We were walking outside and there on the ground was a dead bug. A big, dead bug...really big. It was a cicada. I am not sure I have ever seen one like this before. I remember as a kid the 17-year variety coming out of the ground and literally covering the ground of our entire city. Ok, I didn't survey the ground of the entire city but instead of raking leaves we could have raked dead bug carcasses and filled garbage bags with them. They were noisy, too.
Anyway, that isn't the point. Today I saw an incredibly beautiful insect. The wings were transparent. The body had varied green and brown markings on it. I picked it up as we walked towards the building that was our destination for a meeting. I felt a little funny carrying a dead bug inside so I carefully placed it outside the door. As soon as we left the building I checked on my treasure and was joyous that the critter was still there. Gently I picked it up and held it so the wind would not blow it away but so that I would not injure any part of it. With the excitement of givng a gift on Christmas morning, I showed my prize to the kids. We discussed options of how we could get it back to Alaska in good condition.
It wasn't that long ago that any bug out there did not rate more than a toe nudge from me. Here is a testimony of how homeschooling has changed me! The excitement my kids have for God's creation has infected me! Perhaps it is better said, here is a testimony of how God has changed me. It is an insignificant issue, but then again I now have yet another way to praise God. That is never insignificant. |
