From what I understand, the first day or more they eat the protective covering.  And then I need to get some lettuce boiling. - How to Raise Tadpoles

American Toad

 Eastern American Toad

There has been much excitement in our house today.  The kids found some eggs in a nearby pond, well it's more like a water hole.  After looking them up, we think we have Eastern American Toad eggs, they are the only ones that seem to fit the description (Frog and Toad Egg Identification)  They are in long strands, like a necklace and the little babies inside are black.  If anyone is an expert in this area, do you know if we are right in our assessment that they are American Toads?  I've never hatched tadpoles, so I guess we've got some research to do!  You can click on the below image and hit "full size" to enlarge.

Resources:

Peepers and Leapers - Study comparing two life cycles of a frog and toad (Spring Peeper and American Toad)

Main differences between toads and frogs:

- Toads have rough and bumpy skin, frogs are smooth and shiny

- Toads' eggs are laid in strings, frogs' eggs are laid in masses.

- Toads hibernate in the ground, many frogs hibernate in mud, ponds and lakes.

- Toads generally feed at night, most frogs feed during the day.

How neat! I've raised frog tadpoles before, but not toads. And, we got ours with a kit and they had tadpole food. I believe you can buy tadpole food at the petstore, and I would guess it'd work for both kinds - you might check and see. Have fun and keep us posted!

May. 4, 2008 - Cool!

I know I'm late to this post, but how COOL!?
For the last two years GB and I have raised frogs from eggs, and it really is an enriching activity. It's hard to let them go, though. GB would have wanted to keep them all.
I do have one tip. You don't really need to go to all that trouble with the lettuce, you can just use regular old flake fish food. You know the kind that you just pinch out a bit. Ours really loved it, and they grew fast. If you overfeed, though, your water will get cloudy. The hardest transition is when they go from the fish food to the crickets. Some will never eat the crickets and the stronger tadpole/froglets will eat THEM. That's kind of sad too......... but in a strange way, fascinating.
Have fun guys!

Charlotte Mason Quotable
"It would be well if we all persons in authority, parents and all who act for parents, could make up our minds that there is no sort of knowledge to be got in these early years so valuable to children as that which they get for themselves of the world they live in. Let them once get touch with Nature, and a habit is formed which will be a source of delight through life. We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 61
