Sunday, October 22, 2006 - Thoughts from the weekend and cute things to share
|
It is Sunday afternoon and I am sitting on the couch relaxing with my foot propped up. It is getting better but it does get tired easily and my other foot is getting tired of holding all the weight. Yesterday was basically lay around all day. I cannot remember the last time I did that. It actually made me more tired and I was stiff from lack of movement.
Hubby is playing doll house with Peanut and it is really cute to listen to the conversation. He is so good with the girls that way, playing with them and interacting with them.
Yesterday afternoon Princess asked me if I wanted her to make lunch for the family. I said yes. So she got out pad and paper and took orders and then she and her sisters got everything ready for us. I was delivered lunch in bed. When I finished I hollered "Can I have another sandwich?" to which I heard the reply, "I just sat down!" I couldn't stop laughing at that. How many times have I said that?
Saturday morning Pixie needed to take a bath. I've been gimpy so hubby has been taking care of things around here. He has me go into the bathroom to see what was going on and I saw that Pixie has brought in her cd player and put in praise music. Then she lit two candles and took a nice relaxing bath. What a hoot!
Now a question for you: At your church, what type of teaching do you have? Does your pastor teach the bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, not skipping even the difficult parts of the bible or does your pastor teach by topic pulling relevant verses out of the bible to teach that topic. Do you like how your pastor teaches? Why or why not? I am just taking a little survey.

Oh Gosh, I love the "But I just sat down" thing. I always serve everyone first and can't stand hearing that phrase just as I sit down to eat.
Glad to hear your feeling a bit better too!
As for the teaching at church, our pastor is more topical in his teaching although hubby is extremely expository when he teaches. Interested to see your survey results.

Have I told you I like your new blog look? I do.
What a wonderful party! This coming weekend my boys are having a Boy Bash party. Boy 1 has made all the plans and invited his friends. Boy 2 invited Grandpa!
My church is not the typical church you see today. We don't have a pastor, anyone can get up and share what they have learned from the Bible. So, some do read verse by verse and others read bits and pieces here and there to make it all fit.

I saw your question about church teaching style and I just had to comment as we just changed churches the beginning of this year.
Our new church has a pastor who basically thinks he is teaching seminary. I would describe his teaching as "Teaching the Word by Topic". For instance, the topics could be "worship", "inerrancy of Scripture", etc.
But the teaching always amounts to digging into the Greek / Hebrew and really getting into the Word.
We love it!
As for your ankle, I'll tell you why my coach always told me: "Walk it off!" |

Does your pastor teach the bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse, not skipping even the difficult parts of the bible or does your pastor teach by topic pulling relevant verses out of the bible to teach that topic.
>>>We don't have a pastor. Not that we're between pastors or anything. We simply don't have one. The belief within the assemblies is that all of the teaching was never meant to be done by one man alone. It was to be shared by those given the gift of teaching by the Holy Spirit and Spirit-led to do so. The messages are brought by - our elders, other men within the assembly, itinerant "preachers" --- though I have never heard that title given them. They may be elders from other assemblies or men who have gone into this work full-time, depending upon the Lord to provide. So it would *seem* there is no consistency, and yet it is truly awesome to watch the Spirit work and how things flow from week to week!
Do you like how your pastor teaches?
>>>Never an issue, as described above! Each man has his own style, but truly I have heard all of them bring messages in many different ways. I do, honestly, have some whose messages I simply prefer to others in general. It's one of the wonderful aspects of "assembly life" - the service is not built around one man's messages. The emphasis is on Christ alone. It keeps things from getting "messy" as they too often can with a pastor.
Why or why not?
>>>See above!
Still need to get back to you about AD/HD! Sorry! We've been pretty busy around here lately.
In Christ alone,
Kari

I am glad you pointed out your question! Here goes:
Since we've moved, we have been attending a local church with which we have both been very pleased. Our pastor is currently going through the book of Joshua, one chapter a week. First, he reads the entire chapter! Praise God just for that! (We've been to some churches where you don't here more than one snippet of God's Word) Then, he goes through and explains what was happening to the characters in the chapter and the lessons they were learning. Finally, he applies it to our lives today, explaining how we too can learn and benefit from this part of scripture, not just think it's a nice story about a couple of battles that God helped them with.
We also visited a home church in the area. They too go through a book, one chapter at a time. However, our very first meeting with them was on a chapter that had a very touchy subject; I was very very nervous at first, and told my dh in whispers, "Do we really want our children to hear this?" but he said we should stick it through. I was pleasantly surprised at a very tactful message. They didn't want to skip the chapter just because it was difficult. It turned out to be a blessing.
Is that kinda what you're looking for?

Oh Susan, that is TOO funny! A great idea too-- I think the boys would LOVE to take orders and make lunch...I'll have to remember that.
Hmmm...I can't even remember the last time I had a bubble bath. Sounds lovely!
At our church, our pastor preaches on different things. Sometimes he has a "theme" for a while (i.e. Proverbs on Wed night for a month, series on faith, etc). But he NEVER skips hard or controversial topics! There is no reason to as the Bible is VERY clear and relevant to ALL of today's situations/topics! Sunday morning sermons always have some part of the Salvation message in it, although it is not always just on plain heaven and hell. Sunday night and Wed's usually deal more with topics such as marriage, growing spiritually, missions, marriage, family, and anything and everything! No matter what, the message is ALWAYS CLEAR.
Hope you continue to heal, my friend!
Love,
Marsha |

Susan,
I just wanted to leave a note about your question regarding church.
As some have talked about before, our family meets with other believers in homes. We go house to house so that hosting a meeting doesn't lie solely on one person. There is open discussion that the whole group can take part in the discussion, not dominated by one man. If we disagree on a subject, we talk about it by going to God's word and explaining our points from scripture. So, there is not the issue of whether or not tough subjects are approached, because we talk about whatever God is leading us to for that particular time.
Church, in this setting, has enabled me to mature as a believer more than other situation has, probably because there is intimate fellowship with each other and with God. It has also pushed me to search the scriptures for myself.
Just curious......what motivated you to do this survey? |

Our pastor does both sometimes, but for the most part he sticks to topic and draws scripture based on that. But he draws from whole chapters or books too. For example - last week he did "Running from God" and talked about Jonah and how he ran from God. This week he talked about "The Truth in Turning to God" and again spoke from Jonah -- with an occasional scripture from somewhere else if it's relevant.
I like the three things to be thankful for. Today I read a devotional about being thankful for our hands and not taking them for granted. So today I'm thankful for my hands; a warm, secure home on such a cold, windy day; and for my husband working from home.
Have a great day!

Our pastor is expository but he will preach on a topic occasionally. We are currently going through the gospel of John and I looked back in my notes and we have been there since at least the end of 2003 (our pastor was sick and out of the pulpit for about 9 months recently though). I grew up under mostly topical preaching and I would say I have learned way more under the expository. I enjoy hearing the meaning of the different words in Hebrew/Greek/Latin because that helps to understand their use in the context.

We definitely have a verse by verse Pastor. Our church is very liturgical which is nice for the girls because they love to learn the parts to say every week. It is family oriented which means we have no Sunday School and the girls worship with us as a family. We read one chapter of the Old Testament (This week was in Leviticus where in which there was a lot of discussion of uncovering nakedness and animals), One chapter from an Epistle, a Gospel passage and then then sermon text. Our pastor, Dr. Peter Leithart is a theologian "par excel'ance". He has taken us through 1st and 2nd Kings for the last 2 or so years. He had just recently finished writing his commentary on Kings which made for easy Sunday adaptation. Having one of "those" pastors that teach through the entire bible is a wondrous blessing (hard verses and all). I have gained such a richness and deeper understanding of "new testament truth" by being guided with wisdom through the Old Testament.
In "A House for My Name" My pastor makes the comment " A man kisses a sleeping woman in a wood and she awakes. That's a nice ending to a story, but if we dont know the woman is Sleeping Beauty and the man is Prince Phillip, then we don't know the story well. A beginning is nothing without an ending, but an ending without a beginning is not worth much either. To tell the story of Jesus we must start in Genesis."
God made the Bible, names and all. God thought seedy stories, genealogies and explicit sexual content mixed with gore and violence was proper for teaching us to be holy as He is holy. I mean, God topped it off by saying that "All Scripture is profitable....." and it's for kids too.......That doesn't mean that it is all "equally" profitable, but it is profitable. It takes great men of understanding to draw out wisdom from the OT. God could have written His holy word without genealogies and the like, but He opted to include those things for His glory and our benefit.
The bible is the foundation for all of living. If we cut and paste the bible we are not honoring God's holy writ. Who are we to edit out graphic scenes or not read the Song of Solomon to our kids because we feel that its inappropriate for our kids....the bible inappropriate?? It was made for kids. They were there at the giving of the law-they saw the plagues- they saw what happened when God was thought a trifle. The bible is there to teach and admonish all ages.
I hope I was not too dogmatic about the topic. I have just learned so much from men who have not been willing to compromise by avoiding the hard portions of the bible. It is difficult, but well worth it. After all ALL of the new testament writers saw GRACE and more GRACE in the Old Testament. They called it the "perfect law of liberty." We must not look at the Old Testament through the eyes of most modern day Evangelicals and see only a legalistic, sour, dour, prune juice, God. We need to see that the Old Testament is all about grace even in the law. It sets us free. The NT writers read the OT in light of Christ and His sacrifice for us, they didn't discard the OT....And THAT.....is my long winded opinion of the matter. I hope I answered your question and didn't offend.
Blessings,
Matt
PS this is the first Blog I've read or commented on in about 2 months. I have been working on my wife's-soon to be completed-bathroom. Hope this finds you well. Also if you have not read "A House for My Name" it is a great book and "fairly" easy to read. It is available at www.canonpress.org |
