I'm a homeschool mom of 3 daughters. My aim in life is to glorify God by loving and serving my family, grow personally in my walk with Him, and being a Titus 2 woman to those younger than me. This blog is to share what God is doing in my life and in the life of our homeschool.

Princess is 9 years old . She was born a princess and continues to hold the title. She loves all things girlie and is talented in all things crafty.

Pixie is 7 and a half. She has a passion for truth, loves rocks and shells and has a huge collection of them.

Peanut is 5. She is fun loving, happy all the time and can make anybody laugh.

Thursday, December 14, 2006 - A Special Treat!

Last night my friend gave me a loaf of her families favorite Cardamom Bread.  She makes it every year at Christmas, and I have had the opportunity to have a little through out the years.  This time I got my own loaf. Wow, is that stuff good.  She put it in a little red loaf pan and tied a ribbon around it. The presentation was so cute that I should have taken a picture of it for this post. But it is too late, because I ate it. All!  My favorite way to eat it is toasted with butter, accompanied by a cup of tea.  Have you ever had Cardamom bread?  Anyone have a good recipe?  I am not much a bread maker, but I might try this, if I had the recipe.

Wednesday, December 13, 2006 - Busy Week

Boy this week has been busy.  I clued you in on Monday. Tuesday we went to a friends house and stayed far longer than anticipated.  She is a card maker and she helped me make cards for something I can't share in case someone reads my blog.  It was a fun afternoon.

Then last night, my friend watched our kids so hubby and I could spend some time together. We shopped for the last of the Christmas presents for family, had dinner and coffee. It was nice to spend time together. It has been a while and hubby has been working long hours and has been very stressed out.  If you think about it will you pray for him. We may be starting to look for new work for him, as the situation isn't likely to change.

Today Princess got her braces on.  Wow, that was a long appointment. I had the two other girls with me and I forgot to bring the bag with busy work and books for them.  Princess was a bit anxious and stressed but she did very well and I was very proud of her. She is taking her responsibility of caring for her braces seriously too.

Tomorrow we don't have any plans, but I may need to go to the bead store for some extra supplies for some earrings I may be selling.  But hopefully we can spend the majority of the day home.

Needless to say, we haven't done any school this week. I had planned on it. Really.  It just hasn't worked out. Oh well. Maybe we can get a few days in next week before we leave for CA.  Or maybe not.

I found a church to go to while in CA for the Christmas Eve service. I am excited, as we never go to church when we visit my family.

Have a good Thursday.  Hug your kids, do a craft, bake something. Just enjoy each other.  I plan on doing the same thing.

Monday, December 11, 2006 - Blah blah blah

Well, I cannot say I am happy about the new format change.  At least not yet.  It takes a while to get used to change. Good grief, I finally felt like I got used to the old format.  Now I can't find anything.  I am sure the shock will wear off soon.  For those who have no idea what I am talking about, Sunday, HSB was down for some system maintenance and now every thing has moved.  Everything as in how to add a new entry and see my profile etc.

I offended someone tonight and I feel really bad about that. I was taken aback by the reaction to something I said. It was a bit strange as I had never had someone react that way before.  Not that she was wrong, it was just a bit more forward than I am used to.  I felt bad too because there was a belief on her part that I felt negatively about something and I didn't. So somehow I gave her that impression and that bothers me.  Anyways, we are good, as I didn't let the night go without making sure were patched things up. It was just a weird confrontation and has made me a bit unsettled.

We had our Christmas party with our friends today. We did a couple of crafts and decorated sugar cookies.  It was very fun. It is always fun!  But busy and I am pooped.  But not tired.

I am nearly done with Christmas shopping and I am so glad.  I don't think I need to go to the mall again.  I actually only went once.  I did most of my shopping online.  Speaking of Christmas shopping, if you need a gift of jewelry don't forget to look at my Christmas shop.

Well, good night. Maybe tomorrow I will have something more interesting to say.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006 - Isolation

I think I may have a problem. I am starting to think I have more contact with my blog friends than I do with my friends in real life.  I am getting the feeling that I am getting left behind.  I don't know why.  Well, I kinda do, but I won't talk about that.   Tis a pretty sad thing really. I spend a lot of time doing school during the day.  The kids only have one outside the home actvity on Wednesday evenings. I may talk to a friend about once a week on the phone. It used to be a lot more.  I find myself holed up in my house except to run errands once or twice a week.  The rest of my free time is on the computer.  Really, my life is getting pathetic.  I think I am starting to understand what another blogging friend told me once.  I have several friends who read my blog, so they likely feel like they know what is going on in my life.  So there is no need to call me to catch up. They are caught up.  I however, have no clue what goes on in their life. Is this unhealthy?

Monday, November 20, 2006 - So what do you get?

Do you have someone in your family who us impossible to buy a gift for?  Well, I have 7. Yep.  My mom, stepdad, sister, mil, fil, bil, and sil.  I lucked out so far, my sister told me exactly what she wanted and I went and bought it right away before she could change her mind. I don't usually get off so easy with her.  The parents and grandparents happen to have plenty of resources to get whatever they want or need anytime.  Three of them do not have any hobbies whatsoever, and one especially despises clutter or anything that takes up room.  I've got one allergic to wool, can't wear earrings, only wears white shirts and a couple who don't like anything cheap.  Seriously, it is a problem.  If they give me ideas it is ok, but I don't always get ideas.  I have made my husband responsible for his dad, and what we end up doing is buying a bunch of useless stuff he doesn't know what it is or does.  That way when it gets tossed we don't feel as bad.  We have in the past thought we had a great idea, only to find out it wasn't so great after all.  I am a gift giver. It is my love language, so this is a real dilema for me.  I love to buy gifts for people.  I tend to go to way too much effort to find the right thing.  I love to buy something for a needy family or child.  It is so much more joyful to give to someone in need.

I am not looking for any ideas, I am ranting.  I know you all will have wonderful ideas, but I guarantee that they won't work for one reason or another.

Phew, got that out of my system.

Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - Toys, Toys, Toys

Why have toys gone downhill over the years?  What ever happened to the classic toys?  You know, the toys that don't make any sounds.  Why do all the toys make sounds?  Do the manufacturers really think that a child will not know how to moo like a cow, if the farm toy didn't moo for him?  Is it to take the load off the parent to actually teach the child how to moo?  Why do little girl dolls have to look like they are 25 years old?  Can't a little girl play with a doll that actually looks like a little girl?  Do manufacturers think that little girls need to learn how to look like an adult and the parent isn't able to teach the child?

So, that brings me to the question. What am I going to get my three girls for Christmas?  My 5yo is especially difficult as we have so much already and yet she still loves toys.  Finding something appropriate is difficult.  I was going to add to a Fisher Price set she has, but it seems like they are no longer being made, since I cannot find them anywhere.  It looks like all the good toys are being replaced with garbage.

If anyone has any brilliant ideas, I am all ears!!!

Monday, October 23, 2006 - Thankful

My friend literarygirl is writing everyday three things she is thankful for. I thought I would do the same and hope to not forget a day. So here goes:

1.  Free lapbook downloads from Live and Learn Press.
2.  Tea and my insta-hot to speed the process of making a cup every night.
3.  Our cat tree that keeps the cats from destroying our furniture.

That wasn't so hard.  We will just assume that I am thankful for my family, health, God etc.  This is to help me realize that I am thankful for the everyday mundane things.

If you haven't seen the post below, please look. I asked a question that I would love to get more answers to. Leave you answer in that post.

Thanks,
Susan

Friday, October 20, 2006 - That blasted ankle

Yep- I did it.  I fell last night walking down my friends steps and sprained my ankle. It throbbed and swelled and now is achey and stiff.  I guess I will be a hobbling along for a few days.  Ugh! I also skinned my knee. But I did not put a hole in my favorite jeans.  Thank goodness for that! LOL

Monday, October 9, 2006 - Monday

I always wait until I catch up on my blog reading before I write in my own blog.  Then it is late and I should really go to bed. But it seems that late is when the words start to flow. I have always been this way.  I can't focus on anything important before 10:00 am.  In college I gave up taking early morning classes.  I scheduled them no earlier than 9:00 am but usually 10:00am. That guaranteed I would actually show up!  It seems like Pixie is just like me. She has shown signs of being a night owl since she was a baby.  At 7 1/2 I can say that she definately is a night owl.  I think we are all born with an internal clock and while circumstances can dictate it to some degree, we tend to do better when we function on our own clock.

Ok, so that was not why I was writing.  Tomorrow is my HOPE meeting. I have shared about that before. It is my mom's homeschool group. HOPE stands for "homeschoolers offering prayer and encouragement".  I love this group. I love all the women in it. God has brought togehter a unique group of women with different backgrounds and who come from different churches.  I am so blessed by these women and the courage, gifts, and wisdom they bring.  Even better, I love the children. I love when we get together with the kids because they are all so delightful.  It really is a group of comfort.  HOPE is going to be at my house for the first time tomorrow.  So, I am sure tomorrow after school is done we will be cleaning and preparing for the meeting. I am looking forward to it, to sharing my home.  I haven't always felt that way, but I know God wants me to be hospitable and so I am choosing to overcome my own issues with it. Our topic for the evening will be how we teach/train our children the words of the bible. Do we do devotions, bible studies, verse memory, bible curriculum, Awana, or something else?  So tell me, what do you do?  I'd love to share some good ideas/products from you.

I will try to make a list of what we do and share them tomorrow night. (if they give me permission).

Monday, October 2, 2006 - New Look

A BIG THANK YOU to Ali for giving my blog an update.  She is so patient and I believe she likes doing this so if you want a new look and don't want to deal with html/CSS, or simply can't because of your brains inability to learn this stuff, she is the one to ask.  Don't worry, while some may think I am a proficient computer gal, this stuff is still above my head.  I love the new look. What do you all think?

Tuesday, September 19, 2006 - Thoughts for today

I have been seeing a physical therapist to work on my posture. I have had horrible posture for years and now I really want to work on it so I am not a slumped over old woman.  I am thankful for the stretches I have been given to do.  They are really helping.  Tonight though, I hurt my neck.  My husband likes to do something silly every once in a while. It's called tossing. He likes to pick me up and toss me on the bed.  Tonight the kitten was on the bed and I was afraid of landing on her so in hopes of trying to avoid her on my land I ended up landing on my head and popping something in my neck.  I can feel it stiffen up and it is a bit sore.  Thankfully I go to physical therapy tomorrow. With all the progress, I would hate a setback of a hurt neck.

Today was a good day. The kids are doing well in school.  They got to play outside for several hours. It was good for them to be in the fresh air. They like to play in the shed. They set up a little table in the shed and had a snack.

I need some kindergarten ideas for a hands on child.  She needs variety and I am not good with coming up with original activities.  Anything for counting and letter sounds would be great, if anyone has anything to share.  This is my one brilliant idea so far.  She got to eat the raisins afterwards.  But day after day gets a bit boring.

Friday, August 18, 2006 - Tag

Here is a fun tag from Heather.

If you could write a novel about any subject, what would it be? (Just the subject–don’t give away your plot idea!)

It seems like I have always worked with kids in some capacity.  Before mine were born I came up with a secret desire.  It won't be secret now!  I decided that I would love to write a children's book.  I had experience as a nanny and I thought it would be fun to write a series of picture books about a family with lots of children and their  nanny.  Now as a mom and a homeschooler my perspective has changed quite a bit.  I'd still like to write a children's book but not about nannies.  My guess is that it would be about a homeschool family with lots of children and the adventures they go on and things they learn and the unconventional way they learn them.  I agree with Heather in how she answered her tag in that there are not as many good junior level books for girls.  It would be great to write a book for that age group but since I am not a gifted writer I will stick with the picture book idea.  So, now the secret is out and I guess you can conclude that my secret is a big part of why I started a blog; to practice my writing skills.

That was fun and if you want to answer the question please do but leave a comment so I can go read it.

Thursday, August 3, 2006 - A little of nothing

It's here! What you ask?  My This Old Schoolhouse magazine. I got it today and I have already started reading it and I tell you it is jam packed with good stuff.  I can't wait to get it all read.

Next week is Princess' birthday. She is happily excited for her birthday.  I am so glad. I will be busy making the cake and I promise to post a picture.  Peanuts' birthday is five days after her sisters'.  I'll post her cake too.  It is my favorite part of the birthday celebrations.  The next week and a half I may not be around HSB too much.

I bought a new camera last week.  I need to spend some time figuring it out and downloading photos onto this computer.  I have a question----what is the difference between download and upload?  Can you use the terms interchangeably or do they have separate meanings.

Marsha said that the style of the 80's is making a come back. Didn't anyone tell these  people that it wasn't good then?  I thought of this because I saw it with my very own eyes.  A young lady was wearing a short white mini skirt with black legging tights that ended at the ankle. She had flat shoes too. I had visions of Cindy Lauper right before my eyes.  It was not pretty.

I feel sorry for all the people having a hard time with the heat.  I personally am delighted that the weather here is wonderful.  It isn't as warm as it usually is in August and it makes me a bit concerned that the warm days will end too early.

I am really hoping to post on what we are doing for school this fall. I have another little one entering our school.  It will be the first year I have all three in school.  I have it mostly figured out. I have a couple of things to order still.  Speaking of which I think I will go check out TOS store. Did you know that they don't charge for shipping?  Now, that is a deal.

Lastly, for all you laptop users that actually blog in their lap, what do you use for underneath your computer so your lap doesn't burn and your computer doesn't get too hot?  I need to find something and thought I'd ask around first for recommendations.   Thanks.

How's that for a nice rambling blog.

Sunday, July 23, 2006 - Basket

At the risk of getting you all to hate me I am posting a picture of another craft I made a couple of weeks ago for my friends' daughters' birthday.  They live on some property and this little girl loves to collect things she finds. The idea isn't mine; I saw it in a catalogue and decided that I could probably make it myself. Yes, I have a container of basket weaving supplies in my laundry room. I had to use it since it now gives me justification in keeping it. Hubby has been asking me lately if we needed to keep the container since it had been a while since I made a basket.

DSCF0002

This is Pixie modeling the basket for me.

DSCF0003

So several years ago my friend, Birdee, made a basket with a friend and decided that we needed to learn to make them too.  Well, she didn't need to twist my arm since I am a bit of a sucker for a new craft skill.  We learned to make them and then made several as gifts for Christmas one year.  I think we both made them as gifts at least a couple of different times.  I wish I could get one made for myself though.  They are a lot of fun and not too difficult to learn. They also come together pretty quickly.  I can make one in an evening.  There are many basket making websites offering supplies and patterns and directions.

I think I have this sickness, or compulsion to get myself involved in every craft on the planet.  When I see something I like, the first thing I ask is "can I make it?"  If I don't know how, then I figure out a way to learn.  I like the challenge of learning how and then accomplishing it.  I made the comment before and I will say it again. I am jack of all crafts, master at none.  I learn just enough to get me by and then I stop.  I usually decide I am going to make something for Christmas gifts and then I need to learn how.  The problem with this is, can you imagine how many different types of craft supplies I have?

You will be happy to know that there is one thing I am not good at.  Well, there are many, but in the craft department I am hopeless at rubber stamping or scrapbooking.  I just can't do it and I am ok with that.

Susan

(PS-I have this itch to learn to knit socks.  Won't they be fun Christmas presents?   I don't know how to knit them yet.  Maybe if I start now?  Someone, please make me stop!)

Sunday, June 11, 2006 - surfing around the house

Yahoooooo! My computer came and my hubby connected it to the internet-wireless. Now my laptop comes with me when I surf. This is so fun and so exciting. I'm sure the newness will wear off but right now I am in surfin' heaven! I love technology. Can you believe that it wasn't long ago that we couldn't talk to people around the world instantly? Amazing. Susan

Friday, March 10, 2006 - New friends

Guess what?  We are going over to Rebeca's house for dinner tonight.  See her blog here.  We met through blogging and realized we live in the same town, then realized we know several of the same people.   It is a small world and  I am truly a HSB nutcase!

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 - Photobucket

My photo space is all used up on HSB so I needed a new way to post photos.  I went to Photobucket and signed up and uploaded the picture below.  It has a little box that contained the html code for the photo. I copied it and pasted it in the testbox as I typed my post and ther eyou have it. I am so excited to have figured this out. It was so easy.  So now I will be posting more photos.
