• Oct. 1, 2006 - Depression - Sermon notes

Our pastor spoke on depression this morning. I thought the information was worth keeping.

Definition of depression:

Depression is a God given response (emotion) to a appropriate stimulation.

Men are 7 - 8 time more likely to be depressed than women. Mostly because women find someone to talk. Men tend to keep things to themselves.

Sermon Text - Psalms 42 Key Verse - Psalms 42:5, 11

John? Wesley and Charles Spurgon suffered from prolonged bouts of depression. David, Moses, Elijah, Jeremiah all suffered from times of depression.

Depression is to our emotional health what pain is to our physical health.

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Psalm 42:5a NIV

Sign of Depression

  • Physical exhaustion
  • Prolonged pain or illness
  • Spiritual coolness in your environment. Being surrounded by non-Christians who swear and treat others badly.
  • Extensive spiritual outpouring
Story of Elijah running away from Jezebel after his triumph over the priests of baal
  • Cycles of life
  • Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my savior and my God. Psalm 42:5b NIV

Remedy - the Word of God is True
Acknowledge the depression and determine how severe it is.

    Talk with a caring person

    Ask yourself

  • Am I exhausted - physically, spiritually?
  • Is this a cycle in my life
  • Read the following Psalms - 42, 43, 55, 58. 59. 143. Read these and even use them as prayers. Especially when it is hard to pray.
  • Seek out others to pray for you - not give advice or judgement, just pray for you. Remember, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are always in God's presence praying for you.
  • Don't be surprised when God provides a need. Example the angle bringing Elijah food in the wilderness.

    • Aug. 10, 2006 - Back to School

We are officially "back to school." We actually began when our math books arrived. The kids were so excited that they wanted to start their lessons right then. Christopher even did 5 lessons the first day!! This week we added Language arts/Reading, Science, and History. The kids had been working on different foreign languages all year. Nichole and Christopher are working on Japanese. Stephen is working on Spanish. The baby is learning Japanese, Spanish, and English just from the tapes and conversations around the house. When she finally begins to say words, I wonder what language it'll be? Rebecca, Stephen and Allistair started violin lessons last week after a six week summer break. Nichole will start her Senior year next week when the teens get back from their mission/service trip. This year I have one starting Kindergarten and one graduating. And only one preschooler/toddler. It's exciting!! Already the kids are helping one another; sometimes when I direct them too and sometimes just on their own.
