The Secret Garden

Posted in Language Arts

We just finished up on our first read-aloud chapter book of the schoolyear, The Secret Garden!  This book was right up our alley...all about receiving the healing power from getting out in the fresh air and enjoying nature.  I had never read the book before, we ALL enjoyed it immensely.  Now, we are looking forward to renting the movie to watch.

THANKS so much for all the comments and recommendations on which movie to choose!!  Unfortunately our library only has the most recent version, which is definitely NOT the one I want to have!  So I'm going to pursue neighboring county libraries to see if they have the others.  I love everything I've seen that Hallmark Hall of Fame has done, and I'd love to see the older version as well, so I'm going to try and find both.  If libraries don't have them, I'll turn to Blockbuster Online and just have to wait for them to come in!!  THANKS AGAIN!

You'll have to tell us which version of the movie you like. Is there one that is true to the book, do you know? I am pretty sure my Grace would love the book. We've checked out the condensed version from our library too many times to count.

I can remember reading this when I was young and really loving it. My oldest girl is only 6 though, so I'm thinking I should wait a couple of years.

I have seen the newer version of the movie and it is very good (though it's been too long for me to remember how close to the book it is). You may want to be warned that there is one scene where the children are chanting around a fire trying to 'lure' the boy's father back home. I don't remember if the book dealt with this type of spiritual content or not, but the movie suggests that it works and the father comes home. Just thought you might want to be prepared for that. :-)

Be very, very careful which version you get! The 1993 version has nudity (though G rated) and really plays up a witchcraft element. They divert way too much from the book, including changing the tragedy in India to an earthquake and making Mary & Colin's mother's identical twins (and thus a "mystical" bond). My husband and I were shocked and appalled by it. Not good.

A much better version is the Hallmark Hall of Fame (Can't remember the year) or better yet...the 1949 (now colorized) version with Margaret O'Brien! I actually found it at our library!

We're studying the book now for our literature and the kids are really enjoying it so far. I've read it many times! Glad you all enjoyed it!

We listened to the story on CD last school year and thoroughly enjoyed it! However, when we watched the movie we were very disappointed because it did like so many movies do...wandered away from the original story. There were similarities, but far fewer than we hoped for. FYI- we watched the version that Boone County Libraries have.

We read it last spring and it enjoyed it so much! I even cried in a couple of places. Our library has the movie so we watched it afterward as a family night. Now we are reading My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George and the children are enjoying it too. Don't you just love how excited they get when you read from a good book! "Just one more chapter...please."

Oh, we loved The Secret Garden!! I read it as a girl. There are so many good lessons in it!
One caution about the movie, I don't know which version you'll rent , but one of the newest ones shows the children chanting around a fire a night-kind of eerie, as if that's what brought the father back.
Focus on the Family has made a radio drama of it as well.

It's me again, I might be a little slow, but
I just realized the significance of the title of your blog.
I just discovered that verse is Psalms a little while ago and it had an impact on me, how I need to 'build my nest at the altar'.
Great title!!

We read this last year, and I was thinking, "WHY have I never read this incredible book?" It's one of those classics that I never read as a child. Thank Goodness we get a second chance with our kids. :-)

We read The Secret Garden last year, too. It was my first time and we both really enjoyed it.

Besides a movie version, we also really enjoy Focus on the Family's audio version. It isn't a reading of the book, but an "acting out." It's great!

Welcome to our blog home! My name is Melissa and I am a homeschool mom of three beautiful blessings ages 11, 9, and 2; and blessed wife to my husband for 15 years. Nature Notes

The artic chill is on! Temps haven't been out of the 30's for days. Brrrr! The woods in back have been cracking as if moaning with pain from the cold. But already, the beauty of winter is emerging as well: birds have been overly plentiful at the feeders, the sky is so clear the stars are like shining beacons in the night, the morning dew is frozen into millions of crystals on the grass that reflect the rising sun, and now that we have a clear view into the woods again we are daily seeing wild turkeys and deer passing by.

Close encounters of the "chipmunk" kind! Hannah was out on the patio watching the birds at the feeders and in a split second a little chipmunk ran around the corner obviously unaware of her presence. That was until he came face to toes with her in a standoff! Then, cheeks puffed full of bird seed, he proceeded to zip like lightning right between her legs and dashed into safety. Hannah exclaimed, "Mom, I can't breathe, that was so cool!"

Our first snowfall!! The kids and I couldn't wait to wrap up warm and get outside for nature time. The flakes were so big and wet AND yummy! We had such fun dancing and spinning around in our winter wonderland!

Scripture Notes

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. ~ Romans 1:20

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

Quotable
"Years hence, when the children are old enough to understand that science itself is in a sense sacred and demands some sacrifices, all the 'common information' they have been gathering until then, and the habits of observation they have acquired, will form a capital groundwork for a scientific education. In the mean- time, let them consider the lilies of the field and the fowls of the air." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 63
