Week-at-a-Glance

This past week has been super busy...thus the lack of blogging. So here is my attempt to catch you up with a "little" of what's been going on.

Last Friday (9/4) we took a field trip to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati with students from our co-op. This went along with the Civil War class that the kids are in at co-op.

After that, friends were in visiting all Labor Day weekend. Our friends have a total of eight children, here are their two oldest girls with Hannah.  These girls are like sisters, they've grown up together.

On the schoolfront, we finished up studying Paul Cezanne and Frederic Chopin by painting outside and listening to a CD of Chopin's compositions.

We've started our studies on Fruits and Nuts. You can check out my post on that at Fun with Fruits and Nuts over at Shining Dawn Books.

On the nature front, lots has been going on. It's the beginning of Autumn for sure. There's a crispness in the morning air, and the clear blue skies signify very low humidity. It's been so beautiful!

With the onset of cooler temps seems the frogs have gotten a lot slower moving because at one time last week Alex had seven frogs in his aquarium! I'm encouraging him to enjoy them, for it won't be long before they suddenly disappear. The boy seriously loves frogs!

We've immensely enjoyed the Corn Moon. This is the best shot my camera would give me.

And oh how I've enjoyed the cool and foggy sunrises.

And the birds have already been flying overhead in massive migrating flocks...yes indeed, Autumn is on it's way.

So, thus why I've been out frequently trying to get this photograph of the Monarch that frequents in the field next door...I know that they'll be gone soon too. This one blessed me today by holding as still as could be while I photographed away! I do believe he was seriously enjoying the nectar in the Red Clover.

And last, but not least, I've still been busy with my wildflower photography. Here is just one of the many I've been capturing lately. There are many varieties of Thistle blooming right now, this one is the Canada Thistle.

Oh, and also our home school co-op officially started back up this past Friday, yippee! Our first day was a huge success!

So what's been going on in your neck of the woods?

Sep. 13, 2009 - Dictation

Posted by Anonymous
I was just searching about dictation and I came to your post about a year ago about Dictation (Pt. 1-2) and I found it very interesting and useful. As an update I am wondering if you are still enjoying dictation and have a recommendation. I am homeschooling my K and 3rd graders with an 1 and 2 year old underfoot. I need simplicity and the best solution for our future days. I notice that all of the things that have looked at are things you have used (Primary Language Lessons & Spelling Power, plus dictation and copywork). I realize you are using Intermediate LL, but same thing kind of. I like the idea of developing spelling lists that are tailored to my kids. Any help would be much appreciated. How funny that I was just looking at some nature websites and blogs thus stumbled onto yours. Our family is planning a trip this time next year and we are going to the Underground Railroad Museum in Cincy. Please send me information about it at harrisjje@hotmail.com We are homeschooling our 7 and 9 yr old girls and would love to know where to go in the area. We will have 2-3 days to see museums, etc. Rest of the time going to show my husband and girls were Mommy grew up. Thanks for any information! Christina in CA

We have collected monarch caterpillars every year and observed their metamorphosis. Last year we collected the eggs and were able to watch them go from eggs to butterflies!! Right now we have two chrysalis' in the kitchen getting ready to "hatch" in a few days! It is awesome to see God's design in these beautiful creatures!

Oh I just love the foggy sunrise photo! Early in the mornings as the sun is coming up the lake and ravine are obstructed from view because of the fog and it all looks so dreamy. The pasture is full of indian grass and big blue stem right now. Much of it is beginning to turn a golden color and it's gorgeous. I love fall!
So have you guys wrapped up your civil war unit? I think I mentioned that I started an art coop with some friends. Our first session was last week and I taught. In your coops do all the moms take turns teaching? That was what we had hoped for but we've found that many didn't want to but still wanted their children in the class. Did you encounter this and if you did what did you do about it? I was just wondering as I am new to all this "coop" stuff :-).
Hope your rest of the week is fantastic!
Blessings, Julie

Looks like you've been kept very busy, indeed. We are heading tomorrow up to Lake MIchigan to camp this one last time for the year. It's amazing how fast camping season has gone.
Blessings to you and yours,
Jenn

Charlotte Mason Quotable
"It would be well if we all persons in authority, parents and all who act for parents, could make up our minds that there is no sort of knowledge to be got in these early years so valuable to children as that which they get for themselves of the world they live in. Let them once get touch with Nature, and a habit is formed which will be a source of delight through life. We were all meant to be naturalists, each in his degree, and it is inexcusable to live in a world so full of the marvels of plant and animal life and to care for none of these things." --Charlotte Mason, Vol.1, p. 61
