Thanks
Thank you all for the lovely comments. It made my day today.
To answer a few questions you had:
The story behind having an aviary in our house....
When we finally found this place to rent we were very happy with all that it offered and liked this lovely square garden that was in the middle of the house but a little puzzled at what to do because it was just open to the outside! After about a week or so living here we realized we needed to do something because it was letting in a lot of mosquitoes at night! We don't have a problem with malaria mosquitoes here (PTL!) but they are annoying when you're sitting in the living room in the evening or at the table eating supper and you are constantly swatting and scratching!
So we had the thought to put in a screen roof at ceiling level (the "hole" that is this little garden goes all the way up to the roof). Shane and I do this a lot but as we sat there talking about that idea we began to throw out other ideas. Especially since I was not looking forward to dealing with kids playing in the dirt right by the hallway! Then came the thought of an aviary!
You can see here where we put the screen "roof" and then had a frame and door made with small chicken wire type screen.

We used to have bunnies in there but with too much rain (which comes right in there) they get sick from not having a dry floor to hop around on or sleep on. Birds do MUCH better in there. Oh yeah and Mister Toad! They have a neighbor who sometimes annoys them because he flops himself in their water dish/bird bath for a soak quite regularly.
Someone mentioned a cat....we DO have one but he can't get in. He will sit and watch them though. And he climbs up the outside. He's even sat on the screen "roof" before too. :) Shane says it's like the cooking channel for him. He can sit and watch but can't eat it.
We ARE getting to have a lot of little birdies now! Shane asked a local pet store if they would buy some from us if we brought them in and they said yes! So we'll probably do that and we have at least one friend who would like a pair. I have a feeling if we let some loose they would do ok in the wild. The weather is not harsh here since it stays about the same temperature all year round and they would probably like all the nesting materials out there in the world. Lol. :)
We enjoy them and they are so fun to watch! When we have visitors everyone loves to see them and talk about them. And they ARE such a great way to teach our kids about things like being hard workers, taking care of family, being creative and industrious, about death (we've found several dead baby birds and the first female died), loneliness (the first male was lonely without a mate for a while before we got him another female), about eggs and hatching and how baby birds get their feathers slowly....and much more!
Final count YESTERDAY....24 birds!
