Monday, February 20, 2006 - It is finished!
|
Here is the skirt I just finished. It isn't perfect. But it is wearable and I will get a lot of use out of it this summer. It is a very light weight cotton. I learned some things about sewing so that is a good thing. I will need some practice with zippers. I will also adjust the length before cutting the fabric as I found doing it at the end was much more difficult. I also wasn't sure what size I wore and so after measuring myself I picked what I thought would work and now I know that it was too big. I had to make adjustments as I went along and so I wouldn't want anyone looking at the inside of the skirt. Now I know that I can do it and I really enjoyed it. So here begins my journey with yet another craft! I guess that will just prepare me for working through the Keepers handbook with my girls. (See post below)

Tonight I was icing my SIL's DH birthday cake and was thinking of you. You decorate cakes, knit and/or crochette, make jewelry and now sew, what don't you do? You even come up with your own Spirital tag, WOW! You are one VERY talented hs mom. One top of all that you're SKINNY! The Lord blessed you with some wonderful (and not easy) talents. Thank you for sharing them with us....although I am GREEN with envy-LOL!
God Bless,

| You did a good job, I love to sew and make most of my own clothes. Isn't it a great feeling to wear something you made with your own hands! |

| Great work! But let's face it - you'd look good in a burlap sack. |

You did great on that! And I second the comment on burlap sacks...
Here's my question: one of the reasons we haven't pushed really hard to sew our own clothes is the fact that the main clothes users around here (the kids) can get clothes cheaper than we can make them.
Frequently, that happens at the thrift store, but even with some specials at Target and the like, it seems cheaper to buy than make.
All that being said, when you take your time out of it (how long did it take, anyway?), what was the cost of making that skirt? (I'm such a guy - "Nice skirt! How much did it cost for you to make?") |

Color me impressed!
I was so inspired by our conversation that I let my 8 yod choose a fabric and dress pattern at Wal-Mart (I have a love/hate relationship with that bloomin' store) yesterday. This afternoon I cut out and sewed both girls a sun dress for under $15 with patterns included in about 3 hours!
I'll post the pics on my blog tomorrow.
Melanie
Thanks for reminding me how much fun it is to sew and see the rewards of your labor. |

Your skirt is beautiful! You are just cruising right along with your newest talent! Didn't your daughters just start learning last week and they are making all this stuff and you have a skirt made??? Wow! I'm impressed. Isn't it frustrating when the size gets messed up and you have to redo things? I had this wacky idea this past year to make matching shirts/dresses for our family vacation. Now I'm a novice sewer in every sense of the word, so I had to be out of my mind. And once I suggested it, the children wouldn't let me off the hook -- or I would NOT have done it. I learned soooooo much from my mistakes. Some of the other things I learned is that putting sleeves on is a pain in the rear. The points never match up as they are supposed to. Zippers are also a pain. Sizing is an even bigger pain. Everyone else's stuff came out fine, but my dress was just not right. I ended up having to wear a tank top under my dress and just didn't feel like it was flattering. Then again I was pregnant and trying to account for that by not making the top as big as the midsection needed to be. I just don't think it was a great pattern to begin with (the brand, not the style). Anyhow, keep at it! I'll e-mail you regarding the baby when I get a chance. I've been so busy.

I really like the fabric! Good job! :o) I enjoy sewing too...just haven't made the time to do much lately with it. I have three girls and it seems that every time I start to sew, they all beg me to sew them something. Needless to say...that'd be a lot of sewing with all the things they want. :o)

| I am very encouraged by your sewing skills. This spring I'm going to begin classes with an older friend of mine so I can put my expensive machine to use. And the girls' bags are absolutely adorable. |
