Pray for Rahman

Posted in In the News

Please read this post by Christine Miller with an update concerning the Afghani man who is in jail due to his conversion from Islam to Christianity.  She links to a post by Michelle Malkin who in turn links to a post by LaShawn Barber which is worth reading.  I found a petition on Barber's blog to sign.  Most of all, we need to be praying for this man!

The Oprah Winfrey Show Discriminates Against Homeschoolers

Posted in In the News

You can read the article HERE.  I hope that homeschool highschoolers who want to will write an essay anyway and turn it in to demonstrate the quality of writing that homeschooled kids can produce.  It is ridiculous that when the omission of homeschoolers was pointed out to a rep. of the show, that the rep decided to continue to exclude this group of American highschoolers.  I guess the show thinks it is okay to pick and choose who to discriminate against.  Sad.

Update:  Other bloggers are saying that the Oprah show has a right to make the rules however they choose and that homeschoolers should not complain.  After all, some contests are open only to homeschoolers.  I guess the reason why I think that Oprah should include ALL students is that it is a nationally-publicized show and the show is claiming that the contest is open to all American high school students, when in reality it is not.  While I don't make it a habit to watch the show and don't agree with her philosophy of life, I still think that the contest and forum of expression should be open to all students as is claimed.

The End Does Not Justify the Means

Posted in In the News

Recently our family drove by a community park and noticed a makeshift memorial cross erected in memory of "Joey McBrun" with the dates 1999-2006 and a plea to slow down.  A mangled bike as well as flowers and stuffed animals lay around the cross.

We expressed our sorrow to each other that a young boy was apparently killed.  James went on the internet and did a search with the boy's name to find out what had happened, yet he did not find any information.  Later that week, in a local newspaper, we read that the police were completely baffled by the memorial and were asking for help in identifying the boy.  They had contacted the coroner who had no person by that name on record.  None of the local schools had any student enrolled by that name either.  I heard on a television news report as well, that there is no resident of our state with that last name.

We are suspicious that someone fabricated that memorial with the implication that a child was killed in order to manipulate drivers to slow down.  It is reasonable to want others to drive responsibly, but the method of achieving that appears to be dishonest.  The only other possibility that seems plausible is that the child was actually killed in another state, but once had connections in this community and therefore a memorial was put up here.

Mysterious...and weird.

My husband emailed me this heart-warming news story.   Can anyone explain why it is filed under the "family" category on the site?  Is it supposed to be an object lesson for children who eat like animals?
