Beggar's Night
I had so much fun tonight. It was our neighborhood Beggar's Night, and the kids were exceptionally anxious to wear their new costumes for the first time. We always make them wait until the night of trick-or-treat. They dress-up all the time, so it makes for a special evening if they have to wait to wear the new costumes. Tonight, they were a Star Wars Clone Trooper and Barbie Mariposa. I had a blast getting Ava all dolled up as Lukas repeatedly stepped into the bathroom to see if we were almost done with the process. He just wanted to get on with it. I can't blame him. He's a boy! Ava, on the other hand, was thrilled with the process. I gave her a simple up-do, curled her hair for the first time (she has natural curl, but I was going for a certain look tonight), sprayed it with gold sparkles and let her wear my make-up. It was her first mascara experience, which was fun. I love playing dress-up with my little girl. She was so happy to have the full beauty treatment and to look and feel so grown-up.

We walked through our neighborhood for an hour. Trick-or-treat is two hours around here, but how much candy does a kid need? Besides that, Ava started asking to be carried about 15 minutes before we got home, and both kids wanted dinner. An hour really was long enough for our little cherubs. It was a fun, family evening. I love nights like this. The kids were so happy, and we had such a great time just being together. Our family has family nights often. More families should plan simple family fun nights. It's worth it.

I came across a couple of costumes that I decided were my favorite this evening. I asked a group of boys who looked to be 11 or 12 who were riding bicycles from house to house (why?) what they were dressed as because they were obviously dressed as nothing. Two of them told me they were dressed as models. HA! Another told me he was a cocoa puff (he was African American). Kudos on the creativity on both counts. I laughed pretty hard at their answers. I also saw a teen (I'm pretty sure I stopped trick-or-treating at 11) with a large magnet hanging from his neck (it was made from fabric) with little chicks stuck to it. I saw him twice before I understood that he was a "chic magnet." So, that's not exactly a good, moral costume, but it was pretty creative. I love seeing what others dress as.

We came home and raided the new candy supply. After we had dinner(yep, you read that correctly. The candy supply was raided before dinner), the kids showered and headed to bed. They're still awake. It may be a while before all that sugar allows their little bodies to relax enough to actually sleep. It's worth it for one night of fun each year. Don't you think?

We also carved pumpkins this week, though we did it on a different night. Lukas carved the Batman symbol onto his pumpkin. I free-handed it, so it wasn't perfect, but he carved it extremely well with no help! We had to encourage him to do so because he was nearly beside himself worrying that it wouldn't be absolutely perfect. It looks great! Ava carved a cat onto her pumpkin, and I was very impressed that she did it without help. Eric had to go over her cuts in a few spots to loosen it up and pop it out, but she did it all by herself! I love to carve pumpkins, so I got my own this year and attempted to carve Scooby Doo with a pattern. It took a while, but I thought it turned out alright. It doesn't glow quite as well as the kids' do, but I am happy with it. Check out the pictures on Facebook!

Two family nights in one week. It's a good week when that happens. This week has been busy but nice. We're back into our regular routine, and it feels good. There is much going happening in our family about which we need to pray, but we know that God is going to provide for all of our needs in His perfect way, so life is good.
