One day a week this school year we will be focusing on poetry. Today was that day! I thought I'd give you a glimpse into what that's been looking like for us. On these days the kids not only try their own hand at writing their own poetry but we also pick a poem to study.

I'm having at least one of the kids pick a poem to read from our poetry books that we have available. Today for instance Hannah picked a poem from the Favorite Poems Old and New book titled Barefoot Days by Rachel Field. This was such a delightful poem! And completely fitting for these extra warm mornings in late summer.

Barefoot Days

In the morning, very early,

That's the time I love to go

Barefoot where the fern grows curly

And grass is cool between each toe,

On a summer morning-O!

On a summer morning!

That is when the birds go by

Up the sunny slopes of air,

And each rose has a butterfly

or a golden bee to wear';

And I am glad in every toe-

Such a summer morning-O!

Such a summer morning!

After reading through the poem we had a discussion about what each line meant, and took a moment to try and visualize the scene in our minds and expressed how it made us feel. Our favorite line was "Barefoot where the fern grows curly and grass is cool between each toe."  We discussed how this must mean it is set near a woods because of the fern.

After discussing it for just a few minutes and visualizing the scene in our minds we drew what we envisioned down on paper.

Here are the main books we use for poetry. However we also like to check out new ones from the library too!
