Mama to 3
Sep. 18, 2006 - I am having such a hard time with this highschool thing......

I don't post nearly as much as I should but here goes....  I am starting 9th grade with my oldest dear darling.  I have the Math down as we will be using Teaching Textbooks Algebra I this year.  The problem now is Science.  We are using Abeka's Physical Science 9th grade and I mean it is tough....  I have an elementary ed. background.  You do not teach the metric system in kindergarten.LOL   I wish sometimes we could just stick with History and Language Arts.  As you have probably guessed the Maths and Sciences are not my strong suit.  I am still so thankful for this opportunity and want it to be the best that it can be.  Anyway, if anyone has a better suggestion I sure would love to here it.

Blessings,

Trixi

I, too, have a blog over at homestead blogger (you are on my friends' list...I'm Patti over there). When I visited my friends' blogs tonight and went to your homestead blog, I learned that you had a homeschool blog as well, so I decided to visit.
I don't have any better suggestions for you, but I can tell you that you are not alone. And I hope that helps. I am schooling 9th and 11th this year, and we absolutely do NOT like math and science either. We are using ABEKA 9th grade this year, and I agree with you, it is tough (and boring according to my children!). My 9th grader is in Algebra I (Math U See), and my 11th grader is using ABEKA Consumer Math. The balance of everything else that we do is pretty much literature based...Total Language Plus for Language/Literature and Beautiful Feet for History. We far prefer the literature way of learning.
I have great support and insight from a friend who has already graduated 2. She didn't do any major amount of science...mostly just reading some books. And both of her children are attending college. And, more importantly, they are both walking with the Lord. She has reminded me that their relationship with Jesus is the most important thing. She is a mom of 9 and has been able to stand against the tides of opinion of people telling her what she should or should not teach. She has been willing to be different, and her children have not suffered for that. Even without studying physics and chemistry or calculus, they are pursuing careers of their choice in a university.
Anyhow, I don't know if that encourages you at all. I hope so.
Blessings,
Patti

Aug. 16, 2007 - Hi!

Hi!
I was 'browsing random blogs' and thought that I'd leave a comment even though your post is from last year!
I think that high school scares every homeschooling mom! But I was mostly self-educated throughout high school and learned what I needed to know without a 'formal' curriculum.
Remember "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you."
About ten years ago, when my youngest sister was about two and running around getting into everything, my Mom was discouraged because my other sister (age 6 at the time) couldn't get math. Then Mom read the verse above and realized that even if she didn't get anything else done she needed to read the Bible with us every morning. She did and five years passed without my sister being able to do math. But now my sister balances the checkbook and helps pay the bills every month. Mom believes that this happened because she put God first.
So anyways, just remember, when things get hard, and someone isn't learning something, God isn't someday going to ask you whether you taught them calculus. Work hard for what REALLY matters!
OK, anyways! Sorry that this is such a long comment!
Have a great day! And enjoy your up-coming next year of Home schooling!
