First of all let me say that if you have not read: "Meet the Maiden" then you will not understand why I have put this here. I would love to be a missionary/abolitionist if God wills it. So many countries allow slavery! I want to try to help free those helpless people from chains of bondage and sin. Of course, Jesus can only free from sin, but I can at least spread the His Word! So here is some WOWing info on slavery if you don't know much about it. I appreciate comments!
Slavery. . .
Definition of a Slave: Someone who is the property of another person, someone who has no freedom, and no pay for their labor. They may not even recieve food and lodging.
Traffik: To be taken against your will and sold for sex, (please excuse me, but that's the facts.) cheap labour, or use in the human organ trade.
There are 30 million slaves worldwide, including in America. This is the largest number of slaves in any account throughout world history. The lowest to buy or sell a young slave is in Mali, a landlocked nation in West Africa, and it's $40 (in U.S. money). Can you imagine selling a human being for 40 bucks? A soul is worth so much more, in fact, it's priceless! And the highest for a young slave is $1,000 (in U.S. money), in Thailand. This represents the price paid to the person or parents. This is the lowest that slaves have ever been sold for. The price of a strong male in 1850 America was about $39,000. Slaves now cost 1/38th of what their price 150 years ago was.
As a result, the economics of slavery is stark: the yield of profit per year for those buying and controlling a slave is over 800% on average, as apposed to the 5% per year that would have been the expected payback for buying a slave in colonial times. This combines with the high potential to lose a slave (have them stolen, escape, or freed by unfriendly authorities) to yield what are called disposable people - those who can be exploited intensely for a short time and then discarded, such as the prostitutes thrown out on city streets to die once they contract HIV, or slaves forced to work in mines.
Although outlawed in most countries today, it is secretly practiced in almost ALL countries, with outright enslavement in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. In June-July 2007, 570 people who had been enslaved by brick manufacturers were freed by the Chinese government. Of those rescued, 69 were children. The Chinese government sent 35,000 soldiers to scout for slaves in the brick manufactures and sent many slave owners to prison, even sentencing one to death because he killed his slave. In Mauritania alone, an Islamic republic in Africa, 20% of the population, that's 600,000 men, woman and children, whom are slaves, used mostly for bonded labor. It was criminalized in August 2007. In Niger, slavery is a current phenomenon. 800,000 people are enslaved there. The U.S. found 109,000 children enslaved on the Ivory Coast in 2002. I looked up Ivory Coast, and it's along West Africa.
Human Traffiking is one of the worst slaveries on the face of this planet. Almost 1 million men, women, and children are forced into it as we speak. One mother, father, son, or daughter is taken from homes for exploitation. The Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, and Africa are the worst places for slavery. Also, 93 cities in North America have been reported for slavery.
There are 3 types of slavery:
Wage Slavery: Where someone is enslaved with hard work for little pay,
Contract Slavery: where someone is tricked into signing a conract to be a slave for many years or even life, and
Slavery (in a traditional sence): where someone is forced into slavery. They can either be kidnapped, bought or sold.
PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE BOUGHT OR SOLD! PEOPLE SHOULDN'T OWN PEOPLE!
Isaiah 61:1-3
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the weak, He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn, to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planiting of the Lord, that He might be glorified.
An Abolitionist is someone who seeks to end world slavery.
It's easy to take Liberty for granted if you have never had it taken away from you.
None of us are truly free if others are in slavery.
