Cheap Science Equipment
|
Before you buy expensive science equipment, think outside the box and look around the house for substitutes. Last year we were doing geology labs and an upcoming experiment called for a ring stand, an alcohol burner, and three watch glasses. I looked these items up in a science supply catalog and it was going to cost $30 - $50 just for one experiment! I asked friends, but to no avail. Then one afternoon as I was lighting the candles on the coffee table, I found my needed science equipment: my wrought iron tea light candle holder (purchased for $1 at a garage sale). It was open and obviously the glass was fire resistant. So, we took the candles out, but them in egg cups and placed them under the glass candle holders. Voila! One ring-stand, four watch glasses and a flame source! See results below or Click here to see a larger version mijubrifarms_Ring_Stand__burner .

I have since found these type of candle holders at the thrift store in various shapes and sized for under $10.

Looks like you uploaded your picture onto your blogger account and you have the URL. What you need to do is in your template, click on the picture square and a box should pop up that says insert URL. THAT'S where you paste the link and then the picture will show up. You may need to use the arrows in the corners to make it smaller or something, but you can't drag the whole picture around so make sure that you are at the point where you want the picture inserted when you hit that button.
Nifty idea. Now... if you'll just come up with a cheap microscope!!!
