Green Hour Challenge #7

This week's nature walk was accomplished on my parent's property, it was a nice change of scenery, with some new things to look at.  For us, this walk was all about signs of spring!  We are all suffering from an acute case of end of winter blues; so it was timely for us to be searching out the hope of a sunny, warm day on the horizon.  I'm happy to proclaim that hope was found!

 SIGNS OF SPRING

We observed lots of signs of spring as you can see in the pictures above.  We also spent a few minutes again practicing "quietness" to listen to the sounds around us.  The kids are getting better at this!  We heard lots of different birds, and are working diligently to learn to identify more and more songs.  So far, we know the Pileated Woodpecker, Red-Bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker (just learned this week), Eastern Towhee, Crow, Mourning Dove, and Blue Jay (just learned this week).  And just this evening Alex announced to me that he knows the sound an American Robin makes and proceeded to mimic it.  I, foolishly, chose to doubt him again, until of course we pulled the sound up on the internet, and yep you guessed it, bingo, right on!  I think he knows a lot more of them than I do; this all just by being out in nature!

Also, in honor of our signs of spring, we discussed the fact that birds are making nests now for their eggs and we had fun with a project that I learned about on Barb's blog.  We made a Nesting Materials Bag.  We stuffed an empty onion bag with scraps of yarn, napkins, brown paper bags, cotton stuffing, grass clippings, and cat hair (seems ironic doesn't it?!).  I cut a few holes in the bag to make sure the birds could get at the pieces.

We secured the top of the bag with a rubber band, and hung it outside near our feeders.  Our hope is that we may notice some of these materials in a bird nest in the future.

For our study of a focus area item this week (Birds)...well it sort of found us...we had a great time identifying a new bird  to our backyard.  We were blessed to observe and study the Northern Flicker, I wrote a post about our encounter HERE.

Oh, and to celebrate our nature walk this week, when we returned back to my parent's house, we made these cute little candy bird's nests which I had found out about at Kim's Blog.  They were so yummy and fun to make!  Thanks for sharing this Kim, they wen't along perfectly with our studies.

I am so glad that you found some signs of spring. :)

Keep us posted on the bird nesting bag. We still need to find something to hang our materials in. I'm going to the grocery on Friday so maybe then I will spy something I can use.

Thanks for posting.

I'm still loving all the signs of spring on your parents property.....Yippeee!! Wonderful pictures everytime I come.

Yes, please do take the chopsticks/bird bill's idea. It was great fun! And we learned something too. Tee Hee He

And I have to say, kudos to your dd for comparing the water running off a birds feathers to Jesus washing away our sins, that is priceless understanding ~ and way to go mom too. You are doing something right!

I think our families are on the same path in more than just our learning style. Jesus has a lot more to show us about His awesome love and majesty in the days ahead....we just need to open our eyes and ears, spirtually as well as physically. Yeeee Hawww!!

Bless you Melissa!!!

I love the candy nests!! Too cute!
Well done to your son for being able to mimic bird calls - I can never tell a "tweet" from a "twitter"! LOL!
Lovely signs of spring, too - we got to do our Nature Walks near my Dad's home in Wales these past two weeks - they seem to be closer to Spring than we are!!

I love the nesting materials idea. We found birds this morning picking the lining off from around our trampoline to use for nesting material. Maybe if we provide them with some alternatives they will leave our trampoline alone... I love your pictures. I am so anxious for warm weather!

We made nesting bags a couple years ago and it was neat seeing the birds fly away with stuff to build their nests.

Those edible bird nests look YUMMY!

I love seeing what you guys do each week. Thanks so much for taking the time to share with others. :o)

How do you do school at a table in a schoolroom on such a gorgeous day? High of 80 degrees, low humidity, puffy white clouds, gentle breeze...outside we go!

  • The rains have yet again brought on two more new wildflowers - Tall Ironweed and Lance-Leaved Goldenrod, both found down by the creek.

Alex caught a Dog-Day Cicada thats wing had been damaged, we had lots of fun observing and learning about cicadas today.

Our friend and new pet, the American Toad, is still doing quite well, he has a big appetite!

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
