Why I enjoy MFW Bible in ECC and K

(c)2008, mfwfriendDays like today's lesson are just one of the reasons I am really enjoying the Bible in ECC. This year, we read the Gospel of Matthew. Today's memory work included MT 5:14-15. My 4th grader didn't understand what that meant. I love being able to explain it to her. Turned out to be a great time to review Kindy kid's Bible words from early this year. Jesus is the light of the world.I am the Light of the World. and now..... you are the light of the world We took a candle, put it on a little piece of modeling clay. Then put it in a plate so it wouldn't fall over. We looked at it, Then put a bowl over the candle. There's no one on the outside who can see the light!!!! if it is hidden under a bowl!!! Then, we went into the bathroom and closed the door. I put the plate on the floor. It lit up the room somewhat but not everyone could really see much unless they were standing near the candle. But then, we raised the candle up high (on a stand) and it lit up the whole room so that everyone in our house could see it!!!!! Then my autistic Kindy kid began to hold the plate (with supervision) and she remembered her K lessons. With no human prompting, she told us Jesus is the light of the World. sun light. moon light. I am the light of the world. and we all sang This little light of mine. My older girls (and me too) quickly memorized the verse (Mt. 5:15) because of the order we did our quick hands on stuff. I love how God teaches us so much when we involve the whole family in homeschool. I love the simple, hands on teaching style that I've learned in MFW. Most of that was not in the manual to do with the candle --- but from doing hands on in Adventures and Kindy --- I was ready to repeat and adapt.
