• Dec. 2, 2008 - Swiss Family Robinson

We have been listening to classics on librivox
Swiss Family Robinson has been such a treat for Luke - he is excited to be at the last two chapters and ready to move onto Treasure Island!
Don't miss out on this great public domain resource!

I also found that on The Homeschool Helper
there are many free unit studies outlined that are great follow up for reading through each chapter of a good book and adding to the discussion.

• Sep. 8, 2008 - Anticipating BABY!

Posted in Media

A few days ago it was HOT & muggy with rain and we needed something to distract from the uncomfortable circumstance.
Timmy took a whole bunch of pictures in our master bedroom aka the family bedroom while I posed and the little girls played with the baby toys I was putting together. Luke helped take some shots too.
What FUN!
Tonight we tried putting together a video for the first time that we could post publicly -we used an online resource. . .  I am still trying to understand how to get one from our Mac to the blogs.
I spent time teaching Luke  -as I was learning He is ready to try on his own tomorrow.
Enjoy!

• Jul. 22, 2007 - Dad builds the Boys Computers

Posted in Media
Daddy is using secondhand parts and building the boys their own computers. We had two-three old monitors work only to die in a short time so dad was real happy to come across this monitor brand new at deep discount. We really don't like the flat screens that are popular now cuz well how long do you think it could last in this house? The monitors seem more sturdy and can't be upset on the table top or pushed off etc..

Timmy getting ready to try out the new screen.

Dad made this funny of the boys about using their computers for their educational games.  Sorry I can't seem to get the image to  enlarge.  The children have a lifetime worth of educational games. Here are just some of the titles we invested in before the library find of over fifty titles.

Mia Math
Mia Reading
Dr. Seuss Kindergaten
Disney Pixar 1st  Grade
Aurthur's Computer Adventure
Jesus wants all of me
Adventure Workshop Preschool-1st Grade
Dr. Seuss Preschool
Jump Start Kindergarten
Reader Rabbit Kindergarten
Reader Rabbit Dreamship tales
The Cat in the hat
Sponge Bob typing
The little engine that could
Winnie the Pooh-Rainy Day Activity Center
The incredible toon machine
Big Thinkers First Grade

We'd bought many and then about three months ago we had a great opportunity to buy the old i macs and educational software that our local library was trying to find a new home for.
They knew we are one of the only local mac users around and offered them to us for 50.00 with all the programs they'd used on them. Two computers and over thirty software programs. All subject matters at all levels of learning for the whole family!

We started out computer dumbies in 2005 and although Mike knows a lot more than me I am comfortable in basic computing for the first time in my life ( probably due to Mike's continual support and patience).

Michael has one main hobby that he started spring of 2005 and that is learning everything he can about computers Apples/ Mac s in particular! He loves this and it is a perfect thing for him because;  a) It helps him help me with one major part of our HS b) It gives him marketable skills for future employment c) He can share his skill with the children. We hope that the boys can have some kind of self employment and use computer skills to get farther training ie. First time job in some computer business to farther fund their education. d) Did I mention that Dad get's home in the early am hours and we are all asleep so to wind down he does quiet work on the computer or reads computer manuals ~ and he doesn't instantly fall asleep in the attempt like I do. How perfect.

**** I will admit having struggles with envy of this cuz I never have that kind of freedom to pursue anything. Even the most important operations of this household never get that kind of attention cuz of the constant interruptions. BUT I have seen God's hand in this situation and He really has blessed us in this.

So we have an in house computer support  person on dad. Thanks Dad for all the hard work!

My dear husband created with no prompting from me a new way to review with the kids. They started making slide shows on the computer using clip art. They had a great time with their first attempt ( an ABC  show with pictures that go with each letter ) They also plan to add voice overs.

This can branch out into part of their unit studies as well.

What a great way for Dad to enter into the lessons with them.
