May. 13, 2008 - Outdoor Hour Challenge #9 - One Small Square

In an attempt to catch up and to take advantage of the beautiful British weather we're having at the moment, we decided to do another Nature Activity yesterday. We marked out a square with sides of 1 foot and then began to look in detail at what we could find inside that square.
As you can see, the square we chose to study is very overgrown with weeds. We found 7 stones, lots of weeds, several small sticks and two snails. Underneath most of these we found soil, but the snails were resting (probably sheltering from the sun) on the lush green leaves of a dandelion flower.

Can you spot the snail?

Littlesmurf then began to dig - he was very intent on what he was doing!

Whether he was hoping to find some buried treasure, I don't know, but he just kept on digging! Eventually, he admitted to having found just more stones, some crocus bulbs and lots of weed roots! Still, it meant that he got another dose of sunshine on those white legs, so that was a good thing for his health.
When we got inside, Littlesmurf decided to draw a picture of one of the snails we found in his journal - we looked it up and decided that it was a brown-lipped snail (very common throughout Britain).

I had to really convince myself that this was a snail since the only ones I have ever seen are just boring brown things but this one is beautiful. What a great nature study!
I love his drawing! Great job on this challenge.
