Finally! ~ The Elusive Pileated Woodpecker

Posted in Birding

We've been seeing very small glimpses of him for a week now..but he was so quick to fly away, we could never really observe in detail.  But...sometime within the last week my son managed to hear and remember their call.  Here's how I know....

Today, right when we were getting school started this morning, Alex jumped out of his seat and exclaimed, "That's him Mom, that's him!"  You see the window was open in our schoolroom for the first time in months because today's temperature got to a balmy 65 degrees, yes spring is coming.  I asked Alex, "That's who?"  He said, "Listen Mom, that's the Pileated Woodpecker!"  To which I looked at him rather quizzical wondering how my son could know there was a woodpecker visiting us.  "Listen Mom," he persisted.  Suddenly I heard a loud "Kic, Kic, Kic, Kic, Kic" sound (slow then faster) vibrating through the window from a short distance away.  Listen to this sound here: Pileated Woodpecker

In lickety split all three of us were up gawking out our back window into the woods.  My jaw nearly hit the floor as I saw this beautiful very large woodpecker with a stout red crest sitting on a large old log right on the edge of the woods by the creek at the bottom of our yard.  He was calling away with a loud command as if he was summoning our attention.  While he was still too far away for me to get a good photo, he sat there widdling, no drilling away at that log for a long time, giving us a great view and time of observation.  As he was starting to fly away I got a video on my camera of him, it's not a great video, but at least now I have proof!!  Just watch for movement, you'll see him!  You'll also hear my way overexcited son in the background telling me "he's ginorman," that's his way of saying gigantic and enormous together!  And my daughter trying to shush him!

So, we put up the Math and Language Arts for awhile and seized this opportunity to read in the Handbook of Nature Study about bird beaks, read in a couple study field guides about the Pileated Woodpecker, observed  Natural Path's beautiful Pileated Woodpecker pictures, and...

Went out after the woodpecker left and observed the log, triple WOW!

We collected some shavings from the tree and Hannah did an entry for her nature journal

Alex begged me to make a paper Pileated Woodpecker outline, and he took it and decorated it.  I was amazed at the physical details he remembered and put on the outline.

He then proceeded to fly it around, with detailed and accurate sound effects and all, inside and outside all the rest of the day!

We used to see tons of woodpeckers up north.
Then we moved here to FL. I actually didn't think many lived here...
Till one day..
This HUGE woodpecker came into our yard. They are A LOT bigger down here for some reason.

Love hearing your daughter so excited. Don't you love it!

I LOVE how excited your son is in the video - well, his voice. And, I love how you dropped everything and went with the "real" learning experience. I love the holes in the wood and how you did nature pages. Just an incredible day, huh?

What a great story. Don't you love the excitement the kids have about such simple things. It's great. I envy you with 65 degrees.

Just wanted to reply to your comment to my blog. I just posted about my cameras tonight! And, yes, I love to get out in nature by myself. My dd's classes are at a church, but it is surrounded by trees. Lately, I've been taking some time while she's in class just to go on my own walk - with my camera. :-)

A good resource for moss: I'm enjoying the book Plants Without Leaves by Ross E. Hutchins. My friend Robin at martinzoo found some videos to teach about the lifecycle of a moss http://www2.auckland.ac.nz/info/schools/nzplants/moss_intro.htm - I haven't really looked at these. I'll be doing more research this week.

One last comment about moss:
After looking online, the anatomy of a moss is pretty complicated. I'd probably stick to what was in Ross' book and what I posted on my blog (http://alexml.blogspot.com/2008/03/challenge-4-focus-plants-without-leaves.html), but it depends on you & your kids!

And, a GREAT science site is Waynes World. He doesn't have a lot about moss, but you might look here: http://waynesword.palomar.edu/bryoph1.htm. Also, you might just browse his site - great photos and lots of info that is easy to understand.

We are so blessed to see so many of God's beautiful winged creatures. I think I get more excited than my children when one comes to my feeder outside my kitchen window. School definitely stops until the precious beauty leaves. I love your ideas to build on those teachable moments.

What a beautiful sound this woodpecker makes. Thanks for the link to listen.

And the excitement in your son's voice made me smile from ear to ear. What a beautiful moment for all of you.....

Love the journal entry, the addition of the pieces of wood is super. And whoa mama on those 3 holes the woodpecker made, thats impressive!

Had to laugh & smile as I imagined your son zooming through the house with his newly fashioned bird.

I'd call that a super day indeed!!!!

Your son is too precious - LOVE his enthusiasm! I am still grinning from ear to ear after viewing the video and hearing him. :-)

I haven't seen our friends since that Sunday, but I know they've been here because the pine tree in our wooded area definitely shows the signs. They have done some major work on it! I am very impressed with the projects your kids did. I am still trying to coax my oldest into drawing more and doing a nature journal. He's the one that never liked to draw, color, etc. from the start. My little guy is a completely different story. He wants to draw (scribble) and color all day long.

What a great post! Our children's enthusiasm for nature is so infectious. My daughter actually gasped in horror when her public school teacher Dad told her that public school students don't get to study real birds at school. I LOVE Nature Study!

It just doesn't get any better than that! Your son is excited and enthusiastic about the woodpecker and I love his new word. My son was hear watching with me and now I am sure he will be using the word around our house. :)

Thanks for sharing your experience.

DS is HI...I just love this post. I am going to try and ID some birds myself (being a nature newbie) and then look up their sounds and see if DS can help me over the course of a couple of months, figure out what's what! how fun!

Nature Notes

The artic chill is on! Temps haven't been out of the 30's for days. Brrrr! The woods in back have been cracking as if moaning with pain from the cold. But already, the beauty of winter is emerging as well: birds have been overly plentiful at the feeders, the sky is so clear the stars are like shining beacons in the night, the morning dew is frozen into millions of crystals on the grass that reflect the rising sun, and now that we have a clear view into the woods again we are daily seeing wild turkeys and deer passing by.

Close encounters of the "chipmunk" kind! Hannah was out on the patio watching the birds at the feeders and in a split second a little chipmunk ran around the corner obviously unaware of her presence. That was until he came face to toes with her in a standoff! Then, cheeks puffed full of bird seed, he proceeded to zip like lightning right between her legs and dashed into safety. Hannah exclaimed, "Mom, I can't breathe, that was so cool!"

Our first snowfall!! The kids and I couldn't wait to wrap up warm and get outside for nature time. The flakes were so big and wet AND yummy! We had such fun dancing and spinning around in our winter wonderland!

Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

Quotable
"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
