Jul. 15, 2008 - Outdoor Hour Challenge #21 - Nature Notebook Challenge

This week we have been set a challenge with a difference - to make notebooking/journaling more of a focal point in our Outdoor Hour activities! This is something that Littlesmurf has always found difficult, so it will be good to see him become more focussed on this part of Nature as well as actually going out and "doing" Nature Study.
We decided to follow up on something we noticed in our Seasonal Tree Study - one of the wild flowers growing at the base of our chosen tree.

Littlesmurf had already decided that this flower was part of the Clover family - so all we had to do was take a closer look and decide which form of clover it actually was! He began by sketching some of the flowers and leaves he had collected earlier.

From his observations, he came to the conclusion that this flower was a White Clover (Trifolium repens), a flower that is extremely common on grasslands in Britain. Littlesmurf was very intrigued by the fact that the clover's Latin name reflected the fact that its leaves were made up of three parts (as in trefoil). He also was surprised that the leaf stalks were not actually attached to the flower stalks - I wonder why? After sketching the parts of the clover, he wrote about what he had found out about it in his journal.

Finally, he added the clover flowers and leaves to the flower press ready to be added to his Nature Journal in a few weeks time.
