I am trying to decide if I need to start using a spelling program. I keep thinking that copy work will be enough to improve those skills but when my daughter comes up and asks if I can teach her to spell, I think maybe I need to do something more. I have never been fond of the spelling list and writing them out day after day, but then maybe that is the best way. I don't know. I am looking for your input. What do you use? What do you like about it? What don't you like about it?
Thanks so much! You all have always been so helpful. Susan

We have not really used a formal spelling program yet. Sonlight did have it in the core we covered last year but Dash already knew all of those words.
I will have the boys go up to the whiteboard and write words that I call out to them. With my just turned 5yo, I'll start off easy with words like cat, bat, sat, sad, fad, mad, mud, dud, sud-- pretty much keeping word groups like the sequential approach.
Tank is currently working through Spelling Power Book A. I'm thinking about trying Sequential Spelling this summer. For now, we just have fun with it and take note of any words that they have problems with.
I think that if your kids read a lot, then spelling becomes easier and easier for them, as does vocabulary. I've always been an avid reader and spelling has always just "made sense" to me.
Have a great week!
Love,
Marsha |

I have an unschooling approach to spelling. We did do some spelling list work a few years back, but they got 100% (no joke) every single test, so I just laughed and said, Oh well. My 9yo daughter is not a 'naturally' good speller, but since she reads like a fiend her spelling has grown beautifully with her.
I'm sorry I'm no help. I do know that Spelling power was annoying, so it didn't last. I like doing recitation in the car, but that's just good homeschooling, not a curriculum.
you'll figure something good out. You always have super good ideas, which is why I like reading your blog! :) |

we have been using the modern curriculum press spelling workout books since first grade. the words are usually very easy for them but the workbook practice is pretty good for them, i think. plus the books are cheap.
hey, you should buy up a lot of those bonnets at that craft fair you have in your state and put them on homeschoolbuy.com. i would buy them! |

i use My Father's World which has spelling in it so I don't know if it will help you or not since it's a complete curriculum. I remember seeing one I really liked. It's called AVKO. Try this link

I have always used a similar approach to spelling. I was able to get a good deal on Spelling Power recently and I am really enjoying it...as is my son. The great thing about it is that he is only studying the words he DOESN'T know how to spell and then moving on. My question has always been, why study a list of twenty words that he already knows how to spell simply because that is the list for the week? Seems pointless. Another great thing about SP is that you only need one book for all your kids from grade school through high school.
That's my two cents...for whatever it's worth!

Hi Susan,
We dont use anything for spelling. What I do is chose a few words for a list. When we are reading or writing if I see my child has spelled something wrong. I will write it on a card and put it in an index card box. Then the following week. I take out the cards and this is her list for the week. We practice them and she writes them .When she has them right 4 times out of the week we take them out of the box. Then on Friday we have a spelling test. For the next week what ever is gathered from the previous week is added to the box plus any words spelled incorrectly from the last test. I dont know if this helps you or not. this is just what we do. I I ever have a week where she is spelling everything well then I probably will chose some from the dictionary. |

This is hard to answer. Every child is so different. But both my worst and best spellers improve every year, as their reading improves. I had to point that out to dd when she was getting frustrated. I told her, "last year you tried to spell this word like this, but this year you are getting it correctly!"
I have used and liked Alphabet Island Phonics
I have used and liked ACSI Spelling for older children. Do NOT buy the teacher's guides!!! Just the workbooks. They are very good. VERY.
This year I went back to using LLATL and just correcting things as I saw fit; but I'm thinking I should have stuck with the ACSI books. Sequential spelling sounds good too.
