Clouds Unit - Two More Great Resources

Posted in Cloud Study

1)  While sifting through books from my library I found another great read for studying clouds:

The Man Who Named the Clouds

by Julie Hannah and Joan Holub

About this book:  Born in England in 1772, Luke Howard began keeping a weather journal when he was 10 years old. He maintained an interest in weather and clouds all his life, though he supported himself and his family as a chemist. In 1802, he proposed a system of classifying clouds into seven types, basing their names on the Latin words cirrus, cumulus, and stratus. His system was adopted and, in adapted form, is still used today. This colorful book balances biographical and historical information with basic weather science, presented in the form of a modern child's monthly weather journal. Artwork includes reproductions of a portrait of Howard and his own paintings of clouds.

2) Also, Lori from Camp Creek Press thoughtfully lead me to this absolutely fantastic and FREE e-book:

Take a Cloud Walk

 by Jane Kirkland

I've added both of these resources to my original Clouds Unit Study post.

Oh I'm glad you ran across that book, b/c its been on my desk here to email you and let you know I found it. The Man Who Named the Clouds. Very cool, isnt it?! reminds me of John James Audobon -- The Boy Who Drew Birds.

You are doing so well!!!!! I'm eager to get started next week on a new study.

How do you do school at a table in a schoolroom on such a gorgeous day? High of 80 degrees, low humidity, puffy white clouds, gentle breeze...outside we go!

  • The rains have yet again brought on two more new wildflowers - Tall Ironweed and Lance-Leaved Goldenrod, both found down by the creek.

Alex caught a Dog-Day Cicada thats wing had been damaged, we had lots of fun observing and learning about cicadas today.

Our friend and new pet, the American Toad, is still doing quite well, he has a big appetite!

    ~ William Shakespeare

"I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in."
    ~ George Washington Carver

"Reading about nature is fine, but if a person walks in the woods and listens carefully, he can learn more than what is in books, for they speak with the voice of God."
    ~ George Washington Carver

"Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty."
    ~John Ruskin

  • Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

    Can Nature Teach?

    Quotable
"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
