• Nov. 2, 2009 - 16 to 4?!

Posted By The Heart of the Home in My ramblings

Ah....DS's newfound love is playing Uno.  We play and play and play.  It has been incentive for him to get chores completed quickly and get a quick game in before we start school!  *grin*  We have started a challenge that really began when we sat down one rainy day last week to play and I said, "Hey, best two out of three.  Waddaya say?"  It has turned into DS 16 games to my 4.  In the name of all things sane and real how can my son be beating the socks off of me in Uno of all things?!?!?

So the saga continues.  I am working on coming back from behind in a stealth attack he'll never see coming.....I think.

Peppermint Oil by Beeyoutiful

You can read all about the benefits of Beeyoutiful's Peppermint Oil by clicking on the link above.  It's wonderful, has many therapeutic uses and comes from a top-notch company!

So, I've been thinking about what to have you do to enter this week's contest.  After the rain yesterday Baby Girl and I went outside to breathe some fresh air.  I love taking pictures after it rains.

Isn't the rain beautiful dripping off leaves?

And our mums...... yum.

Or do you prefer the wet driveway and leaves?

Or Baby Girl's pink soccer ball left in the yard........

Or just the fallen leaves in the freshly growing grass?

I know that there are a million things wrong with this picture when it comes to "the thirds" thing and all that, but I love it in so many ways.

Wet buds?

Hidden flowers?

Baby girl held this one for me......

And then a yellow jacket came for a sniff and left since we were there.......
Cool, huh?

Again, things right in the middle but I love this!!!

Mushrooms growing underneath the bushes....

Or the kids doing silly things like smelling leaves........?

Baby girl jumping in the leaves......

And then trying to scare the kitten.

Yum, wet flowers!

Leaves turning and blue sky after a very rainy day.....

And why are there feathers in the watering can???

What is your favorite part about fall?
Football?
Campfires?
Leaves?
Cool weather?

Just leave a comment and tell me what your favorite part about fall is...........
And remember to let me know how to get in touch with you!
Times up on Wednesday so comment away!

Yep- I've got it but have NO idea of what I'm doing with it.  All I can do is run some of Pioneer Woman's Actions and then even tweaking that seems daunting.
But here's one of Sparky.....
Not sure that I like it....
Or even what I did.

• Oct. 29, 2009 - The new addition

Posted By Julie in Our Family, Our Lives
Our family, like most homeschool families, has had an array of animals one might call pets.  We've had
  • a salamander
  • about 10 cats at one time or another
  • a dog
  • raised a baby robin
  • all sorts of spiders
  • one of those bright red shiny furry ant/wasp things
  • turtles
  • a frog here and there
  • fish
  • mice
  • and even considered a horse once
It has taken me a long time to weed our cats down to just 2----Fred (the 18 pound monstrosity) and Cruiser (the neighbors stray cat that somehow became ours).  Fred and Cruiser happily co exist with Sparky, our dog, who by the way weighs 1/2 of what Fred does.

So you can imagine my surprise when three weeks ago my husband and 2 boys come home from football practice with a stray cat that they found on the football field.  An 8 week old, flea infested, sweet little tabby kitten.  The fact that my husband let her in his truck at all is a miracle to me.  He's not a big cat fan.  When we married he inherited my cat with me.  Since that time, 13 years ago, I think we've had about 10 cats.

So here is our newest addition.....Raider (an appropriate name for a girl cat found on The Raider's football field).  Don't you think??

Sweet and asleep last night after playing outside and climbing trees all day....

And just for comparison.....a photo beside Fred who was none too happy about being dragged out from under the bed where he was fast asleep for a photo-op.

At the last weigh in Fred was close to 18 pounds and Raider was 2.2 lbs.

Gray tabbies must really like us, huh?

• Oct. 28, 2009 - OK we have a WEINER!!!

Posted By Julie in Just stuff
Tiffany over at A Moment Cherished won the Tea Tree Oil from BEEYOUtiful. And she is a brand new reader!  Congratulations!!

Watch for next week's give away!  Peppermint Oil!
Here's Beeyoutiful's advice on their peppermint oil:

Cool and invigorating health for your mind, skin, tummy, and lungs. A plant once native only to the Mediterranean, peppermint is now cultivated all over the world. The oil—distilled from the whole peppermint plant just before flowering—contains many therapeutic chemical components, most notably menthol which contributes its tingling fragrance and distinctive taste.

The restorative powers of peppermint oil have been appreciated for centuries. It has even been discovered in an Egyptian tomb dating from 1000 BC. This minty marvel contributes to complete health in a remarkable variety of ways.

Certain components of peppermint oil, when introduced to your body through scent, trigger your brain’s limbic function to “wake up” your mind. The limbic system—often called the “emotional brain”—regulates emotion, behavior, and long-term memory and is closely connected with the olfactory structures in your nose.

If you are working on a demanding project, a drop of peppermint oil on a tissue or dispersed in a diffuser or vaporizer where you’re working will stimulate mental agility and improve your focus. For even better results, you might want to sip ice water mixed with a drop of peppermint oil at the same time. This treatment also can moderate depression and the accompanying feeling of apathy.

If a traumatic event has put you or a loved one into a mental state of shock or nervous stress, peppermint oil will help them recover.

Dizziness or feeling faint will also be helped by PO. Try both inhaling the vapors from peppermint oil and rubbing the diluted oil on your temples for relief from headaches—even migraines.

Cool Down Irritated, Itchy Skin

Dilute a drop of peppermint oil with a carrier such as olive or coconut oil and rub it onto irritated, itchy, or inflamed skin for healing and relief of dermatitis, acne, ringworm, scabies, and pruritus (a non-specific itchy feeling).

Cool your sunburn and relieve subsequent itchiness with peppermint oil. You can mix a drop in a carrier oil and apply it directly to the skin. Or you can add the mixture to a spray bottle of water to spritz painful, itchy skin (but avoid spraying it in your eyes!).

Another comforting way to use peppermint for skin irritations is to add several drops to your bath. A peppermint oil bath is a good reliever of mental distress, too. And to supercharge your soothing soak, add few drops of Beeyoutiful Lavender Oil.

Ease Digestive Upset

There’s a reason many fill-your-plate restaurants bring a peppermint candy with your dinner check. Peppermint stimulates the gall bladder and bile secretion, helping your digestive system work smoothly.

Don’t pop an antacid when your tummy feels nauseous, gassy, or crampy! Instead, drink a drop or two of peppermint oil in water (or juice, if your digestion and appetite are up for it). It won’t hurt to repeat this process once every hour or two several times if necessary.

If you suffer from spastic colon or irritable bowel syndrome, try drinking peppermint oil in water for relief. Also, dilute a drop in carrier oil and rub it straight onto your tummy. It will provide extra comfort as it soaks through the skin and into your bloodstream.

Sooth Your All-Over Aches

Peppermint oil acts as a pain killer and muscle relaxer that has no undesirable side effects. Put a drop straight on a toothache or on painful gums where wisdom teeth are trying to break through. Massage the diluted oil onto aching feet, arthritic joints, and strained muscles.

Another useful pain relief application is to rub diluted peppermint oil onto the pelvic area for relief from menstrual cramps. The oil is also useful to stabilize irregular periods and to stimulate menstruation in cases of amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).

Breathe Easier

The high menthol content of pure peppermint oil makes it helpful with respiratory disorders as an expectorant and decongestant. Dry coughs, sinus congestion, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and even tuberculosis and cholera are improved when the sufferer inhales the aroma.

The very best way to get peppermint into your respiratory system quickly is through steam inhalation. Add two drops of oil to 6 to 8 cups of boiling water in a bowl placed on a stable surface. Keeping your eyes closed, cover your head and the bowl with a terry towel as you lean over and inhale the fresh vapors. If you get too hot or start feeling like you need some air, take a break. A few minutes of this therapy will jumpstart your lungs.

Keep up the aromatherapy by running your peppermint through an essential oil diffuser, or put a few drops in a vaporizer. In addition, dilute a drop of PO with carrier oil and rub it into your chest, neck (especially the lymph gland area), back, and even the bottoms of your feet. Do this regularly, and you should notice significant improvement in your lungs and sinuses.

Your friends and family will breathe easier, too, if you use Beeyoutiful Peppermint Oil as a mouthwash. Gargle and swish with one drop in a cup of water and swallow. This reduces mouth and gum infections  and zaps bad breath.

• Oct. 23, 2009 - A contest!!

Posted By Julie in Just stuff
Some of you have heard me talk about the wonderful folks at BeeYoutiful.  They have a wonderful catalog packed full of helpful home remedies.  Go on and click over there and get them to send you one!

This week I'm having a contest to give away one of their wonderful Tea Tree Oils!

This taken directly from their website:
Tea Tree Oil. This all-purpose essential oil can replace most of your medicines—and most of your household cleaning supplies. Beeyoutiful’s is 100% pure, pharmaceutical grade tea tree oil. It provides generous amounts of terpinen, the active ingredient responsible for the oil’s astounding anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal abilities not usually found in lesser brands.
Use tea tree oil instead of first aid spray and anti-bacterial ointments for cuts, scrapes, infections, irritated hair follicles, blisters, boils, and even acne. It’s safe for use on broken skin and can be applied without diluting. A drop or two is all it takes. You can also combine tea tree oil with Vitamin E oil or aloe vera gel to soothe minor burns and sunburn. And regular application will dissolve both plantar and seed warts safely. (Please don’t use toxic, over-the-counter wart removal medications!)
Skin conditions like eczema, seborrhea, and psoriasis are soothed when tea tree oil is mixed with aloe gel or added to a warm, sea salt bath. Minimize infection, reduce scarring, and speed healing from chicken pox and shingles by adding tea tree oil and a cup of dry oatmeal to a warm bath.
Tea tree oil massaged into the scalp relieves both dry and oily hair problems, plus dandruff. You’ll have no more worries about toxic head lice potions since tea tree oil eradicates lice, too!
Skip the expensive ******l yeast infection medicine you usually don’t realize you need until late at night. Just soak a tampon in olive oil or another safe lubricant, add a few drops of tea tree oil, and insert. Repeat for a few days. Sitz baths tinged with tea tree oil can also relieve the related itching and pain. Other fungal infections like jock itch, athlete’s foot, ringworm, and nail fungus respond to regular tea tree oil application as well.
Because tea tree oil acts as an expectorant and is beneficial to the respiratory tract, use it instead of cough syrups and cold medicines. Mix with olive oil and spread on your patient’s chest and throat. Make a steam inhalation treatment by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a bowl of boiling water, or diffuse the oil in a vaporizer or aroma lamp to open ailing air passages and disinfect the sickroom. Soothe an earache and clear up the infection by mixing a drop of TTO with a bit of warm olive oil. Insert this mixture into the ear and plug with a bit of cotton. Add a hot water bottle or heating pad, and relief will be quick.
Cold sores, mouth ulcers, and toothaches can all be helped by regular application of tea tree oil. Just don’t swallow the saliva right after application. Disinfect your toothbrush every week with a drop or two, then rinse well. If your family keeps passing around strep throat or a cold, this is very important!
Nature lovers love tea tree oil because it makes a great flea, tick, and mosquito repellant and will disinfect and reduce swelling if you’re bitten or stung. Mixed with baking soda, it makes an inexpensive home remedy for poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac itching.

And this is my FAVORITE CLEANING Product Recipe
Replace your toxic household cleaners with a spray bottle of 12 oz. warm water, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of borax, plus a few drops of tea tree oil for a safe, refreshing disinfectant cleaner. Add a drop to your dishwasher’s soap dispenser and to your garbage disposal to freshen them up. Add to your laundry to disinfect while you clean.

What do you have to do to enter the contest???
Just leave a comment here and tell me your FAVORITE bible verse and why it means so much to you.
The winner will be chose at random next Wednesday October 28th!
Good Luck everyone!!!

• Oct. 21, 2009 - Field Trip Day

Posted By Julie in Homeschooling
The morning began cloudy and rainy.....well drizzling rain.  A day that was made for a late start to homeschooling and a deeper snuggle in the bed.  But it was not to be....

It was field trip day and we were to be there at 9:15am.

Sometimes I wonder why I do things to myself.

Tap, tap!  Do you?

But my chilly pessimistic attitude began to change as caffeine kicked in and I was able to drag the four kids out of the bed by their hair.

Just kidding there guys.

Rocket Man decided to go with us.  I love it when he goes on field trips with us but sometimes He and field trips don't mix well.  The unspoken "Something will always go wrong"  bypasses him.  It's unspoken between homeschool moms especially where field trips are concerned.   And directions?  I won't even go there!

We made it safely to "the other side of the world" and were greeted by this fellow.

All the kids were given corn to feed the animals.  This guys was the bully in the bunch.

Must be the horns.

After feeding the animals we headed straight for the "milk the fake cow" race.  Now this was a hoot and the girls won!  You rock girls!!

Baby boy who just turned 8 (sniff, sniff).......

Baby Girl hard at work...

Then big brother's turn...

Then middle brother's turn...

One of our Classical Conversations tutors shows off a few photos.  She's a mom too!

These guys watched while we raced ducks....
Aren't they beautiful??

Duck racing............

Then off to mine for gems!!

Next was the hay ride and as always it's without hay.  Funny how it always is that way.  Guess I'm glad though.  Hay can be awfully prickly on the ole buns.

Then everyone had to scream to get "Old Bessy" running.  It reminded me of "Bus Driver, move that bus!"

This is one of my best friends.  She's a beautiful Child of the KING.  I just love her transparency.  Hey beautiful!  Bet you didn't know I snapped photos of you did ya?

Some of you may recognizer her as The Scooper.
This is her serious look.  Beautiful here too!  And applied makeup in the car which I thought so unfair as I wore NONE.

"Farmer Brown" fed his hand raised family of deer.

Yep, that's a ten point buck for all you hunters out there.

Next we learned about growing pumpkins.  I really enjoyed this part.  We just studied seeds so it was wonderful to hear the children's questions.

And the whole gang once we got back, had ice cream and got our very own tiny pumpkin...

Check back in soon.  I have a great contest coming up with prizes from BEEYOUTIFUL.  Love those guys.

Well, football season is drawing to an end.  We start playoffs on Saturday.  It's been a tough season.  We've lost most of our games but both boys have played well.

My dad just had a hip replacement.  He's doing well and comes home on Friday.

Tomorrow is field trip day.
YEA!!

Today we're plugging through school work.  It's rainy and cold.
Keep warm!
