You can save a lot of money by learning how to make your own organic bar soap. Organic bar soap naturally costs more than conventional soap because more care is taken with the organic ingredients. Hence, organic ingredients generally cost more. The only difference between making your own handmade soap and organic bar soap is finding your organic ingredients.
What benefits are there to making organic soap?
First, it is better for your health. You know that there were no nasty chemicals applied to any of the ingredients, so they do not end up in your soap.
Second, you are supporting the efforts of those individuals who grow and harvest organic materials.
Third, it is better for the environment.

I am a new soaper with a silly question. It is my understanding that all soap making requires lye. If that is the case...how can it be considered organic even if all other items are organic? Isn't the lye a chemical...a harsh one at that? Or is there a way to make cold process soap without lye?
This is a good question. I am going to talk about this in two parts. First, the product. Soap as a product has no lye in it. When the lye saponifies with the oils, there is no trace of any lye in the soap at all. Most soap makers using a good recipe will superfat the soap a little so that there is more oil than the lye and this insures a nice mild soap. A soap with free lye redicals still present is very harsh and will dry out or burn your skin.
Secondly, when you look at individual ingredients that make up the lye, you need to look at what the definition of organic is. Here is a link about organic http://www.organic.org/home/faq It is only one in a google search, there are many other webpages. Organic in this sense is related to how a product is raised/produced. While it is true that lye is caustic, it is a naturally occurring substance made up of sodium, oxygen and hydrogen. That's about as organic as you can get.
The good news however is that this sodium hydroxide can combine with oils and make a beautiful cleansing soap that is not harsh on the skin. So you can claim your soap is organic if the oils you use in your soap are raised organically, and the milk (if you use milk) is organic. You must be careful is labelling soap as organic as the first link mentions. If your soap isn't 100% organic, there are other labels you can use.
