At a Loss...

Posted in Holidays

...for words that is.  Any close friend of mine would find that quite unbelievable!  No, truthfully, I'm going through one of those "stale" times in my life where inspiration is eluding me at all costs.  I know I'm not the only one who experiences these dry times.  Times when everything in my life seems to be on hold, including my walk with God.  Oh, how I dread these times.  I'm not sure what brings them on, but I do know for sure that it seems no matter what I do, only God's timing will bring it to pass.  And I know He uses all things for His glory and our good, so I hold steadfastly to this Truth.

Perhaps some of it has to do with the holidays being upon us.  I'm one of those people who every year ends up feeling overwhelmed.  Don't get me wrong, I love so many things about the holidays.  Especially the magical feeling I get from the twinkling lights and warm feelings I get when listening to Christmas music.  But for some reason, I struggle with a general feeling of being overwhelmed all through the season which serves to rob a big chunk of the joy from me.

As a general rule in regular everyday life I feel great pressure from expectations.  Mostly ones I put upon myself.  Ones that I continually battle with to put into the real Truth and right perspective.  When Christmas rolls around, my "to do" list, like everyone else's grows in size and that much more pressure befalls me.  There's talk of doing so many wonderful things with our children such as advent, crafts, music, cooking/baking, making sure everything's focused on God.  A quick peruse through a couple of blogs and my heart sinks at the beautiful and wonderful things people are doing with their kids.  And then there's gift shopping and wrapping, Christmas cards, special dinners and engagements.  Oh how I love all these things, but when I pile them on top of my already "just trying to get basic schoolwork done in 5 hours" days, well I'm sure to get overwhelmed with it all.

So my big question: "How do I make and keep Christmas simple, not feeling the pressure to make it anything more than what it's supposed to be?"

If you're still with me, bless you!  See, I told you my friends would never believe I was at a loss for words!

Nov. 26, 2007 - Hi Melissa

Thanks for coming by my blog. I'm sorry you're feeling so down...I've not been feeling the best either...the change in time always does it to me...the darker evenings and dark mornings really get to me. Maybe that's what is causing you to feel bad. Maybe all of us just need a girls night out to have a rest from the teaching, housework, schoolwork, etc...I love being with my husband and daughter and I don't really have "girlfriends" to spend time with, so it's hard sometimes...

Nov. 26, 2007 - I failed to get

Posted by nancysnook
My comment across...I used to do work with abuse victims, homeless shelters, and illiterate folks and share my time with them...it may have only planted half a seed, but it lifted my spirits a great deal. I shop on Christmas Eve and I don't wrap presents, I do send cards out and honestly that means more to me than all the presents! You shouldn't feel like you have to fulfill anyone else's "to do" list but your own..the Bible teaches to take care of your husband and family FIRST...that's really all your focus should be on. I can't afford to do more than that so I don't think about buying for anyone else. Enjoy the time while your children are young, for these are the times THEY will remember most~ It truly is...this will be the FIRST time in almost 9 years that I get to have Christmas eve and day with my daughter, so that's exciting for us! Time with the family, you and your husbands children....time my dear, time. For many years I was completely alone on Christmas and I got such joy out of just driving and seeing the decorations on Christmas day. Start a new tradition with your family. I hope that helps you some.

Here's my answer, though I'm not sure I follow through very well! ;)

I cut back on "regular" school in December. Bible time is soley focused on some sort of Christmas study. I try to finish up other science/history type studies early, so we can spend at least a couple of weeks doing Christmas baking, crafts, experiments and such instead. I involve the kids in Christmas cards and call it writing time! I say yes to the really fun extras and pass on the others.

All in all, December is much less structured for school. (Which is why I'm always ready to get back to the regular schedule come January!)

Good luck! And, yes, I knew you weren't "really" at a loss for words! :o)

Love,
Cindy

I can understand the feelings you are having. I can have them, even when it's not the holiday season. I make this long list, thinking it's what the Lord wants me to do, only to find out it wasn't the same as His list. My list just wears me to a frazzle, His list strengthens and encourages me. I so wish I could follow His list more often. I just so get in the way. I pray the Lord shows you all He has for you and that you rest in that. :)

I don't know about "wise" words but I like what JoAnn said, stop getting in the way of yourself, in other words...very wise woman!!! I should get to know her too.

Nov. 27, 2007 - Me too!

I was just thinking about this today and your words - or loss for words - seemed to sum up my exact situation. I kept thinking I'd write a list of the absolute necessities. But I've done that and at the last minute - the items I left off - sneak back on. Honestly, I feel this way about my everyday life too, just not as intense. I think because of the full facial affront of materialism at Christmas I feel extra pressure to emphasize Jesus and giving. I'm still stewing on it all - but I really appreciate your comments. You encourage me to not give up and keep seeking God's will for our family at the holidays. As pray for His guidance in my life - I will ask for it in your as well. Thanks for the award!

Nov. 27, 2007 - Thank you for saying something!

LOL, okay I really thought that I was the only person that felt that way for Christmas. Since having kids, I feel like I'm terrible for not doing "EVERYTHING" that I see other people doing or things I see on TV or what my friends do. There are thousands of things to do for Christmas and I never grew up with some of the traditions that a lot of people have. However, I am working on making my own traditions. Something the kids know each year we will do no matter how smalll I think it may be. It's funny because I see you and know what all you do and I feel like gosh, why can't I do that? Hey, I would of loved to have you has a mom!

Christmas is a wonderful holiday but over the years I am realizing that I want to be really careful to keep it stress-free. I do buy gifts for our children and family but only when it's peaceful and when it's not going to become chaotic. We're doing gifts on a day after Christmas to focus on Jesus' birthday per hubby's request. Not saying that you should do any of these things only that I am not big on being busy.

I have made it my goal in life to cut out stress as much as possible! :) We still enjoy life and I'm able to do a lot with the children just the same. We might not do the traditional things that others do but we're still happy ;)

Often times when I'm having those quiet moments I feel it is a good time to reflect/think about life. Sounds like you were doing the same :)

I stuck with you "Miss Loss For Words". LOL. I felt like this last month, b/c we had both sides of my family at our house for Thanksgiving, plus my sister's wedding, and a new job to top it off. All of it went really well though, with lots of organization and pre-planning. I was so relaxed when everyone was here, that I forgot to take pictures. We have Christmas for both sides of my family at our house too. We have something going on every weekend, starting with this weekend. It's busy, busy, busy, but oh so sweet to be able to spend the time with loved ones. It's a shame that we try to cram visits in with family in one month. We should really get together with them more often. I will be praying for you. Congrats on the awards.

Blessings,
Lori

Nature Notes

The artic chill is on! Temps haven't been out of the 30's for days. Brrrr! The woods in back have been cracking as if moaning with pain from the cold. But already, the beauty of winter is emerging as well: birds have been overly plentiful at the feeders, the sky is so clear the stars are like shining beacons in the night, the morning dew is frozen into millions of crystals on the grass that reflect the rising sun, and now that we have a clear view into the woods again we are daily seeing wild turkeys and deer passing by.

Close encounters of the "chipmunk" kind! Hannah was out on the patio watching the birds at the feeders and in a split second a little chipmunk ran around the corner obviously unaware of her presence. That was until he came face to toes with her in a standoff! Then, cheeks puffed full of bird seed, he proceeded to zip like lightning right between her legs and dashed into safety. Hannah exclaimed, "Mom, I can't breathe, that was so cool!"

Our first snowfall!! The kids and I couldn't wait to wrap up warm and get outside for nature time. The flakes were so big and wet AND yummy! We had such fun dancing and spinning around in our winter wonderland!

Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
