The end of summer

Posted in Farm Life

Our summer vacation is almost over. We've had a very full, fun and busy summer. Baseball and 4-H were major events all summer long. Our 4-H fair was last week and the kids did very well. All 3 kids were in several projects, so it seemed like we were always running to one meeting or another. They were all in ceramics. This is a picture of all their ceramics projects this year.

The pictue doesn't do them justice. The large cross is metallic copper, and the parts that show up as black are really blue. The cross, done by my oldest, won best of show this year.

As the fair got closer, we spent a lot of time getting our animals ready.

Janelle practicing her "showmanship" with Snowflake, her favorite bunny.

All 4 pigs got a bath

Even the chickens needed a bath!

Showing one of the rabbits to the judge. This one got a blue ribbon.

The boys showing their pigs, also blue ribbon winners.

Now that the fair is done, we've taken this last week to relax and start working on the required record books for 4-H. Everybody agrees that the record books are the least favorite part of the 4-H year.

School starts on Monday. I'm ready, but the kids say they're not.

Baby kittens

Posted in Farm Life

We have a new batch of kittens in our barn. This is a good thing, because we are down to only one female cat, although we seem to have plenty of tomcats. Here's some pictures of the new arrivals. Actually, they're already a few weeks old. We don't always find the kittens right away, and that is a good thing because the kids aren't as tempted to hold them too soon.

It's "moooving" day

Posted in Farm Life
No, we're not moving. Our cows are. At least, when they're being milked. For the last several months,  our barn has been under construction. We've been building a new milking parlor. This morning, my husband milked in the old barn for the last time. Right now, the construction workers are busy switching everything over so that tonight, the cows will be milked in the new parlor. We're excited about it. It should mean less time spent milking cows, the ability to milk more cows, and easier milking (ie: not as much strain on knees, backs, shoulders, etc). WooHoo!!

Baby kittens

Posted in Farm Life
This story is too cute not to pass along. We have a dog out here, named Buddy. We also have a bunch of farm cats. Most of the cats have the typical dog-cat realationship with Buddy--they don't really get along, although some tolerate him more than others. There is one cat in the barn, named Rat (don't know how she got that name), that seems to be Buddy's friend. Rat had kittens recently. She had them in the feed cart during milking. My husband, needing the feed cart for feeding the cows, carefully moved Rat and her babies to a safer, warmer box. Rat, however, kept trying to get her kittens out, so my husband blocked the door to the box, to keep the kittens safe during milking. Once milking was done, he unblocked the door. Out came Rat, with a kitten in her mouth. She brought the kitten over to Buddy, proudly showed off her baby, and returned, kitten in mouth, to the box. All she wanted was to show her friend her babies. It was so cute!
