Yesterday as I was printing off activity sheets for school I came across a calendar that told me that tomorrow is Johhny Appleseed's birthday. Now, I don't remember much about Johnny Appleseed and my kids have not yet learned about him either, so I thought it would be fun to explore this man's life/story. After a search on the internet (what a great resource we have), I found some books about him. After school today we were off to the library to find some books about Johnny Appleseed. I found just one at our library so we checked it out. Then off to the orchard to pick apples. We picked a variety. This is the first time for all of us to go to an orchard to pick our apples. The day was beautiful and the apples were ripe. We couldn't wait to take our first bite when we got into the car to drive home.
Next day: We read the story about Johnny Appleseed and then I asked questions to reinforce what they remember. We looked on our big wall maps and located where Johnny was born and where his travels took him. We ate apples during this time, cut out the seeds, counted them, compared a few apple's seeds, and then the girls ran outside to plant their seeds. They are really hoping to grow an apple tree.
Later this week, we hope to get some applesauce made and at least on apple pie or cobbler. I have all these apples now so I must do something with them.
This is my spontaneous lesson plan on Johnny Appleseed. With just a little effort we were able to experience the story in several different ways.
School at home is life. What a great joy it is to provide my children with the opportunity to experience life. The learning just happens.
What fun! Do you know the Johnny Appleseed song? You can read the words and hear the music here: http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/miscellaneous/johnny_appleseed_grace.htm
Another fun thing would be to cut the apples in half (horizontally), dip them in paint, and stamp them on paper.
Sounds like a great lesson plan, and I love what you said about letting them experience life- what better, and funner, way to learn!
Thanks for all the great Q ideas!

There is a DISNEY movie (fancy that!) from a LONG time ago called MELODY TIME that has an animated Johnny Appleseed story (wonderful!!!!) that includes of all things - THE BIBLE! :) I often sing this song to myself. I think you would love it if you can rent it. :) It also has a story of Pecos Bill that is too cute.
A great post...do you have a local orchard that you pick from (in the pict.)? I'm ready to move into the fall crops...lots of fresh apples & pears!
I would love to hear how the HSB Picnic went...did you plan on posting about it? We were all taking turns fighting off the crud last week, so we couldn't make it...so dissapointing! I hope there will be more to come! ;)
