Forest Fires Unit Study

Fire! The Renewal of a Forest

by Celia Godkin

Our new schoolyear is fast approaching!  Since forest fire season is here, for the first few weeks of school one of our focuses will be the study of forest fires.  Throughout planning this unit, I've been quite amazed at all I've learned.  The above book, Fire! The Renewal of a Forest, is a book that I stumbled upon quite by accident.  My son had picked it off the shelf at the library at the very last minute one day as we were leaving.  Before we had a chance to read it, he unexpectedly went into the hospital for two weeks.

The day after we got back home, he picked it up and asked me to read it to him as he was getting ready for bed that night.  By the time I was done with the last page, I was in tears!  The story is not only about forest fires, but also about the beneficial renewing process that comes as a result of the harsh fire.  This personally really hit home with me after going through such a trial in our lives.  After reading it, my son and I had one of the most wonderful talks about what had happened to him, and where was God when it happened.  This book is so beautifully written with rich engaging colorful illustrations.  This definitely qualified as a "living book" for me.  I couldn't wait to purchase it for ourselves.

Also that very night, while I was so inspired, I sat and wrote up some unit study ideas to use with the book.

If you would like to download these unit study ideas click Forest Fires Unit.  This is a Word file.

The unit looks super!

I'm busy planning for school, too. We've already been off two months, but none of us are ready to get going again! LOL I think we'll wait until the first of August - maybe most of the canning will be done by then, too. Wonder if I should count the hours and hours of canning as home economics?? :)

Melissa thanks so much for this helpful info. I want this book. I put the Yellowstone (short videos) link on my blog. I find that we are using my blog more and more for schoolwork because of people like you and these valuable links. Saves me time from having to hunt them down myself :-). Thanks again!

Great unit study...my boys would have loved this when they were younger. They have always been around wildfire since that is what their dad does for a living. :)

I will look to see if we have any fire stuff around the house and I will share it with you.

Thanks, Melissa, for such a thorough study. We'll be traveling soon to my home state which is literally ablaze right now. We'll probably look into this study when we return as I'm sure we'll see evidence of the beneficial destruction. See you in a few days - praying for you!

I want to search my library system for this. I think it would be a great book to read with my boys, especially after our wildfires in May. Reading this entry made me realize that I have already become accustomed to the ravaged landscape that was left all around us. Burned and brown is the reality and already I've forgotten what everything looked like before. We have the process of renewal to observe for years to come.

The artic chill is on! Temps haven't been out of the 30's for days. Brrrr! The woods in back have been cracking as if moaning with pain from the cold. But already, the beauty of winter is emerging as well: birds have been overly plentiful at the feeders, the sky is so clear the stars are like shining beacons in the night, the morning dew is frozen into millions of crystals on the grass that reflect the rising sun, and now that we have a clear view into the woods again we are daily seeing wild turkeys and deer passing by.

Close encounters of the "chipmunk" kind! Hannah was out on the patio watching the birds at the feeders and in a split second a little chipmunk ran around the corner obviously unaware of her presence. That was until he came face to toes with her in a standoff! Then, cheeks puffed full of bird seed, he proceeded to zip like lightning right between her legs and dashed into safety. Hannah exclaimed, "Mom, I can't breathe, that was so cool!"

Our first snowfall!! The kids and I couldn't wait to wrap up warm and get outside for nature time. The flakes were so big and wet AND yummy! We had such fun dancing and spinning around in our winter wonderland!

Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
