Take a Wildflower Walk

Posted in Wildflowers

What have I loved most about our wildflower walks over the last several weeks?  This...

Getting out together in the fresh air, going on a hunt for something new, admiring something old, finding unexpected things, hearing my children shrill with excitement, and most of all forming bonds and memories for a lifetime....this is what I have loved best about our wildflower walks.

And did I mention learning to work out our disagreements?  Today before embarking upon our walk and right before snapping the above photo, my children were in a tug-o-war over who gets to carry the prized bucket.  We worked it out, and you see who won the admirable position of Bucket Carrier.  Really, we had a plan, all take turns, it's elementary.

Would you join us on our walk?  Perhaps, we'll let you be the Bucket Carrier too :)

Our first discovery, along the edge of the woods, was the Virginia Creeper.  It vines along the ground or up trees as seen in this picture.  Evidently it has a beautiful bright red fall color, we'll be sure to come check that out then.

Next on our journey, we discovered another patch of the previously identified Yellow Wood Sorrel.  My Dad said that as a kid he used to sit in a patch of this and chew on the very sour stalks!

And right next to it, the kids immediately shouted out "Philadelphia Fleabane!"  I'm truly amazed every day at how much they are remembering.

Next, we have a little "wildflower lesson".  These next two I mixed up until recently.  This one is a Multiflora Rose.  Notice the heart-shaped petals and Yellow anthers and stamen?

Now, next on our walk, let's look at the Wild Blackberry.  Notice the whitish anthers, largely separated and rough oval-shaped petals?

Observe the next photo of Wild Blackberry and enlarge it...do you see our busy bee friend?

Photobucket

Next on our journey was our most exciting new discovery for today, a Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly, taking a sip from the mud.

Up the hill a bit we go, and we take time to help spread the Dandelion seeds around...

Gabby's turn to carry the bucket!

This is one of our most recently identified wildflowers, Yellow Hawkweed.

Hannah snapped a photo of a very nicely camouflaged grasshopper.

Yippee!  A new wildflower to identify!

Does anyone else see the immese beauty in clover?  And it smells pretty good too!

There are so many varieties of clover, including this Hop Clover.

And this one, which we just found today (not sure what kind yet), and we all agree that it smells so sweet, like cherry Kool-Aid!  And isn't it the most beautiful combination of pink and white?

And what better to wrap up a wildflower walk, than to have your sweet son pick you a beautiful bouquet?  Which fit very nicely into the paper mache spring vase Hannah made from the instructions at Hearts and Trees.

What a lovely walk! You do have delightful flowers growing in your area. One of the not so great things about living in a newly built area is there aren't many living things gorwing just yet.
And yes, I'd like to take a turn at holding the bucket, thanks!
:) Have a great weekend!

How fun. I love the vase... and the "KoolAid" flowers. And, I'm always amazed at how much my daughter remembers, too. I guess when you take the time to look it up and research it, you just remember things better!

My oldest daughter is doing a wildflower project for 4H to enter in our fall county fair. So we were back out in the pasture gathering flowers yesterday. We had a great time but discovered we were covered with ticks when we got home! Another great post! Blessings, Julie

May. 31, 2008 - Love Your Pictures

Posted by DelainaD
I'm really enjoying your blog. I love the fact that you take the time to post pictures. I'm a very visual learner and so seeing pictures helps me in a big way. Thanks for providing the names to all the flowers you come across, too. Now I have a name for those little yellow flowers I grew up sucking the almost lemony juice out of. As a matter of fact, I told my kids about them as we were pulling weeds from our beds the other day. Needless to say, I lost my helpers for a little while ;). God's nature is so beautiful and I'm learning to take more time to stop, pay attention, learn and enjoy.

I recently ordered Anna Comstock's Handbook of Nature Study because I've seen it on so many blogs recently (yours being one of them). I can't wait to sit down and thumb through it.

I feel that I need to take my children on more nature walks. I'm just starting to read through all of my Charlotte Mason books and I'm in prayer about what the Lord would have us do in our homeschool because I feel He is calling me in a different direction. If you have any helpful information or favorite books that you've read, would you mind sharing or doing a post on that? I know you've talked about how homeschooling was becoming almost a drudgery for y'all. That's what I feel it has been for us recently.

Thanks!

Wow! I am impressed with all the wildflowers that your children can identify. I think my children would both want to be the bucket carrier too. : )

Ok, one more post from me tonight and then I'll quit bugging you - HA! :) I looked in my Handbook of Nature Study a bit (we're still a bit new to it) and was wondering where you identify all your wildflowers? Do you have a separate book for those?

Oh and thank you for visiting my blog as well!

Hi DelaniaD!

Hang in there! Ask the Lord to open your eyes to your children's hearts, more the way He sees them, and you will begin seeing more clearly the path God would have you on. It sounds like you are doing the right thing by reading some books about Charlotte Mason and doing research. I will think further about your question and see if I can jot down some notes about it into a post, and possibly recommend some resources I've used. We're leaving on vacation so it wouldn't be posted until after we return.

Blessings, Melissa

Very nice walk. Sure, we'd love to go with you sometime. Just more people to argue over the bucket, though. :-)

How do you do school at a table in a schoolroom on such a gorgeous day? High of 80 degrees, low humidity, puffy white clouds, gentle breeze...outside we go!

  • The rains have yet again brought on two more new wildflowers - Tall Ironweed and Lance-Leaved Goldenrod, both found down by the creek.

Alex caught a Dog-Day Cicada thats wing had been damaged, we had lots of fun observing and learning about cicadas today.

Our friend and new pet, the American Toad, is still doing quite well, he has a big appetite!

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9
