Learning to Let Go

The last couple of school weeks have not been easy for us.  I'm talking specifically about structured school.  Nature study and other non-textbook studies are always easy, but anything which requires sitting at a table and focusing has been truly disasterous.

Perhaps it's been the distraction of the beautiful weather and longing so much to be outside all the time, or the noise of the large construction equipment working at building a new house next door, but I'm thinking it's both those things and just plain needing a break from the structured schedule.  As it is we limit our structured learning to the morning hours, but it seems even thats been too much lately.  And instead of Mom doing as she should and reading the signs, I've been fighting it and making us all quite miserable.

The truth is I've been just as distracted as they've been, but just too stubborn to want to give up the schedule before my planner says it's time.  Yesterday and today, we all met our breaking point and we've been heavy into spending most of the day working through our ugliness.  So, beyond the talking and tears another lesson has been learned....Learn when to let go.

Oh, that's such a hard one for me!  I'm an insufferable control freak!  I know this is really surprising perhaps, but the Lord has done great work on me this last year to let go the way I have been with nature study and other things; and just let my children learn at a more natural pace for them.  You see, somewhere in my perfect worldly dreams I wanted to see my children being scholarly, book smart, able to pass all the tests with flying colors as everyone around me stood cheering and clapping for how "intelligent" they are.  For unfortunately this is how the world measures success.  I am so ashamed  that I have thought this way!  For this is NOT God's measure of success.

God blessed me with two very unique children who are full of wonderful talents and abilities and simply amaze me with these things every day.   And over the years, He has gradually taught me to let go of these preconceived, world taught ideas of what makes a person successful.  And start using His truth to measure our successes.  We are always progressing, in some ways astronomically and in others at a much slower pace....but always progressing.

Admist the turmoil, we've still be having fun outside.  I'll be posting soon about all our wonderful "hands-on" fun learning about dandelions; while we take a much needed earlier than planned break from structured studies.

Yep, it's getting to be that time of year. The beautiful weather has definitely been a distraction for us as well...however, a welcomed and fun distraction.

I can totally relate to the control freak thing. I'm not sure why I was "blessed" with that "ability"! Ha! Hang in there. You are so good with your nature studies and all...go with what works and curb the rest if needed. Table work pales in comparison!

Blessings,
Melissa

Amen sister! I could have wrote that the last couple weeks. We've ended our own structured studies, ( we've met the law requirements ) but I'm wanting to have the kids keep going just a little on a couple things with math...but some of it has been a drag! UGH!

Letting go....something we can all use a reminder on, not just with our kids' studies, but in other areas of life. Thank you for allowing God to use you yet again to bring a breath of fresh air my way.

Have a fantastic weekend!!

I have watched an amazing transformation take place with you this year! The things you are doing with the kiddos is enviable, to say the least!! Keep trying to figure out the bookwork stuff, the Lord will lead you in the right direction.

For the final few weeks this year, how 'bout some writing and reading that go along with the WONDERFUL nature and art topics you're doing? I bet a quick surf of the internet would give you some nature-themed math, too.

I've prayed for you today. Love you!

"anything which requires sitting at a table and focusing has been truly disasterous."

Oh, Melissa! I could have written this post myself. Yesterday I was getting so frustrated with GB because he wouldn't sit and do some math. We, too, are finished with all the curriculum that our state requires. And he knows it! So, it's hard to convince him to do anything that seems book-ish. I don't know.... maybe I shouldn't worry about it. I just feel like I have to keep up with the educating because all our neighbor kids are still in school. You know what I mean?
Thanks for a thought provoking post. I'm really enjoying your blog.

I am so proud of you! Those kiddos of yours are so blessed to have a mommy that is such an excellent teacher! They will remember all the cool stuff that you guys did concerning your nature studies versus the seatwork. I wish I were more of a control freak in the area of school. I tend to be lured outside too easily with the kids following close behind. Keep up the good, I mean excellent work and don't be too hard on yourself. BTW we saw a Blue Grosbeak (I noticed one of your interests was birding) this morning! It's the second one that we've seen since moving out to the country two years ago. We too enjoy watching and identifying birds. Have a blessed day! Julie

Charlotte Mason Quotable
"It would be well if we all persons in authority, parents and all who act for parents, could make up our minds that there is no sort of knowledge to be got in these early years so valuable to children as that which they get for themselves of the world they live in. Let them once get touch with Nature, and a habit is formed which will be a source of delight through life. We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 61
