to follow his example and it wasn't long before other decorations, such as strings of popcorn, apples, and bits of colored paper were added.
-=-=-

Anyone know how to check the validity of this statement? With so much re-writing of history (not only in America, but it seems all of history is being rewritten), how can one sort historical fact from fiction? We are SO NEW to all this homeschooling. I grew up believing everything you were taught in school is truth and not to be questioned (but then again, that is the purpose of public school isn't it?). But after becoming a Christian and learning about the re-writing of a lot of historical facts, I have no idea where to begin to know fact from fiction.

Thanks for ANY help on this!

(and for those of you who are curious, I never did find out what that bug was! but once we settle into our new house, I plan on reading all of your comments and learning HOW to use those bug books!)

• Dec. 1, 2006 - You know you have watched one too many cooking shows when...

Posted in Homeschooling
My husband has discovered Alton Brown. If you have never heard of or seen Alton Brown, I highly suggest you checking him out. You might even be able to get your library to buy some of his DVD's. If you have the money, youcan buy it cheaper through Target.

Alton Brown talks about the SCIENCE behind cooking. I plan on making these DVD's a part of the girls homemaking curriculum. The one on cookies is FANTASTIC! These DVD's are expecially great for those who want to deviate from recipes but really don't know how. Once you know the science behind why and how certain ingredients act together, you can change the recipe and have it come out! :D

He has a very funny style which really keeps you interested in the show. And once you cook eggs the Alton Brown way, you will never go back!

So how can you tell you have watched too many cooking shows? Your children turn every meal into their own cooking show! My girls are so cute! They have started doing their own cooking shows with each meal. Now of course, they don't know the science behind everything, but it is so cute to watch them.

"First you take the cracker and then you gently spread the oatmeal on it."

"After adding the sauce, toss gently until everything is all mixed together."

At least my girls are learning some cooking terminology. :D

• Jun. 13, 2006 - Family Drawing Time

Posted in Homeschooling
I have been really into crafts lately (trying to find some great things to do for my homesteading site). I came across a GREAT idea of a family drawing time!

I don't know why I never thought of this. I mean, I have always heard of family reading time. And recently I have wanted to start giving the children paper and crayons to color what they are learning/hearing while we are reading (partly so I know that they are listening, and partly to get them in the habit of listening, and partly so that I have some proof for the state of schooling).

• Jun. 7, 2006 - What a GREAT idea!

Posted in Homeschooling
So my daughter has been so enjoying the books that I have been making her. But she discovered something a while back that I forgot to share until I was remembered of it watching a video my husband made for me of a recent homeschool speech.

My daughter had taken a realyl cheap photo album (like the ones you can find at Goodwill for $1). It held 20 4x6 photos. She created a picture and put one in each slot. Then she told a story with the pictures! She had made her own picture book.

The speaker (Judith Allee) suggested that you write on one page what they dictate to you. And to not only have a cover, but an "About the Author" page. What a NEAT idea! She would give the created books to Grandparents as gifts. What a great idea!! And what a fun way to see the children and how the grow (with each About the Author page.

• Feb. 23, 2006 - Cleaning and Music Lessons

Posted in Homeschooling
First, I must mention that OreoSouza has added part 2-4 updating her ARE WE SAFE series (I posted a direct link below in Very Important Read). Now back to our regularly scheduled program. LOL!

So I am reading the book Home Grown Kids and in the section for 5-6YR (my oldest just turned 6) it talks about making music.

My children have always been around music. I sang to them in the womb. I sing to them throughout the day. Often, when we are on vacation and I need them to goto sleep in the hotel room I will sing hymns to them. I also play a variety of music for them (classical, hymns, children's worship, Scripture, etc.).

My 4YR and 6YR frequently make up their own songs about anything and everything. I think they got that from their Daddy. He would make up the silliest songs about how much he loved them and about what he was doing (like bath time or getting dressed).

So the book talks about playing a "rhythm" game. Clap, clap, rest. Clap, clap, rest. Can you do what Momma just did?

So while we were cleaning yesterday, I thought I would try it with my oldest (as the other two were running around and not really cleaning). I was in the kitchen cleaning and she was in the living room cleaning.

Me: Hey 6YR. Wanna play a game while we are cleaning?
6YR: (excitedly) YES!
Me: I am going to do something musically and ou are going to try to repeat it. So if I go (with mouth) DO-BE-DO (pause/rest) DO-BE-DO (pause/rest) You would do ???
6YR: DO-BE-DO DO-BE-DO (no pause/rest)
Me: Very close. Listen again. DO-BE-DO (pause/rest) DO-BE-DO (pause/rest)
6YR: DO-BE-DO (pause/rest) DO-BE-DO (pause/rest)
Me: EXCELLENT! Do you wanna try another one?
6YR: OH YES!

This went on and on for quite some time! I tried to "tease" her that I was going to "get" her and think of a rythm she could not get. But she got all of them. Sometimes there was a slight varieance in her reply and I would encourage her to listen closely and try again. She always got it the second time. It was too much fun! And the cleaning was done before we knew it!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the 4YR heard so much giggleing that she came over and tried to play too. Nope - you HAVE to be cleaning to be able to play. So off she went to get some toys to help clean the living room! And she did really well with the game too. Of course she either repeated after sister repeated (if it was a difficult one) OR she got to go first for an easier one.

On a side note, I have also started doing this with simple addition for the 6YR. I also come up with critical thinking questions like "What is big, and brown with green and grows?" They answer "a tree." Does anyone know where I can get some FREE critical thinking questions that are good for 2YR, 4YR and 6YR?? As you can see from the above example, mine are NOT the best. LOL!!

• Feb. 3, 2006 - Week In Review

Posted in Homeschooling
ALL:
  • Tell-A-Story Game (by Ravensburg/Discovery Toys)
  • reading time (they look at a book and read it aloud)
  • chalk driveway zoo - they turned the whole driveway into a zoo! Drew lions and monkeys in cages (we talked about WHY you can't put them in the same cage)

2YR Girl:
"I love your...game" - I would point to her nose and say "I love your nose." Then she would point to my hair and say "I love your hair." It was a fun way to learn about all the body parts she knew, and teach her ones she didn't know.

4YR Girl:
  • Has picked up on sister retelling the story, and has started looking through books and "reading" the story aloud to herself
  • How To Read in 100 Easy Lessons

6YR Girl:
  • Math Cards - created her own math cards! She was FASCINATED that adding was MATH. She is fascinated with space and wants to be an astronaut. Daddy told her she had to learn math to be an astronaut. So the other day when she said that there were 4 girls and two boys in our family (counting her unborn baby brother) and that made six total, I told her that was math. She is now obsesed with math.
  • resturant - took order and drew food I ordered - practicing hospitality
  • reading - she is amazing me at how many words she can read!
  • writing - she loves to look at words and re-write them. I am not sure what good this does, but she is having fun, so she writes and writes and ....

Would love to hear any comments!

• Jan. 30, 2006 - Week In Review

Posted in Homeschooling
I have seen some people doing a week in review for what they did. I find this very encouraging (as I am VERY new to homeschooling). And even though we are not officially homeschooling yet, I thought it would be great for me to start keeping track of what the children are doing, share it with you (in hopes that it might help/encourage you and in hopes that someone might share ways to exand on what we are doing, as we are really leaning towards child-led/relaxed homeschooling). I would LOVE to know the terminology for WHAT they are doing (you know, what teachers use). Is there a web site that lists these terms and what they mean??

ALL:
  • Made edible playdough - work on creativity and imagination
  • Listened to Peter and The Wolf - talked about musical instruments and different feelings they evoked. The 6 and 4 yr olds actually learned what instruments represented what characters.
  • Read Alouds - worked on listening skills
  • Listened to classical music
  • Keeping Home - by doing their chores, they are learning to keep home (Titus2)
  • Singing - replaced word in song with another word. For example, the Itsy Bitsy Spider became the Itsy Bitsy Mommy, The Itsy Bitsy Orange, etc.
  • Momma Time - they all have baby dolls and frequently practice being a mommy
  • Watched March of the Penguins and acted like penguins on their march
2YR GIRL:
  • Alone Read Aloud Time
  • First Words book - I would point out pictures and she would tell me what they were. She really REALLY likes this. She would also point out things she already knew (like shapes I had no idea she knew!).
  • coloring on blank paper
4YR GIRL:
  • Worked on How To Read in 100 Easy Lessons - she is really wanting to learn to read and really likes 100EL
  • Puzzles
6YR GIRL:
  • Alone Read Aloud chapter books - I have a feeling this is how she will learn to read. She does not like 100EL so we don't do that.
  • Drawing - she LOVES to draw pictures that tell stories
  • Word Bag - she likes to take words out of her word bag and make sentances
  • Retells read alouds to Daddy (she does this on her own just to share with Daddy!)
  • learned about baby growing inside mommy - read more

• Jan. 22, 2006 - Oh Baby!

Posted in Homeschooling
Posted in Homeschooling

My sister just sent me some pictures of her first baby (born in December). Oh they are so precious!! She is such a beautiful baby! You can see the love that her and her husband have for this baby of theirs. It makes me so anxious to see this little one growing inside me. To be able to hold him (yes, after three girls, God has seen fit to bless us with a boy), kiss him, snuggle him...

It also makes me look at my growing children with more love and admiration. Time goes SO FAST!! I look at my almost 6 year old (only two weeks away) and remember when she was that small. It brings tears to my eyes to remember those first few days of being a new mom. And now I look at the young lady she is becomming. Such a wonderful helper around the house. And a great teacher to her siblings too. She will make a great wife and mother some day! Glory to God alone for that.

We had some alone time today (she still has an hour quiet time, but after that, while her other siblings are sleeping, she and I have some alone time). I made my belly bare while she rubbed it. She felt the baby move for the first time (the baby has been moving for a while now, but this is the first time SHE felt it). The look of awe and wonder on her face was PRICELESS!! We came downstairs and I searched for web pages that would show her the baby growing inside the amniotic sac (I included a link to the site I liked best at the end of this entry). She was FASCINATED!! She pointed out the veins and we talked about what they were and did.  We talked about amniotic fluid. We talked about placentas and umbilical cords (she kept checking her belly button LOL!). We talked about nutrition. She was so fascinated by it all! And her most concerning question (she was so concerned for me and the baby) was why he kept kicking me. LOL!! I kept showing her how smushed baby brother was inside Mommy and he needs to stretch every now and then.

It was amazing the science lesson I got in with her in such a short amount of time! Who needs curriculum? :D

And even though my other two are still a bit young for all the science behind it, they are not too young to enjoy the baby. They know that baby brother is growing inside Momma. They like to hug and kiss the baby. And soon they too will be able to see and feel baby kicking inside Mommy. :D I wonder what discussions await when that time comes!! :D

Also, check out this WONDERFUL article on welcoming little ones.

Here is the site that I liked with picctures of the baby growing inside Momma http://www.pregnancy.org/pregnancy/fetaldevelopment1.php
