Book Report on Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift

First I should say that just so you know, I read this book for school, not because I like it or anything. ;)

The first thing that I used to think of when I heard the words "Gulliver's Travels,"  was a little children's story that was made into an animated  movie about a man who got shipwriecked on an island of Lilliputians.

But now that I've read the book, (the original unabridged version,) I don't know how it could ever be called a cute little children's story. It is a political satire about England in the 1600 and 1700's, and while it does have a story in the beginning about Lilliput, there are three other stories about Gulliver's adventures in three other fantastical lands, one of them with giants, and one with intelligent horses as the main race, and dumb humans pulling carts, and another about about a strange race of people that were obsessed with music and mathematics, and were trying to do impossible things like get rays from the sun out of cucumbers.

I also think that if Jonathan Swift had taken all the points he was trying to make in Gulliver's Travels, and told them more directly in a better story, than it would probably be a very good book.

Then at the end of the book there are two "masterpieces of satire" as the preface calls them, called The tale of the Tub and The battle of the Books, which are hard to understand if you don't live in England in 1726. Here is a name of one of the chapters in The tale of the Tub: "A digression concerning the original, the use, and improvement of madness in a commonwealth."

Some parts of the book were boring, some didn't make sense, (to me), and some were just really gross. I think Jonathan Swift suffered from insanity after if not during the time when he wrote this book.  If they made a movie of the whole book that was close to the book, I would definitely not watch it.

I'm glad I'm done reading this book.

Cyote!

Today we went hiking in a park down the street, and we came across a coyote.  This picture was not taken through a window like most of the pictures on my blog.

I'm going to post a book report soon on Gulliver's Travels....

Sorry, it seems like all I post on here is pictures, and barely any words!  I'll try to find something more interesting to post about.
