Sunday, January 15, 2006 - Equipping believers
|
Equipping believers----- What does this actually mean? How do we equip believers to follow Christ and to reach out to others? What does this look like individually and corporately? Does this mean lots of programs? And what should programs accomplish? Does it mean small groups? Does it mean individual discipling relationships?
I know there are a wide variety of answers to these questions and it can look different in lots of situations. Will you readers please help me out here. I'd just love to compile a bunch of different ways we can help equip each other. I've thought about this a lot and have had many discussions with my hubby so I definately have some views on this but I'd love to see where other people are at. Are they doing this well, or do they feel like they haven't done such a good job in this area and would like to improve.
Thanks, I can't wait to see what we come up with. Susan

Tuesday, December 13, 2005 - I'm Starving
|
How many of you are being fed real food- not skim milk, 2% milk or even whole milk but real honest to goodness, good for you protein filled steak?
Can I have some too?
I'm really hungry. Will you share?
Somebody?
Anybody?
"But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgement."
Hebrews 5:14, 6:1

Is it OK/right for churches to charge their members to use the church facility for ministry/prayer/study activites during non church (Sunday) hours? |

Thursday, November 10, 2005 - Help, I'm being prunned
|
Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. John 15:2
I am in a season in life where I can say God is working, I am growing, and I can see fruit. But God says He wants me to bear more fruit. I've had a few situations arise where I have become discouraged. I am discouraged with people and I'm trying to figure out how to handle it. I can overlook the situation and move on. But is that what I am supposed to do? I can forgive and move on. Is that all I'm supposed to do? I can confront the issues head on, seek some sort of restitution, forgive, and then move on. Sometimes I'd like to pretend it's not there. But God didn't bring this up in order for me to not deal with it. He wants me to deal with it because in so doing I can demonstrate more fruit. Jesus says that I can't bear fruit without Him. So I must study Him, love Him, worship Him, and relate to Him so that He can give me the power to bear the fruit He desires. And there is a good reason to bear fruit. He wants me to glorify the Father.
I am the vine you are the branches. HE who abides in Me, and I in him bears much fruit; for without me you can do nothing. John 15:5
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be my disciples. John 15:8
I'm not sure what God is telling me to do yet. But I do know this, whatever I do, it must be done with humility, love, compassion, and grace. Maybe this is exactly the fruit He wants me to bear.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverence godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness love. For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 1:5-8

Tuesday, October 11, 2005 - Women speaking in church
|
I've been speaking on a yahoo group called Patriarch's Wives and the question came up about women speaking in church ( 1Cor 14:34-35). Some women believed that they should not speak in sunday school class or bible studies in homes where the company is mixed.
I did some research and came up with this:
The previous verses talk about the types of teaching that may occur ( tongues, prophecy, revelation, psalm, interpretation) and the best way for it to be done. My commentary in my bible (NKJ) states that Paul allowed women to participate in worship and speak in the assembly (1Cor11:5) but here he may have been forbidding them from giving spoken criticisms of the prophecies that were made because he was concerned that the principle of headship be evidenced in the public assembly of believers.
34-35: Women shouldn't be judging prophecy or disrupting meetings.
a. Paul has already assumed the right of women to pray or prophecy publicly (11:1-16); here he is probably emphasizing the right of women to judge prophecy, something restricted to the male leadership of the church.
b. as well, women shouldn't be disrupting meetings with questions or chatter.
Chuck Smith commentary:
34-35 The men and women were separated and seated on either side of the assembly during services. The women were calling to their husbands to ask questions during the service so Paul asked the women to wait until they were home to discuss the message.
It is anyones choice to not speak at a bible study in someone's home but I don't think the bible is saying that we can't do this. I think taken in context that this verse is speaking to women challenging what the men are teaching in public through whatever means they are teaching (v26). I would not do this but would go home and ask my husband about the teaching. However I will make a comment in sunday school or bible study on what God has shown me through the passage that we are studying. This is not challenging my husbands authority or anyone elses. It also says in verse 35 ...for it is shameful for women to speak in church. I think this further supports my view on speaking in bible studies or sunday schools. I believe this to be a worship service in the sanctuary with the pastor doing the teaching.
I would love to hear comments or any other information that someone has studied.
Susan
PS_ my husband has read this and has approved it. Even though I am speaking to women I wanted to make sure he knew what I was saying. |

Tuesday, October 4, 2005 - Sunday School
|
It has come to my attention that our church sunday school program will be implementing videos to go with the bible lesson. The explanation used as to why they have chosen to do this is that our children are in the media age and learn better when they are able to watch something on tv- rather than listen to an adult teach the class. And if that is the way they learn and it is the job of the church to reach them then they will use this mode of educating them. I can see this sort of thing starting in the PS- but when it starts in church I have to ask myself, "what on earth is going on?"
I feel like they are giving the kids candy and then wondering why they won't take the carrots. What ever happened to training? Train the kids to listen, to behave, to keep quiet, to participate. Have an expectation that they will succeed and they will. But keep giving them candy and they will keep wanting candy.
Surely I am not the only one who sees that this is just plain wrong. I'm not saying tv is wrong. We watch some tv. But I am saying that to have my kids plugged in at church is not the best way to teach them.
I realize that we will need to decide if our children are getting the best in sunday school and if not then pull them out. I would love to hear some thoughts on this.
