A Tale of A Multicultural Family........................Life As We Know It

Oct. 14, 2008 - money for education??

I have been hit with serious culture shock now that my eldest daughter is in public school. I have always been under the impression that the public school system, although always in need of some money, received funding from various sources. I am apparently bady mistaken.

She is in the 4th grade. The school supply list was long, and it cost me about $60 to get everything. Then there was a $35 classroom fee and a $5 lab fee. They have sent home 4 (or 5...I have lost count) fundraisers already. The kids are asked to bring in a board game (to contribute to a basket to be raffled off at the fall festival), breakfast food donations (for food drive), a brown sack full of "goodies" like school supplies, candy & stickers (also has something to do with the fall festival), fruit snacks for the sock hop...and this was just in the last 2 weeks. They bring home a Book Fair order form (remember those?!) every month...but it's not just 1...there is usually 5 of them. She already knows I am more than happy to purchase the $1 book (they usually have 1 or 2 of those....but don't ask me for more...we have library cards darnit!) Oh ya...the school tshirt ($15) cuz they wear them every friday - school spirit day. School pictures. Art project that can be turned into various objects...how could I pass that up?! I opted for the magnet.

I do not mean to complain...it is all for a very good purpose. I have just been suprised by it all. It seems every week there is something new in her backpack that sends me to the store.

OK...I gotta run. My youngest just came in here sniffling, and there is blood smeared all over her cheeks and back of hand. Apparently we have a bloody nose.

I am a former homeschooling mom of 3. Still very active in the education of my kids. This is a place for me to relax, learn some HTML, vent about the public school system, and share my experiences with anyone interested.
