Interesting subjects
Well, some very interesting things happened in the world this week. Fidel Castro resigned as the President of Cuba. The price of a barrel of oil went over $100.00. Kosovo declared its independence. Let us not forget President's Day. Wow! What a week for homeschooling topics! When the World Trade Center was destroyed my daughter was an infant. Knowing how history has a way of re-writing events I thought it was a good idea to get the paper in order to show her the truth when I felt like she was mature enough to handle it. Our world changed that day. I think the events of this week, while not as personally significant, will have a substantial impact in the not to distant future. There is, of course, the ongoing civics lesson as seen in the Presidential election that is right around the corner. Even though she is young, I try to discuss topics like these so that she has a full understanding of things that shape her world. |

Opportunities have abounded
We have had several opportunities over this holiday season to do things like make items for a local nursing home and to share the joy for the holidays with others. It has been a wonderful learning experience for our little girl. The beauty of it is that she has already learned that it is not in the gift but instead in the giving. She experiences the holidays on a more mature level and loves seeing others open their gifts while waiting to open her own. For Christmas, she would not open any gifts until I opened mine which was such a pleasure to see. I hope all of you have had an equally gratifying holiday season. |

Brand new here!
Tonight is my first night on here. Seems like the people here have very exciting lives and incredible stories of homeschooling their children. We are definitely in the eclectic category but that is more about finding something that works well for us as opposed to a precise method of "teaching". We use quite a variety of resources and have recently looked into notebooking. My dd hates to write so I'm thinking that notebooking is not the way to go with her just yet. She is in the 3rd grade. We are using some actual "school books" this year. We are also doing unit studies that I have created based on her love of animals. Naturally we use the internet A LOT. Well, that's about it. |
