Snow and Hot Chocolate Movie Day
This morning we had snow.
Had I not looked outside when I got up, I still would've known because my 3 year old looked outside immediately and said, "Sister! Have you looked outside? It's like a MIRACLE!"
So in appropriate snow day fashion, we took the day off of "school". We played outside in the snow for the morning, then drove to my parents house and spent the middle part of the day sipping cocoa and watching silly movies (I mostly dozed on the couch, to be honest, but it was lovely).
We were sure to head home in the early afternoon because I wanted to avoid icy roads as the temperature dropped. Now, it being evening, I started to feel guilty about all the "schoolwork" we didn't do today. But as I thought about it, I realized how much "school" really happened. Playing outside? Our evening brisk walk in the snow? Hello?! P.E. Class! We scrapbooked for a couple hours in the evening...that's like art, reading, writing, spelling, storytelling, all rolled into one. My oldest sat and did Sudoku puzzles part of the evening too. Math!
And the hot cocoa and movies? Well, no good education is complete if you don't know when to step away from the busyness, snuggle up together, laugh, snooze and enjoy chocolate!

Sounds like you had a GREAT school day. My kids always seem to learn more on days off than on school days. Makes me think to give a second look at unschooling, at least for the science and history part of it. So, did you change your template??? Or do I just have a BAD memory? It hasn't been that long since I last stopped by, has it? ~K

That's too funny. A snow day off at home. My 11yo son looked at my annoyingly when he realized that other kids had the day off. I just smiled and said, "Sorry!" (we took WAY to much time off!)
But you're right about your events of the day. Sounds like an alternative school to me!

This is so interesting to read. For us, we cancel snow when the days warm up so that we can go outside and enjoy it! LOL

It snowed here Wed. and today, with the schools being closed today. Our kids played in the morning and we did school after lunch. I agree with you that learning happens everywhere, you can't stop it. One son was making a snowman. The other son was making the pyramids and then he went on to try the other seven wonders of the world (he's been reading about this). He was disappointed he didn't try to make the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I told him that would be a bit difficult with snow and he agreed. Nah, learning doesn't happen on snow days, does it? Drive carefully!

Oh, that is SO precious!!!!! (your 3 y/o's sweet lil' quote) Sounds like a lovely day! I wish it would snow here. I mean, we have snow on the ground, just a little, and it's been so cold that it hasn't melted away, but it's not enough to play in! Boo-hoo! It may snow tonight though. We love it too!
LOL! Yes, walking through the snow is definitely considered PE!
So much wisdom in that last line...
Love, Alyssa
