• Dec. 30, 2008 - Are you NIV or KJV (or NKJV)? I just found out something.

I stumbled across this quiz and tried it. Interesting for sure.

Try Answering These From Your NIV

By Rex L. Cobb

INSTRUCTIONS:

Using the New International Version Bible, answer the following questions to this NIV quiz.

Do not rely on your memory. As the Bible is the final authority, you must take the answer from the Bible verse (not from footnotes but from the text).

  1. Fill in the missing words in Matthew 5:44. "Love your enemies,__________ them that curse you, ______________ to them that hate you, and pray for them that __________ and persecute you."

  2. According to Matthew 17:21, what two things are required to cast out this type of demon?

  3. According to Matthew 18:11, why did Jesus come to earth?

  4. According to Matthew 27:2, what was Pilate's first name?

  5. In Matthew 27:35, when the wicked soldiers parted His garments, they were fulfilling the words of the prophet. Copy what the prophet said in Matthew 27:35 from the NIV.

  6. In Mark 3:15, Jesus gave the apostles power to cast out demons and to: ____________

  7. According to Mark 7:16, what does a man need to be able to hear?

  8. According to Luke 7:28, what was John? (teacher, prophet, carpenter, etc.). What is his title or last name?

  9. In Luke 9:55, what did the disciples not know?

  10. In Luke 9:56, what did the Son of man not come to do? According to this verse, what did He come to do?

  11. In Luke 22:14, how many apostles were with Jesus?

  12. According to Luke 23:38, in what three languages was the superscription written?

  13. In Luke 24:42, what did they give Jesus to eat with His fish?

  14. John 3:13 is a very important verse, proving the deity of Christ. According to this verse (as Jesus spoke), where is the Son of man?

  15. What happened each year as told in John 5:4?

  16. In John 7:50, what time of day did Nicodemus come to Jesus?

  17. In Acts 8:37, what is the one requirement for baptism?

  18. What did Saul ask Jesus in Acts 9:6?

  19. Write the name of the man mentioned in Acts 15:34.

  20. Study Acts 24:6-8. What would the Jew have done with Paul? What was the chief captain's name? What did the chief captain command?

  21. Copy Romans 16:24 word for word from the NIV.

  22. First Timothy 3:16 is perhaps the greatest verse in the New Testament concerning the deity of Christ. In this verse, who was manifested in the flesh?

  23. In the second part of First Peter 4:14, how do [they] speak of Christ? And, what do we Christians do?

  24. Who are the three Persons of the Trinity in First John 5:7?

  25. Revelation 1:11 is another very important verse that proves the deity of Christ. In the first part of this verse Jesus said, "I am the A______________ and O___________, the _________ and the _______:"

Conclusion: Little space is provided for your answers, but it's much more than needed. If you followed the instructions above, you not only failed the test, you receive a big goose egg.

(Ed. These are all missing in the NIV.) So now what do you think of your "accurate, easy to understand, up to date Bible"?

If you would like to improve your score, and in fact score 100%, you can take this test using the Authorized (King James) Bible.

My personal conclusion: I use the NKJV (hubby uses NIV) I will stick with my version and show him the quiz. Everyone has to make their own choices.

• Aug. 29, 2008 - Ready to go!

Okay, I think we are ready!

We are beginning our year a little different but as life is always changing so must our fine tuned plans and schedules. (Mine never exactly work anyway). This year ds is working pretty much completely on his own. He is considered 8th grade. He is using McGuffey #3 (the original mcguffey readers 1836 version) for his reading & some language arts. Applications in Grammar, Apologia science, Teaching Textbooks for math, Living books for literature / history. He is playing his music for 2 or 3 hours a day so I consider that a good schedule. He plays piano and bass guitar.

For my girls I have been blessed to be able to borrow My Fathers World for Bible, history and science. (We are doing American History). They also use McGuffeys Readers and copy work for language arts. Christian Liberty Math and Teaching Textbooks. Other things of course like art, piano lessons etc.

All in all, I am pleased with how my year looks on paper, hopefully it plays out well too. I always try to remember that life gets in the way of all these careful plans so I won't be too dissapointed when things don't always go my way.

I also try to remember not to judge others in what they do. The older I get the more I realize I don't know anything.

God Bless
Miriam

• May. 6, 2008 - Everday Blessings I may take for granted

It is a beautiful day out today. I am not feeling well today but I am blessed anyway. A young friend of ours about 2 years old had her second open heart surgery last week while I was out taking my kids for a nature walk up the rock road and by the woods near our house. While others are working in an office or sitting with a sick child I am out telling my kids to get out of the tall grass before they get ticks.

We go for walks every day that is nice weather, we go down to the polebarn where my husband is working on equipment unless he is out in the field farming. My kids see their dad for lunch everyday and and dinner and sometimes in and out all day. We fish at 8 am any day of the week we want to or we pick up and go for a picinic. Sometimes we just work hard all day - but that is just it! how blessed am I that I have my kids and my husband. I see their faces everyday - I share my life with them and they with me.

Some families only get to spend time together on Sunday or sometimes less and here I have my family all the time. I am not saying that my life is perfect - it is far from that. I deal with rebelliousness from my son, and bickering at times from my daughters. I am a fallible human married to another fallible human so life will never be perfect until Jesus comes but I am blessed and no matter where we find ourselves we can choose to see the blessings around us and not dwell on the less than perfect things.

Look at the glass half full and the water will taste better!

• Mar. 29, 2008 - new bloggers

I am to announce that 2 of my kids have made their own blogs on homeschool blogger. I plan to let them blog 3 or 4 times a week depending on computer availability. Since we now have them doing math on the pc full time it is in use a lot.  You can visit their blogs they are Reborn1 and Fuzzyfriend. My almost 7 year old is wanting a blog to so I may let her add one as well.

I won't be letting them put any personal info online but they can try some blogging and reading other homeschool kids blogs.

Happy homeschooling to you, thats all for today.

• Mar. 25, 2008 - New priorities

I haven't posted in an extremely long time as you can see. Life has been busy. I have my hands full with my 5 blessings. Lately though I have been forced to re-evaluate my priorities. In January, I was thinking that maybe we don't do enough book work and the house really needs more attention and we aren't on a rigid enough schedule: blah, blah, blah. In February; my oldest child (12) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we found this out because he got really sick and we spent some time in the hospital. In March he also had unrelated surgery and has just had a rough time this year! I was thinking lately; what is his real view of God? How will he treat his spouse and children as an adult? Will he read his Bible and pray when I am not around to tell him to? Will he remember fun and good times at home or school work and chores the most? My priorities are not that he knows what a dangling participle is, or if he can spell better than every other kid his age or if he knows calculus before he is out of high school. They should be that he grows into a man of God, who loves his family, knows how to learn if he needs to know something new, and someone who looks back at his childhood with fond memories of happy moments and fun together. And a new priority for me is that my kids have a good view of God no matter what their circumstance is and that just in case they never make it to adulthood, we have shown them lots of love and given them all we could give while they are here. Since they are on loan to us anyway.

I hope this makes sense to anyone who reads it.

Miriam

• Oct. 21, 2006 - Voting day is really about good versus evil

The following was written by my husband for a church newsletter;

Election day is upon us. November 7, first Tuesday of the month. We are called to service to exercise a right that many around the world desire, and what many who have that right, exercise with contempt. So many choices, what shall I choose? Paul faced this choice, he said “though I know it is better by far to go on to be with God, I know it is better for you that I remain”. Every choice we make is spiritual vs. physical. Like Adam and Eve when satan visited Eve he said “you will not surely die for God knows that when you eat of this fruit you will be like God, knowing both good and evil”. And so the first promise of health care was given and a choice was made. The physical lived on but not for ever yet death came immediately in the spiritual leaving the physical to become corrupted unto death. When you go into the voting booth keep in mind that your choice what ever it is will be similar. If our hope is in God then our vote will be for God “spiritual” and if in the world “physical” our vote will be in vain. No government in this physical world can supply everything we need. Heath care, social security and anything else promised will not supply your every need. These things are both good and evil. Good that those who need help can find relief and evil that we are promised them for the sake of power. The future depends on us. For what future has not been shaped from the past? Remember Adam and Eve. A clear example that any promise from the world will break. Government is not God, though for many government has become a false savior. The authority that empowers government has been given to us and our system is designed so that we delegate our authority to individuals. Don’t give your authority to just any one. There are those who seemingly do not have the will of God in mind. I am not talking about my will or your will. It is by means of government through which the forces of evil prevail. While held in one hand it is precious and should be cherished. But with the other hand it must always be sifted for more cherishable stones of representation. Much like with the potters hand we were made into the image of God and so being we should do no less. Our vote should always be for transforming government in to the image of God. And so remember see I set before you both good and evil “same as in the garden” choose life so you may live and not so you should die. I urge you to vote but don’t blame Adam if the future does not turn out as it should especially if our choice is the same, that is to preserve the physical.

This election should be about establishing judges that rule righteously, consider Eli’s sons; what did God have to say about that? Read 1 Samuel chapter 2:12-36.

• Sep. 25, 2006 - My nice day

Well today the has been fruitful. I played blocks and counted with dear 3 year old, My 5 year old is learning to group by 10's and 1's to make teens, twenties etc. we had fun doing that. My 9 year old read an article on volcanoes and decided to make one with vinegar and baking soda (outside thank God). Dear Son 11, is reading and doing copy work from Noah Websters Advice to the Young. He enjoys the vocabulary he sees in these kind of texts as well as the in the KJV. He has also been listening to Swiss Family Robinson on cd. It is nice when the day runs smoothly.

Also the kids managed to get the house cleaned up last night instead of today so we started our day off good. That makes such a difference. Normally by Sunday evening the house is a mess from the weekend. Also I am not cleaning right now do to pregnancy issues so it is hard for me to look at it but also I don't like harping on the kiddos all day. Any way, they cleaned it in an hour last night and it was great.

It seems for me that as I pull the kids home more instead of them being invovled in too many activities the better they get along and the better our home life is. I think many well meaning people try to get you involved in so much but these things can be distractions that really pull you away from family instead of binding you together.

Well thats it for my great wisdom for the day

• Sep. 7, 2006 - To spank or not to spank

In a recent church newsletter a question was asked; "Do you think spanking a child is a good thing or do you think it's wrong?".  I felt the need to respond due to the rapid degradation of our nations children both secular and Christian raised. Here is my response:

My first response to this and any question that asks “do you think” or “do you feel” is this. It doesn’t really matter what I think or feel on the situation, What does the Bible say about this topic.

Here are a few verses on disciplining children:

Proverbs 13:24 He that spares his rod hates his son: but he that loves him chastens him early.

Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Proverbs 23:13-14 Withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with a rod, he shall not die. You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from Hell.

Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.

That was my answer but now I want to add some more to it. There is a child abuse problem in the world. Child abuse should be punished to the highest degree. However, what some would consider abuse now days is the opposite of what would have been considered abuse say in the days of our founding fathers.

I am most positive that it would have been considered extreme neglect to allow your child to be rude, disobedient and disrepectful in the early days of our country. It would have been abuse!

These days, training your child and protecting them from the worldly evils is considered abuse and over protecting. Allowing them to look like MTV rock stars (even as young children), to roam the neighborhood or country side with God knows who that you know nothing about, to be rude, watch filth which is now totally acceptable because even the commercials are trash and we are desensitized to it, all these things are totally fine. They are what we see every day, even in our churches. But we ask, is it okay to spank a child?

A spanking is love for your child so that he does not grow up to do wicked. A properly trained child most likely will not be spanked after the age of 5 or so because they will already be in the constant habit of obedience, respect for parents and others and for property.

My husband and I have learned this the hard way. We didn't discipline correctly when our first 2 children were little now they have a harder time because we have stay on them more. Our younger 2 are learning better because we disciplined them early like Proverbs said. The baby on the way has it best because we have learned valuable lessons.

From time to time we are asked "are you going to let your kids go to high school?" I want to respond - sure we are going to raise them good at home until they are teen agers and them send to the pit of hell to be trained in evolution, humanism, sex and drugs. But I just politely respond, no they will be homeschooled all the way.

Anyway, there is my 2 cents worth, what do you think?

Repectfully,

Miriam

• Jul. 29, 2006 - joining the ranks of large families

I am happy to announce that we are expecting our 5th child in March. I feel like I will be able to say we are a large family. Now I realize there are so many big families out there with 8 and 10 kids but hey we are at least bording on large now.

I am happy to say that I have only had one comment like "don't you know what causes that?" All the others have been congradulations. I was suprised because it used to erk me when I was pregnant with my 4th all the negative comments people would give.

Children are such a blessing from the Lord and I am so blessed to be able to carry another child. Now, I have been somewhat unorganzied so far and I am fed up with it. I have been trying to get it together and really get our family organized and on a schedule. I don't want a rigid every 15 or 30 minute schedule, just a basic plan to follow during the day. I really need to organize the kids chores as well. I feel like I clean all day and then it just looks like I have done nothing. Any advice is welcome.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.

• Jun. 24, 2006 - What is American History?

Today many History books have been altered, they take away from the true faith that our America was founded on. This nation has a Godly heritage. The schools don't teach that anymore. I am making sure I do.

Here are some things you may find interesting:

Providence: the care and superintendence that God takes over His creatures.

Some quotes from Founding Fathers:

William Bradford, Governor of the Pilgrims; "But these things did not dismay them... for their desires were set on the ways of God, and to enjoy His ordinances; but they rested on His Providence and knew who they had believed".

Declaration of Independence: And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our Sacred Honor."

George Washington: It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God, to Obey His Will, to be grateful for His benefits and humbly to implore His protection and favor.

These were taken from America's Providental History. I purchased this book to use for my kids however it is too deep for them. I am reading it so while we do American History I will be a better teacher.

As you celebrate the upcoming 4th of July, wear your honor for our country proudly. America was founded on what was good and right. Though we stray, still the foundation is there. We are Americans by birth but Patriots by choice!

• Jun. 17, 2006 - I am learning:

What I am learning is that life goes by so fast we need to relax a little. I am also taking this summer to relax things for my kids as well. I have been reading Raymond Moores book The Successful Homeschool Family handbook. It is really good. I am apart of the simply-beechick yahoo group and basicallybeechick yahoo group and they are very helpful. I am planning on delving deeply into American History with my kids this next year and making it fun. Also we will focus studying on the founding Fathers and why we have a free country and who fought so hard to keep it free. So far my plans for the next year are this:

1.Bible reading & discussion and or activity: Chronological study (we are in Joshua now) Bible memory work also.

2. McGuffey Readers: reading & copy work (this will take care of grammar, spelling & penmanship also)

3. Writing: letters, Paragraphs: topical, character, outline or commentary.

4. Mastering Mathmatics: games & worksheets

5. American History- Many resources and activities 2 or 3 days a week.

6.4-H - any projects my kids want to work on.

I plan to school 4 days a week and on Fridays do major housecleaning so when dad is off on Saturday we can enjoy him more and actually rest on Sunday.

• Jun. 8, 2006 - Where your heart is there your priorities are also.....

Where is your heart? It is easy to see, it is where ever your priorties lay. Do we say 1st priority is God, then family, then church then work etc... But put job & entertainment first then church then maybe family if they are lucky and say a half asleep prayer at night and read the Bible on Sunday morning?  if this is our routine then we are lying to ourselves.

If your a human then Biblically your first priority is God, period. If your a wife then your next priority should be your husband, and let me just state that this is a fact whether he is a sweet man, a spiritual leader, a loser, lazy, hardworking or whatever. (for help in this area read Created to be His Helpmeet from www.nogreaterjoy.org) Totally Biblical! If you have children then your next priority (after God & hubby) is to rear them, nuture them, train them and just love them and teach them to love God. Yes to be a rocket scientist if that is their calling but only after they have a relationship with Jesus first. Children should be taught in serving others before themselves as well.

After all these priorities are met then you can join in church functions, community service and etc.

At our house we are making a list of Goals and how to meet those goals in the days to come. You guessed it they start with the above priorities first.

May God bless your heart.

Thanks for reading,

Mirm

• May. 29, 2006 - Pickin Berries with the youngin's

Hi all! I wanted to share my strawberry picking day. I got up at 5am to get ready and to fix pancakes for the kids. They got up at 6. We left at 7a.m.. We picked strawberries for 1 1/2 hours and everyone helped. When we got home we all took turns cutting off the stems, washing, slicing and bagging them. Even 5yr old and 3 yr old.  Now, it would have been faster, less messy and done more perfectly if I had just done it all myself. However... It would not have taught them a thing about working together, it would not have given them this memory of our strawberry day. Yes there was some squabbling at a few moments but all in all we had a great day. Our strawberry shortcakes we will make will remind us how we all did it together.

I have currently started re-reading the Successfull Homeschool Family Handbook by Raymond and Dorothy Moore. Wow did I skip some parts or what last time I read it. I am learning so much. I am totally changing the way we do things here.

Well, there is much cleaning left to do here. Thanks for reading. - Miriam

• May. 19, 2006 - The seasons of motherhood

Ecc 3:1 To Everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.

For Mothers there is also such seasons. A time for newborns and a time for grandchildren. A time for enjoying your children and a time of discipline. A time for wiping noses and changing diapers and a time for playing ball and playing chauffer. A time for listening and a time for instructing. a time for laughing and a time for crying. A time when you can kiss away the hurts and a time when you have to wait on God. A time when you must let go and watch your little ones go out into the world and make their own way. May God bless what ever season you are facing and may you handle it with peace and trust in Him.

Let the Master of the seasons handle yours.

• May. 17, 2006 - Homeschooling Sisters(inlaw)

Hi I am blessed to have 2 sister-in-laws that also homeschool. My older sil is author Leisha Kelly who writes Christian fiction novels and has like 7 books out now. She writes the Julia's Hope series and Tahn series.  She lives 5 hours from me. My younger sil is homeschool momto 2 very active boys and wife to one very active hubby! My younger brother likes adventure. They live about 1 hour away. It is so nice when we all camp and get together or even when they all just meet at my house. We always have like our own little mini homeschool mom conference and the cousins love getting together.  My older brother KJ Kelly is a mountain man type. He goes to rendevous and sets up a teepee and shows his hand made leather and bows. I have been making a website for him - atleast I am trying to. You can view it at www.eaglewindarts.com  He has some real cool stuff! The best thing is we are all Christian homeschoolers and love being together when we can.

Have a blessed day.

• May. 15, 2006 - Newbie blogger

Hi! I am going to give this blogging a try. I am a Christian wife and mother who is educating my 4 (so far) children with the Bible, the Ruth Beechick books and a few choice pieces of curriculum. My kiddo's are : Dear Son soon to be 11, dear daughter 9, dear daughter 5 and ddaughter 3. We have used Student of the Word curriculum this year and will be using some of the methods from that as we continue on this awesome journey of the heart, soul and mind. We live in rural Southern Illinois where my dear hubby farms some ground (grain farmer). We have goats and dogs so far but we may get some chickens soon. We are getting our first beehive next week and looking forward to that. My dear son will be making a hobby out of beekeeping. My hubby and kids also are very interested in snakes and love to catch them - I don't share that enthusiasm.

I look forward to blogging, thanks for reading!
