Hairy Woodpecker

Posted in Birding

After much perserverance I finally captured this handsome fellow on camera!  This is the Hairy Woodpecker which at first glance looks very similar to the Downy Woodpecker; only the Hairy is about 2" bigger and his beak is much longer.  Downy's are so small sometimes I practically miss them sitting on my suet feeder.  The Hairy Woodpecker, I can't miss!

The picture isn't the best, but I was so happy to get it!  He's a very nervous acting bird that only stays at the feeder for seconds and then at the first sight of movement is outta there!  That's another big difference between him and the Downy, the Downy seems that they'd practically land on you, they're so friendly!

What a great pic! And thank you for those links you included. I love your birdfeeder. Did you make it or buy it? I've not seen one like that before. Holly

Beautiful bird! I just looked in our field guide - wow, they are extremely similar in appearance!

We haven't seen the pileated woodpeckers for a while, but I saw one this week when I was watering the garden. Our new friend, the red-bellied woodpecker, is coming to our feeder every few days. The boys often sit camped out in front of the windows just waiting to see who will show up and then usually scare whichever bird it happens to be away with their excited shrieks. LOL

What a beauty!!! I'd love to see something like that! We tried feeders, but we have flocks and flocks of HORRID cow birds and they hoard. They are terrible. Husband made me take the feeders down to get them gone! Bummer!

Blessings!

wow thanks for the comparrison info on the Downys & Hairys. I think perhaps the one we saw was a Hairy. I dont recall seeing it in my guide, I'd better double check on that. They are sooooo very similar indeed!!! Great job showing both --- thats excellent info for us!!!

Being that we live in a newer subdivision there isnt a lot of wildlfe/nature going on. Slowly the birds are finding their way here, but really there isnt a lot to 'study.' Well I'm sure there is, but its difficult to locate. We did however draw the leaf buds and the new leaf sprouts that are appearing on our trees this week. I've never paid that much attention to it, but it's really neat. We've been talking about getting a WildFlower book, I think that would help give us more to study -- as flowers grow everywhere!!

Thanks for keeping the ideas flowing. When I get into a slump I know I can come your way to help dig out!!

I often get Downy Woodpeckers at my feeders. When we school out on the deck we can sometimes hear a woodpecker nearby. I love God's creation!

Nature Notes

The artic chill is on! Temps haven't been out of the 30's for days. Brrrr! The woods in back have been cracking as if moaning with pain from the cold. But already, the beauty of winter is emerging as well: birds have been overly plentiful at the feeders, the sky is so clear the stars are like shining beacons in the night, the morning dew is frozen into millions of crystals on the grass that reflect the rising sun, and now that we have a clear view into the woods again we are daily seeing wild turkeys and deer passing by.

Close encounters of the "chipmunk" kind! Hannah was out on the patio watching the birds at the feeders and in a split second a little chipmunk ran around the corner obviously unaware of her presence. That was until he came face to toes with her in a standoff! Then, cheeks puffed full of bird seed, he proceeded to zip like lightning right between her legs and dashed into safety. Hannah exclaimed, "Mom, I can't breathe, that was so cool!"

Our first snowfall!! The kids and I couldn't wait to wrap up warm and get outside for nature time. The flakes were so big and wet AND yummy! We had such fun dancing and spinning around in our winter wonderland!

Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

Quotable
"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
