Artifacts in the evening

It was after nine at night, a still beautiful evening in Southeast Alaska.  A whole archeological team set out to discover if they could find any remains of a possible lost civilization.  Who would do such a thing at such a time of day?  Well, the staff children at Echo Ranch Bible Camp, several parents, and I would!

We gathered together and reviewed what we as archeologists do and how the archeological dig should proceed.  We took a picture of our team and then we began the adventure.  When we were all on-site, we used ropes to make a grid on the ground where we would search.  The team split up into partners and the digging commenced.

It wasn't long before artifacts were found.  Amazingly many artifacts were found! In fact, an hour later we were still looking for one last artifact that should have been found.  I finally called off the search for the night but the other "archeologists" remain determined that they will find it tomorrow.

So, perhaps you are wondering why we did this at nine in the evening. It was supposed to be in the afternoon but I had to go to town today.  Then it was to be after supper but I found out last night that we had a staff meeting after supper.  In the end, it was a blessing because the sunset was particularly beautiful tonight and we all were able to enjoy it.  We may be a little tired tomorrow but I think it was worth it.

The whole "archeological" team holding some artifacts they found.

Note: I cannot take credit for the archeological dig idea.  My family is beginning to use The Story of the World this year and the volume 1 activity guide suggests this activity for the introductory lesson.

I use SOTW also and remember doing this activity. The boys loved it. I have a great friend who is a pastor in Alaska. She lives on the Kenai peninsula. I can't rememeber the name of the place this early in the morning. Have a great day.
