I'm a homeschool mom of 3 daughters. My aim in life is to glorify God by loving and serving my family, grow personally in my walk with Him, and being a Titus 2 woman to those younger than me. This blog is to share what God is doing in my life and in the life of our homeschool.
Princess is 9 years old . She was born a princess and continues to hold the title. She loves all things girlie and is talented in all things crafty.
Pixie is 7 and a half. She has a passion for truth, loves rocks and shells and has a huge collection of them.
Peanut is 5. She is fun loving, happy all the time and can make anybody laugh.
1. I am thankful for the note I found this morning from Princess. She told me that she was sorry for dishonoring me yesterday when she complained about our Thanksgiving unit. She said she knows she was wrong and that she did like our project and she will try harder to be more respectful. (A sign of reaching her heart and it is a huge blessing).
2. I am thankful for the being able to control an angry outburst this morning. I was getting frustrated because it was getting late in the morning and we hadn't started school yet. I felt the heat rising. I said they are getting right to work and we were not going to have our table time together. Then I am not sure what happened. I just calmed down and had them sit and said we are doing our table time. When they asked why, since I just said it was cancelled, I said I really wanted to. We sat down and prayed and I thanked God for self control. I have been praying for a change in this area, not just in behavior but from the inside out. So you can imagine what a blessing it was to have all this steam slowly escape with no damage in my relationship with my kiddos. I found a great website on thanksgiving and my computer taught the lesson this morning. We were blessed.
3. My friend and mentor who visits me on Thursdays brought me a big vanilla latte. That was truly a wonderful afternoon treat. Oh, and I made pumpkin cheesecake bars. They were yummy.
Here is the recipe:
Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars
16 oz package pound cake mix 3 eggs, divided 2T butter melted 4t pumpkin pie spice, divided 8 oz pkg cream cheese 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk 16 oz can pumpkin 1/2 t salt
In a large bowl, combine cake mix, one egg, butter, and 2 t pumpkin pie spice until crumbly. Press into bottom of jelly roll pan. In large bowl, mix cream cheese until fluffy. Beat in sweetened condensed milk, pumpkin, salt, remaining eggs, and pumpkin pie spice. Mix well. Pour over crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Cool and refrigerate before serving.
I've been reading your book reviews and I wanted to say thank you for posting them. I also wanted to answer your question as to why I would make my own science lesson plans (curriculum) for my children when there are so many products out there.
There are many wonderful products out there but here's the reasons why I don't want to use them for our early years (first and second grade).
1. The amount of information packed in is just too much. I don't see the need to talk "over" my children's level at this stage. I want them to understand, not listen to me say words that we need to look up every 2 seconds for them to understand. I want my child's discovery level to be exciting and interesting not confusing.
2. The cost of the prepackaged curriculums is overwhelming in some cases. Especially once you add on the cost of materials for experiments, books etc. I made a list of the curriculums I thought I would like to use and then wrote down the cost of using them. I didn't like what I saw.
3. WTM has suggestions for science for the grammar years (first-fourth) and I want to implement them. Since other homeschoolers have successfully done this, I've just taken it a step further and writing lessons about what we're doing and sharing it with others. WTM does suggest curriculum for some of the years, btw.
4. From what I saw of the other curriculums, I'd be modifying them anyway. Why do that? Why pay for something that you're going to change, doesn't that defeat the purpose of paying for it?
Okay, here's a post within your comments- sorry.
Blessings to you
