Tuesday, September 19, 2006 - Thoughts for today
|
I have been seeing a physical therapist to work on my posture. I have had horrible posture for years and now I really want to work on it so I am not a slumped over old woman. I am thankful for the stretches I have been given to do. They are really helping. Tonight though, I hurt my neck. My husband likes to do something silly every once in a while. It's called tossing. He likes to pick me up and toss me on the bed. Tonight the kitten was on the bed and I was afraid of landing on her so in hopes of trying to avoid her on my land I ended up landing on my head and popping something in my neck. I can feel it stiffen up and it is a bit sore. Thankfully I go to physical therapy tomorrow. With all the progress, I would hate a setback of a hurt neck.
Today was a good day. The kids are doing well in school. They got to play outside for several hours. It was good for them to be in the fresh air. They like to play in the shed. They set up a little table in the shed and had a snack.
I need some kindergarten ideas for a hands on child. She needs variety and I am not good with coming up with original activities. Anything for counting and letter sounds would be great, if anyone has anything to share. This is my one brilliant idea so far. She got to eat the raisins afterwards. But day after day gets a bit boring.

That's a great idea with the raisins- I should do it with Peregrine. One thing he likes is when we're cooking together sometimes I'll write numbers on however many eggs we need, then tell him he can crack egg # 5, then egg # 3, etc. Of course it's best in a recipe with lots of eggs like a fritatta or something.
I'm just about to order some school-type stuff for him. I'm excited!
I need to work on my posture too. I'm always amazed at how perfectly straight my kids sit and stand and wonder when bad posture creeps in.
Hope your neck feels better soon.

You could make the alphabet cookies and she could learn them and count them also. I don't know I am still trying to figure things out for my little ones also.
I did want to stop by and say it looks like I am not going to make it on Saturday. There is just to much going on and with my car dead and all. I would love to get together with everyone another time though it would be fun.
I hope that you or someone will post pictures, then I would feel like I didn't miss out to much.
Thank you and have a wonderful day,
Christina

I will have to think on this. My youngest is almost five and we have been doing hands on kindergarten activities for several years (they keep him busy while his sisters work.) I also did the same with the other two. Off the top of my head we have used all kinds of things for math (adding, subtracting, counting, sorting, patterns, multipying, ven diagrams, dividing, fractions) : bottle caps, legos, small cars, paper clips, rocks, leafs, cookies, cheerios, pizza, cake, pie, pencils, straws, blocks, beads, crackers, egg cartons make great sorters as do lids or cups. We do and have done all of the above types of math using these items. I know there have been more. We play with our food (whtever we are eating) and discuss how many given and taken away. I remember Esther loving to do this with her cheese and crackers. She would take a pile of crackers with cheese, break them and then put them back together, counting the parts and whole (fractions). She would see how many pieces she could make then how many were left when she ate some.
As for letters and reading. We used a lot of letter magnets. We also would learn a letter or color then play scavenger hunt to see where else we could find it. This also works for numbers. Sometimes we did the same game while reading a book or takng a drive.
At this age my kids also liked to play Noggin, Nick Jr. and Sesame Street online. All three have wonderful, age appropriate games that they often played there and then went and did in the real world. I have links to those and many other educational games my children enjoy on our Kid's Portal (which I made a few years ago and have to update becausse the kids are older.) The middle child pictured is Esther and that is where you can find most of the ood for kindergarten age pages. The older kids one is on the left (Rachel) and youner on the right (Issac). We are in the process of making an older kid page for Rachel but this is part of her school work-- she is designing and planning it. Most of the computer activities for younger children can easily be translated into hands on activities, like using scales and sink float.
Hop ethis helps. Email me if you need specific ideas. I have too many to post here. |

Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - Numbers and letters ideas... |
| Posted by Angelheart |
Here are some of my ideas- Counting- I cut a squirrel shape out. Then the kids fed the squirrel cheerios. He can eat peanuts or acorns too. I wrote a 0 on the one squirrel and told him that that squirrel it not allow to eat the cheerios or he gets sick or he at to much already which ever. So silly Brett tries to feed him when I am not looking. LOL. You can make a counting book as a pumpkin. You cut pumpkin shape . Print pumpkin counting book on the front. Practice writing each number then add that many pumpkin seed to the book. (you have to dry the seeds beforehand) You can also roast and eat them. You can make the books with fingerprints too. Adding the stem to each little pumpin. (also can do ladybugs, ants, caterpillers, tons of things) Number exercise . Every morning we do number exercise for each day of the month. 1 toe touch. 2 arm circles or 24 jumping jacks . Depends on the day. A game that works for letter too. Hang numbers or letters around you backyard. Yell out various numbers and the kids run, hop , skip etc. to them. You can also use a big pc. of paper put all the letters or number on and hop to that number or letter in the house. Or make the letter sound and hop to that letter. For letter sounds as we learn them we do an action to each. Mmmm - rub you tummy. etc.. Have a letter of the week. Make crafts, read stories and cook things beginning with that letter. Then you can mention the sound a lot. Writing letters in shaving cream on a backing pan is fun to. You can us kool whip or pudding too. Nice and messy but fun. If you email me a theme you might be working on . I can think of a ton of ideas for you to go with the theme. PreK and K is my specialty. LOL

| Ugh - pain in your neck isn't good. I go to a chiropractor for back pain so I understand. I hope they can take good care of you. I'm not very original when it comes to counting. We do the date on the calendar so the kids learn at least up to 30. We count straws, adding one everyday. We're at 19 right now and we'll keep going until we get to 100. You have way more experience homeschooling than I do... so I'm sure none of this is new. Is this for you 4 year old? Maybe given a few more months she'll be more ready? My boys have been into #s since they were very young, but I really think it's a boy thing...their social skills are what I have to work on!!! :o) |

Wednesday, September 20, 2006 - Thanks for the support!!! |

Thanks for welcoming me. I have much more confidence now, after the comments I recieved. I also am a one for bad posture. Its a good thing I can't look at my shoulders from the side, I would probably have to change my name to Quazie Motto(spelling???). Some times my husband will rub the top of my shoulders and ask how my hump feels. Good luck with the therapy.
