Using 4H for your Home School

I just love how much "school" my 15yo daughter gets done just by living her life.  She is very active in 4H and this year at least 1/2 of her credits will com from her involvement. Here's some of what she's doing and getting credit for.

Student Government (Social Studies): This year she holds two office (Historian and Reporter) and that means she has many new things to learn. she is now part of the Executive Committe and that means extra meetings and responsibilities. This committee does all the plannig and discussing upcoming projects, activies, budgets, etc. In addition, she is acting Club Secretary (the old one moved) and now has to take and record the meeting minutes. She also has to complete record books for all offices as well as pass a test on Parlimentary Procedures.

Yearbook Staff: (Communications/English) Club Historian duties entail putting together a scrapbook for the club, which will be judged at the county fair. Certain criteria pertain.  She must design a theme, type/write all stories, and paste in pictures.  This also makes her the club photographer so she has to be able to pass a test on the basics of taking a good picture and photo journalism.  She's enrolled in the Photography project as well - so maybe some science as we learn about light, vision, color and composition, etc.

Journalism (English): She's getting plenty of practice as Reporter.  She has to submit monthly articles for the county newsletter, and submits them to local/neighboorhood papers.  Her responsibilities also include all Public Relations. She is having to learn what a Media Package is and how to put one together.  She's designed a Club letterhead and will be using it to submit press releases and other written communications.  As acting Secretary, she typed up the rough of her first set of minutes today (in proper outline format) and I must say, they're pretty good. She needs to edit some spelling and rewrite some paragraphs.

Home Economics: This will be her 3rd year in Creative Sewing. Last years Backpack took Reserve Grand Champ at county and 3rd place at State. This year she plans on sewing a renaissance-type costume.  For Cooking/Nutrition she will begin work on the Creative Cooks competition next month. This is a very extensive competion which entails planning and preparing a menu around a theme and interviewing before judges on presentation, nutrition and safety knowledge, handling, taste, etc.

I can't say enough about 4H.  The manuals for all the projects are excellent and you don't have to live in country and have animals to participate. It's healthy competition, and awards are based on merit.  Check out 4H at your local County Extension Office.

Here she is with that award winning backpack.

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for posting on my poll. Please let your friends know about this, the more polls received the better the results.

I agree 4-H is great! My girls are involved in two different clubs but 5 different projects. That's a lovely picture of your daughter and that is a great backpack!

I came across your site via the Homeschool 4H Yahoo group. I was so tickled by your blog that I am going to send the link to some friends. I still have a 4H group (all homeschoolers) and themoms are always looking for encouragement.

Thanks again!

Hi there, after a google search I came across your site and will definitely be back. I have a few girls who I would like to try out 4-H, but aren't into pets per se. How encouraging to know there might be something else just right. THanks!
