Monday, November 20, 2006 - So what do you get?

Do you have someone in your family who us impossible to buy a gift for?  Well, I have 7. Yep.  My mom, stepdad, sister, mil, fil, bil, and sil.  I lucked out so far, my sister told me exactly what she wanted and I went and bought it right away before she could change her mind. I don't usually get off so easy with her.  The parents and grandparents happen to have plenty of resources to get whatever they want or need anytime.  Three of them do not have any hobbies whatsoever, and one especially despises clutter or anything that takes up room.  I've got one allergic to wool, can't wear earrings, only wears white shirts and a couple who don't like anything cheap.  Seriously, it is a problem.  If they give me ideas it is ok, but I don't always get ideas.  I have made my husband responsible for his dad, and what we end up doing is buying a bunch of useless stuff he doesn't know what it is or does.  That way when it gets tossed we don't feel as bad.  We have in the past thought we had a great idea, only to find out it wasn't so great after all.  I am a gift giver. It is my love language, so this is a real dilema for me.  I love to buy gifts for people.  I tend to go to way too much effort to find the right thing.  I love to buy something for a needy family or child.  It is so much more joyful to give to someone in need.

I am not looking for any ideas, I am ranting.  I know you all will have wonderful ideas, but I guarantee that they won't work for one reason or another.

Phew, got that out of my system.
Susan

I have the same problem, only on a smaller scale. My in-laws are impossible to buy for! They don't have hobbies, they don't read much, don't cook - what woman wouldn't like a new cookbook, or fun cooking-related item?? - don't like to eat... we have been reduced to bath products and golf balls in the past. Or cds - at least if they don't like them, they can give them away and they're small too! So I can empathize with you on this one! Hope you get some good ideas.

What??? You don't want ideas? My mind was racing with all the things we've gotten for people that have been hard to buy for... I'm going to share my favorite anyway :) My mom is from the state of Maine. I didn't want to clutter her house either so I got her a small, table-top tree that was from Maine. They live in California now. It decorated their house for Christmas and made it smell nice, then it died, and they threw it away.

How about a nice set of quilted cards? :o) Okay, okay, I'll stop now.

You don't believe me? Ok, I will respond to both the ideas from Linda. My mil hates big christmas trees because they take up too much room, so she always gets a small one that stands on the table. About the cards, my inlaws own a card company where they make pressed flower cards and book marks and stationary.

Ok, so now I am going to have to have you all leave comments and see if anyone can come up with something original that just might work for them.

Good Luck!
Susan

Okay, so maybe my ideas were perfectly wrong! :o)

How about the practical route - who couldn't use a gopher-reacher. You can see it here: http://www.aidsforarthritis.com/catalog/gopher-reacher.html . I've given one to my MIL AND my dad who are both hard to buy for and it's been a hit. Really - how about that? :o)

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - My mom's cool idea

Gift card exchange. She puts four or five cards of different denominations to different stores (Borders, Starbucks, Target, Jamba Juice, In and Out Burger, Best Buy, etc.) in each envelope, then passes a box with the envelopes around. Everyone pulls an envelope out of the box and gets what they get.

But then the fun begins... bargaining! Begging! Stealing! OK, not really stealing, but last year I gladly gave my Starbucks cards away for Borders and Target. My Starbucks-addicted sil traded everything she had for Starbucks. The teenagers wanted the Best Buy cards and most of the adults were happy to oblige.

The amounts can be as much as $50 (just a few of those) and as small as $5, which buys a little girl five kid's cocoas at Starbucks. Not bad!

Do they drink coffee? I hear Viridian Coffee Roasters makes a pretty good cup! You can even do a subscription so they can get a pound a month for a couple months. The gift that keeps on giving.

How about letting your kids make a gift? Sometimes I think grandparents (and other relatives) enjoy stuff more if they know a small, beloved, family member made it for them. Check out familyfun.com. They have some cute, homemade gift ideas. Are any of your girls artistic? You could have them draw a picture and then reproduce it as gift notes (8 or 16 to a set) as a gift. Another idea was the Holiday Legends Scrapbook on this website http://jas.familyfun.go.com/guestsubmit?action=displayguest&topic_id=11&guest_id=2507&category_id=
Another was Stories of the Year http://jas.familyfun.go.com/guestsubmit?action=displayguest&topic_id=11&guest_id=2517&category_id=
and the other one I liked was the Family Recipe and Photo Album http://jas.familyfun.go.com/guestsubmit?action=displayguest&topic_id=11&guest_id=2748&category_id=
Just ideas in case you want to check them out.
