good bye

To all our homeschooling friends in Missouri,

Since about 2002, I have served as the volunteer Missouri State Coordinator for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and its website, including the maintenance of the Missouri blog at Homeschool Blogger for the last couple of years.  Next week, we are moving to Salem, IL.  We shall still be close enough to St. Louis so that I can continue working with the Greater St. Louis Area Home Educators Expo ( www.stlhomeschoolexpo.com --the dates for 2009 are Mar. 26-28, and we have already confirmed our keynote speakers; they are Dr. Jay Wile of Apologia Educational Ministries; Ray, Charlene, and John Notgrass of The Notgrass Co.; and Dr. Stephen Guffanti of Rocket Phonics).

Now that we are moving to Illinois, I don't know exactly what, if any, will be my future relationship with the magazine, but it has certainly been a blast working with all the good folks at TOS over the last few years. Someone has expressed a degree of interest in the Missouri Blog and I directed this person to the staff at TOS, so I don't know how or even whethere that is progressing.  But this will be my last Missouri Blog.  If you are interested, you can read my personal blog at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/wswalker310/ and my hymn studies blog at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/hymnstudies/ .

Sincerely,

Wayne S. Walker

things for homeschoolers to do this coming week around St. Louis, MO

SAD NEWS:  The Walker family will be moving from St. Louis this summer.  In fact, we need to be out of our house by the end of this month (July 31).  Therefore, unless someone steps forward and is willing to continue this blog, I will have to discontinue my participation within the next few weeks.  I am sorry to have to do so, but I will simply not be able to keep up with events in the St. Louis area.  If someone is interested, it really doesn't take that much time, but I do have to be in touch with different local homeschool support groups to learn of their activities that are open to all homeschoolers; various homeschool-related organizations and businesses such as Pillar Foundation, Day Spring Centre for Arts and Education, Providence Fine Arts Academy, the Homeschool Sampler, The Family Vision Library, etc.; and other groups that have events for or of interest to homeschoolers such as the Zoo, the History Museum, the Art Museum, Missouri Botanical Gardens, The Magic House, the Science Center, etc.  Most of them have sent their information to me via e-mail.  And this is just in the St. Louis area--there are other things around the state that I have always had trouble getting information about.   We will certainly miss all the friends that we have made in the homeschooling community here in St. Louis.

Tuesday, July 15, 7:30 p.m. -- Michael Eastman and the Modern Past - A Presentation and Book Signing; Co-sponsored by the Duane Reed Gallery in Lee Auditorium.  Free, but ticketed.  Think of the quirky buildings you pass every day but whose quiet beauty you take for granted - the movie houses, juke joints, soda fountains, barbershops, roadside diners and storefront churches.  You don't miss them until they're gone.  As suburban sprawl and strip malls conquer the country, these vestiges of a lost way of life are falling under the wrecking ball.  Photographer Michael Eastman has made the ultimate road trip, crisscrossing the nation dozens of times, to capture these buildings on film before they vanish and has packaged them for us so neatly in his book Vanishing America: The End of Main Street Diners, Drive-Ins, Donut Shops and Other Everyday Monuments.

MATH CONTEST CAMP 2008
Week 1:  June 22-27
             For Students entering grades 5-8
Week 2:  July 6-11
             For Students entering grades 7-12
Campus of Southwest Baptist University, Bolivar, MO
1600 University Avenue Bolivar, Missouri 65613      What is Math Contest Camp?...  It is an opportunity for students who love math to work through old math contests together (such as MATHCOUNTS, AMC 10/12, and other contests); discuss these contests and how to do the problems and other similar problems; develop creativity and problem-solving abilities; develop discipline and self-confidence as they learn new mathematics and mathematically related activities; plus recreation and social times.
Dr. Kevin Hopkins, Ph.D in mathematics from University of Illinois and Chair of SBU Math Dept, is the host instructor for Math Contest Camps at SBU.  He has hosted student math contests for 9 years, works with a math contest club at his local middle school, conducted week-long summer workshops for teachers, etc.  He loves working with children  to encourage their love of learning math.
This is an opportunity for students to work with peers as they  learn and are challenged in the area of math.  There is a mix of public, private, and homeschool students who attend Math Contest Camp, and all greatly enjoy it!  Dr. Hopkins has given permission to share this info with homeschoolers
In addition to working with math, students often have opportunities to swim at the campus pool, climb the rock wall on campus, play lots of Scatterball, etc.  Overall, it is a very fun and educational week.  Chaperones are Christian parents or teachers who work closely with Dr. Hopkins to make the camp experience safe, fun, and rewarding.
It is not required that a student be familiar with Math Contests, nor enjoy the competition aspect of math contests.  The student does need to enjoy math, as that will be the focus of the camp.   For more info about Math Contest Camp 2008 at SBU in Bolivar:
http://users.sbuniv.edu/~khopkins/2008mcc.html
The camp will be held on the campus of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO, but is not sponsored by SBU.  It is the personal work of Dr. Hopkins, Chair of the Mathematics Department at Southwest Baptist University.  Bolivar is 130 miles from Kansas City, 190 miles from St. Louis, and 25 miles north of Springfield.  The Lake of the Ozarks and Branson are nearby attractions families could visit before or after dropping their camper off.  Although not officially sponsoring the camp, Southwest Baptist University is the location of the facilities.
To contact SBU, call 1-800-526-5859 or (417) 328-5281.  Feel free to contact Dr. Hopkins (e-mail: khopkins@sbuniv.edu ) if you have any questions.  You may also call him at (417) 328-1675 or fax him at (417) 328-1658.

More "Trouble Right Here in River City" (Er, Missouri)

Valerie Bonham Moon, News & Commentary Home Page editor for Home Education Magazine, sent the following item to a Missouri homeschooling e-mail list on June 11, 2008. Valerie began, "Springfield mom jailed (2 days) for son's truancy. This is just fyi. I don't think it has strong implications about homeschooling in Missouri. From what I saw when I was looking at the background, the local prosecutor has also had to take on gangs in Springfield schools and appears (from the few reports I looked at) to be a law 'n order kind of guy concerning schooling. Maybe folks from Springfield can fill us in on anything we need to know about that the articles don't tell us. Missouri mom jailed for son's truancy:

http://www.homeedmag.com/blogs/newscomm/?p=1517 ."

Here is the background information that Valerie provided on her blog. She wrote, "I haven’t seen any mention of this truancy case on Missouri email lists or in previous news alerts, so I had to dig for background on it. The comments at various sites added to the overall picture of the case, and this situation almost looks like one of those unfortunate examples of a continuing collection of bad choices, poor skills, and anger stirred in the crucible of compulsory school attendance.

"Even though ‘homeschooling’ is mentioned, I saw no indication in the news reports that the prosecutors pursued the case because of ‘homeschooling’ itself. Of course, this is only a reflection of what has been reported, and non-homeschoolers can be unaware of what needs to be looked at concerning ‘homeschooling’ itself. In Missouri the crucial item would be the daily log of activities. No record = no defense."

Parent gets 2 days in jail for child’s truancy, 10 Jun 2008, KSPR, Springfield, Missouri: Tuesday Kathleen Casteel was sentenced for violating the state’s truancy law. According to Assistant Prosecutor Joe Knipp, Casteel’s son missed nearly half the school days at Reed Middle School last year.

Mother sentenced to jail for son’s truancy, 11 June 2008, News-Leader.com, Springfield, Missouri: He also ordered Casteel –who has home schooled her son since his enrollment was revoked from Springfield Public Schools –to put the child back into a public school. That provision came after prosecutors argued Casteel was not home schooling her son in compliance with state law, something defense attorneys contested.…Fitzsimmons’ order that Casteel enroll her son in public school also is an aberration, according to Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education spokesman Jim Morris. "That is a rare step," Morris said, noting that neither his office nor many school districts regulate home schooling. "The state has always had a hands-off policy."

Give truancy trial a meaning, 26 April 2008, News-Leader, Springfield, Missouri: No other school scofflaw in memory has been so brazen as to push the attendance police to this degree. None had demanded a trial in front of a panel of her peers. None had shouted so publicly: This just wasn’t my fault. So what will a chronicler of history say? What does this mean? Was she martyr or malingerer?...The case left the public defenders in the case asking at trial: What purpose does this serve? Observers also ask whether parents like Casteel face a Catch-22: use too much force to get a kid to go to school, you get charged with abuse. Don’t get the kid to school, you can be charged under the truancy law. Greene County Prosecutor Darrell Moore defends the decision by the school district, embraced by his office, to prosecute Casteel.

Mother from Springfield could get week in jail for son being truant, 24 April 2008, KY3.com, Springfield, Missouri: Casteel testified that her son, who is mentally retarded, didn’t like school and often fought her efforts to make him go. She said he would throw things, leave their home through his bedroom window, and even once tried to jump out of her moving car as she took him to school. Casteel said her son said other Reed students teased him and tried to start fights with him. She also said, part of the time, her son lived with her ex-husband in Buffalo.

A district attendance advisor testified she visited Casteel’s home about 25 times, and sometimes took the boy to school with her. The advisor also said Casteel’s other children also had attendance problems, and one time she caught Casteel lying about whether the children were home. A Reed attendance secretary said she repeatedly told Casteel to call school if her son wasn’t coming, but Casteel rarely called.

Comment by Susan: I saw that this morning, Valerie. Blogged it because it reminded me of a situation that occurred in southern IL a couple of years ago. A mom who was a "truant homeschooler" went by the wayside in the IL homeschool community until after the conviction. Then darn if the Regional Office of Ed and the Atty General didn’t think that they should have "home visits" with all homeschoolers in the area to make sure they had "established curriculum" and were homeschooling properly.

I hope MO homeschoolers pay attention to this. I thought the MO DoE spokesman stating that this is very rare and they have a hands-off policy regarding homeschoolers, while the judge was deciding otherwise was concerning too.

Comment by Pamela: I followed this case when it occurred and it was a clear cut case the mom simply refused to either get her special needs kid to school or call/report the absence and it was only a 7%-9% attendance yearly. I remember when it came out at the media, the mom stated "I tried homeschooling, but it was too expensive and too many rules" Personally, I cringed and was glad to see this case come and go and out of sight out of mind. I don't see any implications in homeschool world whatsoever, each of these cases were the ultimate extreme.

Response by Valerie: I'm not happy when I see them either. For blogigng purposes, I'm usually stuck between the rock and hard place of either 'airing the alleged dirty laundry' (which in this case wasn't homeschooling laundry but truancy laundry), or having homeschool critics accuse 'homeschoolers' of ignoring the 'dark side' of homeschooling. I'm glad there are folks like you, Pamela, who know more about the background than what shows up as news reports online.

ST. CHARLES CHRISTIAN HOME EDUCATORS USED CURRICULUM SALE
Thursday, June 12,  12:30-3:30 for buyers
Grace Community Chapel, 7661 Mexico Road, St. Peters,  MO  63376
Anyone Can Buy and Sell Books.  This sale is not limited to SCCHE members.
Costs are minimal.  All money paid for selling books or for Early Bird Admission will be applied toward the Widow and Orphanage Funds. SCCHE will pay for the use of the building and any incidental costs of the sale itself.
Envelope Pricing:  Books are priced "envelope style" and placed by subject in various rooms throughout the church. (The rooms are labeled.) Volunteers are in each room to help shoppers and to monitor the books. To purchase books, you take the books that you want to a central table in the foyer, peel the envelopes off of the books, put the appropriate amount of money in the envelopes (cash or check unless seller specifies "cash only"), and then seal the envelopes.  The envelope is then turned in to the "cashier" in the payment room.  Envelopes are filed alphabetically and can be picked up by the seller when seller wants to pick up.
There will be limited space available for those who just want to be at a table to sell their books.  Round tables will rent for $10. There are about 8 round tables available.  8 foot tables will rent for $12. There are only 4 or 5 available.  If you want to sell your books at a table (you sit at the table) you need to let Phebe Martin know by May 23rd. After May 23rd, any available tables will be opened up for vendors to rent.  To reserve a table, contact Phebe Martin at phebem.scche@gmail.com  or (636) 939-3225 (e-mail preferred) and then mail a check to Phebe for the rental of the table. Please include your name, e-mail  address, and phone number with your table reservation. Because of the limited number of tables, reservations are not secured until Phebe has your check and information for table reservation in her hand. Phebe's address is:
Phebe Martin
3021 Arrow Rock Dr.
St. Charles, MO  63303
Final confirmation of your table will be sent to you via e-mail and will not occur until your check is received. If you do not have an e-mail address, please include a self addressed stamped envelope with your reservation, so Phebe can mail you table reservation confirmation.   Obtaining a table on which to sell your books (instead of selling envelope style) will occur on a first-come, first-served basis. Most tables will be needed for books that will be sorted and sold envelope style. You will be notified if all reservable tables have been filled.
All sellers will receive an "Early Bird Shopping" ticket on the day they check in to set up your table. They may have as many as two tickets if they have two people working at your table. We ask that you remember that all money generated by table rental and ticket sales goes toward widows and orphans.
Vendor Tables:  Vendor's tables will be $30 and will not be available until after May 23rd, giving homeschoolers the time necessary to rent table space if they so desire.  Vendors' tables will be round.  Vendors may bring in their own tables, space available. Cost for space: $30.  Contact Phebe Martin if you are interested in a table.
Book Pricing Fellowship (Wednesday 1:00 to 3:00 p.m).  If all this sounds too confusing, or if you would like some fellowship while you price your books, please join us for an afternoon of fellowship and book pricing at Grace Community Chapel.   Volunteers will be available to help you price your books. You can then leave your books at Grace so that they can be placed in the appropriate rooms. The price for selling envelope style when you leave your books on Wednesday afternoon is $5.
Volunteers Needed;  If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please contact Margaret Porch at sccheleaders@gmail.com  / phone 636-441-5470 or Phebe Martin at phebem.scche@gmail.com  / phone 636-939-3225 (email preferred in both cases).  When you email, please include your phone number so you can be called back.  Volunteers needed to help price books donated to the widow’s / orphanage fund.  Many of these books will be dropped off early.  Contact Margaret Hibbeler at 636-939-9755 or / st_charles_hibbelers@yahoo.com  to volunteer to help price widow / orphanage fund books.

Many people, young and old, of all  ability have found a tremendous sense of growth, and personal satisfaction through the process of painting with expression. Unlike  traditional painting, which has the stigma that it must be completed "perfectly", Creative Expression painting differs both in  approach and intent.

Note from Home School Legal Defense Association

May 29, 2008

Mineral Area College Drops GED Demand

Home School Legal Defense Association members Sherry and Norman Kissinger enrolled their son in nearby Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri, but were told he would not be eligible for financial aid unless he had a GED.

The family called HSLDA for help. Attorney Scott Woodruff wrote a letter to Financial Aid Director Denise Sebastian. He explained that back in the 1990s, the Federal Student Aid Handbook created problems by misconstruing federal law in such a way that some believed, incorrectly, that homeschool graduates must have a GED to be eligible for financial aid. He explained that HSLDA subsequently worked with the U.S. Department of Education to revise the handbook and provide proper guidance. It is now very clear that homeschool graduates are eligible for financial aid without a GED. They simply certify that they completed their secondary education program.

After receiving this letter, Mineral Area College changed their policy. The Kissingers’ son was allowed to pursue financial aid without a GED. The family passed the word on, and many homeschoolers have subsequently been admitted and allowed to seek financial aid without a GED.

Community colleges can be an excellent resource for older high school students to get exposure to college-level work and earn college credit while still in high school. Community college teachers are often willing to talk to parents to help them decide if they would be comfortable with their student learning under the teacher.

when the social worker knocks at your door

The following came from our friend in St. Charles, MO, Margaret Porch.  She and her husband Mike lead a great group there called the St. Charles Christian Home Educators.

Hi everyone,
I got a phone call from a SCCHE member a bit earlier tonight.  She had a DFS agent at her door.  She did not let them into her house (Never let anyone from DFS in to your house).  Someone had reported that she was abusing one of her children - a totally false report.  The DFS agent told her that HSLDA couldn't help her because this was not an education related matter.  WRONG.  If a DFS representative comes to your door for ANYTHING at all, call HSLDA.  Fortunately, this family was a member of HSLDA and did call HSLDA and received advice.  The matter was resolved within a couple of hours with DFS concluding that there was no justification to the charge at hand. Praise the Lord that nothing else came of this particular incident and pray that this conclusion is the end of this matter.

Again, I want to review what you should do in case you have a DFS representative knocking at your door.

     1.  If you are not a member of HSLDA, then you should consider joining.  I am not saying this right now to "frighten" you into joining HSLDA, but just as good advice that I would give to anyone at any time.  It's just that when DFS calls on someone, I remember to remind everyone to consider joining HSLDA.  Being a member of HSLDA is sort of like having auto insurance, but it's insurance for your homeschool.  You hope you never need it, and you probably won't (just like auto insurance), but you are certainly glad you have it if you need it.

     2.  Use a thumbtack and put a copy of your HSLDA membership card on the wall by every phone.  The HSLDA contact info is right there on the card.  So is your membership number.

     3.  Program the HSLDA emergency number in to your cell phone and have your membership card in your purse or wallet.

     4. NEVER let anyone into your house without a search warrant - not a policeman who has been sent by DFS (this does occur) and especially not a DFS worker.  Step out onto the porch, close the door behind you (if possible), and talk to the person or people at your door.

     5. ALWAYS be polite to them, but do not answer any questions until you have HSLDA on the phone.

     6. Do not let them intimidate you.  If they tell you that you cannot call someone (like HSLDA), inform them (nicely) that you are going to make the phone call anyway and that you will answer their questions after you make the call.

     7.  Call HSLDA no matter what the problem is - education related or not.  They will give advice over the phone for non education-related problems.  Never assume that HSLDA cannot help you.

     8.  Do not let DFS have access of any kind to your children unless HSLDA advises you to do so.

     9.  Do not sign any papers without advice from HSLDA.

     10.  If they tell you that the problem at hand is not an education related problem, then you do not have to answer any education-related questions.  Once they find out you are a homeschooler, they may ask education-related questions.  They did to the homeschool mom that called tonight.
Again, pray for this situation and for protection of homeschoolers from false accusations.

Dear Heavenly Father,
I praise You for your protection for this family tonight.  You are Almighty and Sovereign, wonderful in Your ways.  Thank you that I was home and able to answer questions for this family and that they called HSLDA and received the legal advice that they needed.  Thank you for intervening and demonstrating to DFS that there were no issues.  I pray that nothing further results from this incident and that You will bring peace to this family tonight and that they will be able to sleep, resting in the assurance of Your love.
In Jesus' name
Amen

That's all for now.
Have a blessed day.
Margaret

Trouble right here in River City!

Er, I mean trouble right here in St. Louis County, MO (can you tell what we've been listening to in the car?).

On May 30, 2008, the Home School Legal Defense Association, under the headline "Zoning Enforcers Threaten Big Familym" reported, "Longtime HSLDA members Ben and Flora Worth (name changed to protect the family’s privacy), of St. Louis County, Missouri, were surprised to open their door and find a policeman, zoning enforcement officer and a social worker. They said a complaint had been filed about too many people living in the house. The Worths have a large family. After questioning the family, the officials left with a warning: they said they would not 'push it' unless they received more complaints. Shaken, the Worths called Home School Legal Defense Association for help. HSLDA Attorney Scott Woodruff, not wanting the family to live in fear of what might happen if another complaint were filed, promptly called the zoning officer. Woodruff knew that most zoning ordinances do not limit the number of people who can live in a house if they are all of the same immediate family, so he had doubts about the validity of the officials’ threat. He wanted to know exactly what ordinance they were supposedly violating. When Woodruff called the zoning official, he acknowledged that the reason he, the policeman, and social worker had left the Worth home without taking any action against them was not simply a matter of magnanimously letting a zoning violation slide (until the next complaint). He conceded that there was simply no zoning violation in the first place! It’s not against any law—zoning or otherwise—to have a large family." Praise the Lord for the work of HSLDA!

NATIONAL MEETING ON ASTRONOMY EDUCATION
May 31 and June 1, 2008
Renaissance Grand Hotel, 800 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO  63101
Educators from around the U.S. (and more than a dozen other countries) will gather in St. Louis to discuss the upcoming
International Year of Astronomy, and how best to share the excitement of observing the sky and understanding the universe with students, teachers, the media, and the public at large. This national meeting on astronomy education and outreach in St. Louis features hands-on workshops open to educators at minimal cost.
During the weekend of May 31 and June 1, there will be a series of hands-on workshops to help classroom and informal (might not "informal" include homeschoolers?) educators convey the excitement of astronomy more effectively. Scientists and educators from NASA, major observatories, and educational organizations will offer full day and half-day workshop that do not assume that participants have a strong background in astronomy.
Among the weekend workshops being offered for educators at all levels are:
* Telling Science Like a Story: Storytelling from Many Cultures
* In the Footsteps of Galileo: Helping Students Recreate Some of the "AHA! Moments" from Galileo's Work
* The New Media and Education: Facebook, YouTube, Second Life, etc.
* Amateur Astronomers as Champions of Astronomy Outreach
* Astronomy Activities for After-school and Community Programs
* Preserving Dark Skies: Activities to Raise Public Awareness of "Light Pollution"
Weekend registration is only $25 per day. The workshops will take place at the Renaissance Grand Hotel right across the street from the St. Louis Convention Center. Some of the workshops are very close to being sold out, so we urge interested educators to reserve a spot as soon as possible.
     For more information, see: http://www.astrosociety.org/events/2008mtg/workshops.html
This unusual program is part of the 212th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society, the main organization of professional astronomers in the U.S. The educational sessions are being organized as a meeting-within-a-meeting by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, a national organization whose primary mission is education and outreach.
The United Nations has declared 2009 the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Galileo turning his telescope to the heavens and changing forever humanity's view of itself. Events and programs will be offered throughout the U.S. and the world during 2009 and beyond.

apology from Subway and Scholastic

Here is an apology and explanation from Subway:

Regarding your concerns about the Subway contest that excludes home schools from contest eligibility, Scholastic and Subway apologize to all individuals who have taken offense at this. Our intention was never to make independent schooled children feel discriminated against or excluded from this specific promotion.

Throughout the course of the year Scholastic runs a number of contests and sweepstakes that are open to all teachers and students. The eligibility of this contest in particular was solely put in place to award a large group of children with the grand prize of $5,000 worth of athletic equipment. We do however understand how home-schooled children could benefit from this type of prizing and will make sure eligibility is open to everyone in future promotions.

We appreciate your feedback and will make sure a similar situation does not happen in the future.

If anyone has any additional comments to make regarding this contest, please email Scholastic directly at P&Cconnects@scholastic.com and we will respond promptly to your concerns. Other email addresses or phone numbers shown in this blog will not reach individuals who are equipped to help you. Again, please direct all comments/inquiries to P&Cconnects@scholastic.com and we would be more than happy to speak  with you regarding this.

correction from HSLDA

======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
======================================================================

Missouri: Correction--Highway Patrol Bill Fails to Gain Passage

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

The bill that would have created a level educational field for all
persons applying to the State Highway Patrol unfortunately failed to
gain passage.  (This corrects our e-lert dated May 19, 2008.)

S.B. 723 was non-controversial.  It simply provided that anyone who
completed high school in compliance with Missouri law was eligible to
apply to become a highway patrol officer (the law previously required
an "accredited" education or a GED).

It passed the Senate unanimously on February 28.  The House passed a
slightly modified version by a vote of 141 to 7 on May 14.  Even with
this overwhelming margin, it had to go back to the Senate for approval
because the House modified the bill slightly.

The Senate put the bill in line to be acted upon.  However, other
bills claimed the attention of the Senate, and the clock ran out on
the legislative session before the Senate could perform the
essentially administrative job of voting on the bill.  There is no
doubt the Senate would have approved the bill overwhelmingly if a vote
had taken place.

We look forward to this bill becoming law during the next legislative
session.

Subway rejects homeschoolers

On Saturday, May 24, I received the following notice about a contest for children sponsored by Subway (the sub sandwich restaurant) that specifically excludes homeschoolers.  Now, I do not necessarily endorse or support any boycotts.  My family makes our decisions as to whom we shall patronize based on our own criteria, but I would not demand that others make the same decisions because everyone's situation is different.  However, I am passing this along for your information and consideration.  First, I checked the website and it does specifically say:

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted.

I copied and pasted the above directly from the website.  Second, I am sorely tempted to make the comment that the website must have been put together by a public schooler but I will resist the temptation because typographical errors (Untied States) can happen to anyone.

Kim Bowlin wrote on Fri May 23, 2008 3:14 pm (PDT) :

Please join us in boycotting Subway restaurants for their exclusion
of "home schools" in their "Every Sandwich Tells a Story" contest.
Visit
http://www.subwayfreshbuzz.com/kids/contest.aspx  to see for
yourself that though they encourage students in every other educational
setting to participate, they specifically exclude "home schools".
Also, the contest is only open to legal residents of the Untied
States. (This statement found at very bottom of page, white letters on
green background: "NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the Untied States who are currently
over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or
parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be
accepted.") Could anyone please find that on the map and let me know
where such country exists?
Thanks!

NATIONAL MEETING ON ASTRONOMY EDUCATION
May 31 and June 1, 2008
Renaissance Grand Hotel, 800 Washington Ave., St. Louis, MO  63101
Educators from around the U.S. (and more than a dozen other countries) will gather in St. Louis to discuss the upcoming International Year of Astronomy, and how best to share the excitement of observing the sky and understanding the universe with students, teachers, the media, and the public at large.

Note from Scott Woodruff at HSLDA

Missouri--Homeschoolers Win Access
to Highway Patrol as Legislature Closes

As the legislature closed Friday, May 16, it finished work on the
passage of S.B. 723, removing hurdles for homeschool graduates to
obtain employment in the State Highway Patrol. Missouri homeschool
grads had experienced difficulty because applicable law required an
"accredited" high school diploma or GED. S.B. 723 adopts the very
sensible policy that anyone completing high school in accordance with
Missouri's compulsory attendance law is qualified to apply.  This bill
received very little opposition on its way to passage.

Thank you for your calls in opposition to H.B. 2078, the driver's
license bill.  They made a difference! The bill died with the close of
the legislature.  Your calls sent a loud and clear message that the
homeschool community was united in opposing the bad policy this bill
would have created.

This misguided bill would have made it much harder for young
adults--including homeschoolers--to get a learner's permits or a
driver's license by conditioning them on school performance.  If this
bill had passed, it would have given the Department of Education broad
de facto power to regulate homeschooling.  Families wanting their
mature young adults to move into the responsibility of driving a car
would have had new regulations and bureaucracy to battle.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Rodney Howard, tried a last-minute
parliamentary maneuver to get the bill passed despite homeschool
opposition.  He attempted to get his bill's language inserted into
another bill that appeared destined to become law. The bill he
attempted to use as a host passed--but because of careful work by FHE
(Families for Home Education), it passed without his bill's language!
Another similar bill, H.B. 1717, never made it out of committee.

H.B. 1748, which would have made 6-year-olds subject to state-mandated
compulsory school attendance, never made it out of house committee.

H.B. 1319 would have created tax credits for businesses that hired
lower-income teens for summer jobs.  HSLDA opposed the bill because
its requirements for school performance could have created paths for
greater regulation of homeschooling.  The bill passed the House, and
cleared the Senate Ways and Means Committee, but never made it to the
Senate floor for a vote, so it died as the legislature ended.

Thank you for standing with us for freedom.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Woodruff
HSLDA Staff Attorney

Stories for Children Magazine

(The following review of mine appeared in HomeSchoolBuzz.com's weekly newsletter on Sat., May 17, 2008; for more information, go to http://homeschoolbuzz.com ).

Stories for Children Magazine, is a free monthly E-zine (online magazine) for children ages 3 to 12 years old that takes young people on an adventure into the World of Ink. Each issue is loaded with fun stories, articles, puzzles, children's book reviews, crafts, poems, and an interview with a children's author or illustrator. It was voted one of the Top Ten Best E-zines in Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, Cover Art, and Bookstores on the web in the Preditors and Editors Readers Poll 2007. There are stories by some of the hottest new children's writers of both fiction and non-fiction in three categories, ages 3-6, 7-9, and 10-12. In addition, there are stories by young authors. While submitting stories to children's magazines, editor VS Grenier was shocked to discover that few magazines allowed underage writers. She vowed to change this and has done so with Stories for Children Magazine. Thus one thing that makes Stories for Children Magazine different is that they also publish stories written and illustrated by children and teens and encourage readers who are future writers and illustrators to submit to all areas of the magazine. What I like about Stories for Children Magazine is that it is a safe place for children to go on the Internet where they can find something that is both fun and educational. I would encourage all homeschooled students who are budding writers to send stories. The current website is http://storiesforchildren.tripod.com but it will be moving in June to http://storiesforchildrenmagazine.org .

Here is some further information about the editor: Grenier also freelances as a children's and teen's author, in addition to running her own critique service. Having learned how to hone her writing skills at the Institute of Children's Literature, she is also a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), Author's Coalition, and Musing Our Children. Currently, she lives in Utah with her husband, their two children, and the family's two big fat cats.

good news from the legislature

Today I received the following e-mail from Brad Haines, Executive Director with Families for Home Education (FHE) of MIssouri, our statewide homeschooling organization.

All,

WE WON!!! Quinn thought he got his language giving control of driving privileges to government schools tagged on to a transportation bill. It was REMOVED during the conference session, and passed in the Senate before he knew it. Then he made a "bother" of himself trying to get the House to reject the committee report. It passed the Hose WITHOUT his language and is on the way to the Governor's office. (It may be a few days before the FINAL language is on the website... Look for SB930, as truly agreed and passed.)

Also, Delbert Scott's bill allowing home educated grads to enter the State Hwy Patrol Academy on equal footing passed and is also on its way to the Gov.

Finally, the home school PROJECT bill naming the ice cream cone as the "official state dessert" passed and is likewise ready for Gov. Blunt's signature.

All in all, a pretty good (though tense) year.

In Christ's Service to Home Educators,

Brad L. Haines
