Possible help for Mississippi Back to School Shoppers in July
SALES TAX HOLIDAY NOTICE
House Bill 348, as passed during the 2009 Regular Session of the Mississippi Legislature amended Section 27-65-111, Miss. Code Ann. to provide for a sales tax holiday to begin at 12:01 a.m. on the last Friday in July and end at 12:00 midnight the following Saturday. For 2009, the sales tax holiday will begin Friday, July 31, 2009 and end Saturday, August 1, 2009. Each year the dates for the sales tax holiday will coincide with the last Friday in July.
The sales tax holiday allows customers to purchase certain articles of clothing or footwear free from Mississippi sales tax. The sales price of each article of clothing or footwear must be less than $100.00 to qualify for the sales tax holiday. Items priced at $100.00 or more will be taxable during the sales tax holiday.
The following items do not qualify for the sales tax holiday: jewelry, handbags, luggage, umbrellas, wallets, watches, backpacks, briefcases, garment bags, skis, swim fins, roller blades, skates and similar items and accessories.
Adequate records must be maintained to substantiate tax classifications of sales and purchases regarding the sales tax holiday. When reporting the qualifying sales, retailers should use one of the open lines in the “Schedule of Itemized Deductions” to report the dollar amount of qualifying sales. “QSTHS” (Qualifying Sales Tax Holiday Sales) should be used to indicate the deduction.
All retailers located in Mississippi are required to participate in the first sales tax holiday. Beginning in 2010, cities may decide through a resolution adopted by the city not to participate in the annual sales tax holiday. Businesses may not participate in the annual sales tax holiday if they are located in cities that have adopted a resolution not to participate in the sales tax holiday.
Beginning in 2010, cities choosing to opt out of the sales tax holiday must send a certified copy of the cities resolution stating the date the resolution shall take effect. A certified copy of the resolution shall be furnished to the State Tax Commission at least ninety (90) days prior to the date upon which the city desires the resolution to take effect.
Please see the Sales Tax Holiday brochure on our website at www.mstc.state.ms.us for additional information concerning the annual sales tax holiday. |

MSU Kids Cooking Camps Coming Up Soon
MSU helps kids cook up fun
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Mississippi State University will hold two camps this summer to teach kids and teens that there can never be too many cooks in the kitchen.
MSU’s Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion is offering “Fun with Food” camp for third- through sixth-grade students and “Culinology for Teens” camp for ninth- through 12th-grade students. Both camps will provide participants hands-on food discovery experiences.
“Fun with Food” takes place on campus from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. June 22-26 and will include activities to spark children’s interest in food and give them an understanding of how food makes its way from the farm to their tables. Sylvia Byrd, an associate professor in the department, and Roland Parny, coordinator of culinary activities, will lead the camp.
Campers will take trips to Mayhew Tomato Farm, MSU’s cheese plant and dairy farm, the food processing plant and sensory laboratory, and the grocery store. Each day will include a cooking experience that will teach them about nutrition, health and the culinary arts. Campers also will learn more about mathematics, specifically fractions, by measuring ingredients.
“Our camp can be beneficial to the whole family,” Byrd said. “Grandparents who have their grandchildren for summer visits find it to be a great chance for the kids to have fun. But what is even better is that the children bring the lessons home, creating some memorable activities grandparents can enjoy with the children.”
The $200 registration fee for “Fun with Food” includes snacks and lunch. To register, visit http://www.fsnhp.msstate.edu or call Byrd at (662) 325-0919. The registration deadline is June 15.
“Culinology for Teens” will be held from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. July 13-17 on campus and is open to all teen-agers interested in discovering how to have fun with food. The camp blends the culinary arts with food science.
Jason Behrends, assistant Extension and research professor in the department, will lead the camp’s activities. Campers will learn proper knife skills, cooking methods and about the role specific ingredients play in recipes.
“The camp is the perfect blend of fun with food and science,” Behrends said. “The students will learn everything from pastry and soup making to preparing stocks and sauces.”
The $250 registration fee for “Culinology for Teens” includes snacks, lunch and course materials. To register, visit http://www.fsnhp.msstate.edu or call Behrends at (662) 325-3200 or Elizabeth Dimino at (662) 325-8632. The registration deadline is July 1. |

Field Trip Idea for North Mississippi
This is the Grand opening week of Heathworks! in Tupelo, MS
http://nmiss.healthworkskids.org/healthworks-mississippi/index.cfm/About-Us/
Spearheaded by the Health Care Foundation of North Mississippi, HealthWorks! is
a curriculum-based, interactive health education center that will offer hands-on learning
to area schoolchildren ages kindergarten through eighth grade. It will be housed in the
former Kroger building on Industrial Road in Tupelo.
Only the second center of its kind in the United States, it will replicate the
HealthWorks! Kids Museum created by Memorial Health System in South Bend. Its
purpose is two-fold—to enhance the health and science curricula for area schools and to
effect lifelong change for healthier lifestyles among area children.
Through humor, hands-on learning and interactive exhibits and presentations, the
HealthWorks! programs will educate students about proper nutrition, fitness, tobacco
prevention, oral health and puberty. Among the multitude of activities, students can visit
the Main Brain Theatre to get a peak inside a giant replica of the brain; climb the Skin
Crawl Wall as they learn about the body’s largest organ; and play interactive games to
track the path that food travels through the digestive system.
“HealthWorks! is not an entertainment venue; it is an education venue,” says Grace
Clark, who is chairing HCF’s capital campaign.

TEENPACT Mississippi Registration Now Open

When the time comes to learn lessons in political science, Christian students all across the nation are turning to a TeenPact state capitol experience instead of just a textbook. TeenPact teaches the foundations of government with the legislative branch, beginning with a week-long session at the student's own capitol.
Spiritually, TeenPact teaches Biblical principles of government and family, going hand-in-hand with the values of families who participate. It is very important that our young people see that spiritual revival is the answer to America's problems - not politics. We teach students that every Christian must pray and vote according to Biblical principles.
Overall, studies in government are beneficial in any vocation. Our hands-on civics courses offer an incredible platform for rhetoric, interpersonal communication, and current events. There is a great need for godly, powerful communication within any arena and our goal is to train up a generation of young people to fill that need.
Yours for calling families back to God,

Tim Echols
Founder and President

Introducing myself!
Happy New Year! I am excited to begin this blog and I hope to be a blessing to all of you.
My name is Stacey Posey and I have lived in North Mississippi all my life. I am blessed to be the wife of Mike and the mother of four little boys. We have homeschooled their whole life and love life in our comfy home in the country. We are the most excited about a new baby on the way due out in June!
By the combination of being actively involved in our local homeschool group, being a member of HSLDA and just loving all the events pertaining to families in the state, I will post on this blog all interesting happenings in the state.
Being a native Mississippian, I truely believe we are so blessed with most of our homeschooling endevors. I'll be on the lookout for anything in the state pertaining to home education, field trips, legislation, and etc. I would be thrilled if you would submit your own local support group info here for inclusion on TOS state page: http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/hsn/info-submit.php |
