FRIDAY, Mar. 30, 2007

8:30 to 9:30 am
Auditorium--Debra Bell, author of The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling: Six Ingredients of a Successful Homeschool.  Success in homeschooling has little to do with degrees or teaching certificates, rather it has a lot to do with Christian character. Here are the six areas of your life you need to build upon for a long term, successful program.  Plenty of suggestions for strengthening these crucial areas in your home.
Room #1--Scott and Kris Wightman, authors of College Without Compromise: Choosing Curriculum – The Elementary Grades.  For the beginner, making sense of the myriad of curriculum methods and publisher choices is one of the most challenging parts of this homeschool experience. Should you stick with one publisher? Should you follow a system? Or is it possible to pick and choose to best fit your family’s situation and strengths? And maybe most importantly, can your curriculum choices help make your school day smooth and joyful? We are very glad to share the wisdom we have gleaned from you over our years at the Homeschool Sampler.
Room #2--Steve Demme, founder of Math U See: Place Value in the Decimal System, and How to Have Fun Teaching It.  With a unique and humorous approach, Steve demonstrates place value using the manipulative blocks on location at Decimal Street.  He shows how this important topic impacts arithmetic, regrouping (carrying and borrowing), double digit multiplication, and division.
Room #3, Vendor Workshop--John Thrower of Family Vision Library: Are Classics really Classics?"  A discerning view of what God's standards for a classic book is and what the worlds standard is.
Special Needs Room A--Vision Related Learning Problems by Dr. Tom Cunningham, Cunningham Vision
Special Needs Room B--Therapeutic Listening by Carrie Salyer, Occupational Therapist with Leaps and Bounds

9:00 am to 9:00 pm--Vendor hall open

9:45 to 10:45 am
Auditorium--Mark Hamby, founder of Lamplighter Publishing:  Life Transforming Literature and Character.  During his twenty-four years of searching for the most life-changing Christian literature available, Mark discovered that inspiring literature that modeled Christ-like character was the catalyst that awakens a child's drive to become all that God intended. Through an inspiring, informative, and dramatized lecture, Mark will “demonstrate” the power of literature.
Room #1--Janice Price, curriculum consultant with Rainbow Resource Center:  Where's the Road Map?  Deciding to homeschool is just the beginning . . . . of the decisions.  Are you traveling through the overwhelming terrain of curriculum choices without a road map?  Janice Price, homeschool veteran and curriculum specialist for Rainbow Resource Center utilizes a decision matrix to help you sort through a few basic family factors and to point you in the right direction.
Room #2--Deana Haines, with Families for Home Education:  Home Education on a Shoestring Budget.  Veteran home school mom, Deana Haines will share how she was able to home educate their four children, and occasionally other children, without breaking the bank. Most home school families live on one income in a two income world and through re-cycling, re-using, and a lot of creativity it is possible to provide a quality education without excessive costs.
Room #3--Vendor Workshop, Tameka Easter of MOST--Missouri's 529 College Savings Plan.  This workshop will highlight the importance of saving for college and how the MOST plan makes it easy and affordable.
Special Needs Room A--The Autism Spectrum and Oxidative Stress: A Roadmap for Effective Treatment  by .Dr. Bill Walsh, Pfeiffer Treatment Center

11:00 am to 12:00 noon
Auditorium--Mike Donnelly, attorney with Home School Legal Defense Association:  Defending the Freedom to Homeschool.  Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, but forces are still at work to capture our children’s minds, bodies, and souls. These forces seek to erode our current freedoms and our will to preserve them. What can we do to ensure that the blessings and freedom we have to homeschool are secured for posterity? Come hear HSLDA Attorney and homeschooling father Michael Donnelly answer that question.
Room #1--Brad Haines, executive director with Familes for Home Education:  For Dad's Only.  Not really, as ladies are welcome, but it focuses on the Dad's role. Includes the benefits of choosing home ed, plus what Dad's can do, such as help select curriculum, teach one or more subjects or vo-tech enrichment, devotionals, PRAY, etc. It has been a very well received workshop in the past.
Room #2--Brian Rigsby, founder of Edu Track:  Record Keeping and the Law in Missouri.  "Capture your yesterdays, document your today's, and plan for your tomorrows."  Learn the fundamentals and importance of keeping accurate homeschool records, and discover how in just a few minutes a week, you can completely organize your home school using the program's easy to use lesson planning, record-keeping, transcripts, report cards, forms, awards and certifications, attendance tracking, student data tracking, graphical chore charts and more!  Brian Rigsby is President/CEO of ConTECH Solutions, Inc., the company that developed the Edu-Track Home School organizational software. Since 2002, he and his wife Nancy have been conducting homeschool organization and record-keeping workshops across the nation at various homeschool state and regional conventions.

1:30 to 2:30 pm
Auditorium--Debra Bell, author The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling:  Determining Your Child's Learning Style.  Save time, money and frustration. Before you buy anything, determine your child's learning style and then choose curriculum to match it. Does your son need to do to learn?  Is your daughter motivated better in a group? Does your child need structure and routine or flexibility and independence?  Four types of learners explained with sample programs for each.  (This material is similar to learning style info in Cathy Duffy's book, but with my own experience and adaptation to a home school setting. If folks have not been exposed to learning style information, they find this workshop very helpful. This is our top selling tape.)

3:00 to 4:00 pm
Auditorium--Todd Akin, United States Representative for Missouri's Second District.  How often do you get to hear from a homeschooling dad of 22 years who is an avid history buff and a United States Congressman?  Todd Akin is all of these things and more.  Todd loves teaching about the founding of our country and the formula that makes America great.  The Congressman plans to talk about the history of homeschooling in Missouri, as well as encouraging the group as their Representative in the United States Congress.  Because of the nature of his work, Congressman Akin's ability to speak at the Expo is tentative and will be dependent upon his schedule, so there is always a good chance that something will arise to keep him from being with us.  Therefore, we do have a backup plan in case Mr. Akin is kept from speaking at the Expo.  We have asked Brad and Deana Haines, executive directors of Families for Home Education (FHE), our statewide homeschooling organization for Missouri, who will be at the Expo, to speak, if necessary, on "Show-Me Homeschools" - An overview of home education in Missouri, including a brief history of home education in general, home education in Missouri, demographics, events, and opportunities (such as college admissions, etc.). However, at this point, it does look as if the Congressman will be able to speak.
Room #1--Aimee Folmer, founder of Operation 3:15 Creation Ministry:  Using Creation Science to Build A Biblical World View in Your Children.  Learn how to teach kids of any age how to think biblically in the area of Creation vs. Evolution.  We will look at some of the many places that evolution is promoted in our society and discuss ways to help our children see these things through biblical glasses, as well as reach others through creation evangelism.  You will also get practical, hands on ideas for teaching creation science to kids of any age as well as find out about curriculum resources on this topic.  Although you will get ideas for many topics, if you have a dinosaur lover in the family you won't want to miss this!
Room #2--Rhonda Barfield, author of Real Life Homeschooling:  Trouble in Mothersville.  Are you having a rotten day--again?  Tired of mothering?  Worn out from all the responsibilities?  Sure, you love your kids, but how do you get past all the trouble they cause and learn to really enjoy them?  Rhonda will share several personal storeis (as well as others' stories) in this fast paced, down to earth workshop.  Learn some of the causes of 'Trouble in Mothersville' and how to correct them by implementing the 6 R's.  Bring your questions for a group discussion.
Room #3--Vendor Workshop, Joanne Calderwood of URtheMom.com (1st part):  The Self-Teaching Method of Education Part One explains the need to train a child's heart before true self-learning can take place. It is a very important pre-cursor, and it also gives parents the opportunity to examine their homes and their hearts to see if peace reigns in both areas. This workshop is relevant for parents with children of all ages.

Special Needs Room B--Attachment - Getting Your Child’s Heart by Patty Yager, M.O.M.

4:30 to 5:30 pm
Auditorium--Mike Donnelly, attorney with Home School Legal Defense Association:  Why Home School?  Homeschooling works. Studies show that homeschooled children perform 20–30 points higher than their peers on standardized tests, and that homeschoolers are more civic-minded and socially prepared to deal with the “real world.”  Homeschooling also protects children from negative cultural influences rampant in public schools.  These are all valid reasons to homeschool, but there is one reason more important than any of them. Come hear more in this talk by HSLDA Attorney and homeschooling father Michael Donnelly.
Room #1--Donna Krahn, curriculum consultant with Rainbow Resource Center:  Bring Out the Scientist in Your Child.  Enthusiasm is contagious!  Does your attitude about science need a shot of enthusiasm?  Absorb some from Rainbow's curriculum specialist as she energetically involves you in user-friendly hands-on science projects while supplying a welath of ideas and resources.  Pass on the exhileration of science to your children.
Room #2--Brad Haines, executive director with Families for Home Education.  Government Programs and the Home Schooler.  "I'm from the Government and I'm here to . . . take over your family."  A discussion of government agencies and programs that are co-opting the family in general, and home educators in particular, with focus on why home educators should avoid government
"handouts" in whatever form.
Room #3--Vendor Workshop, Joanne Calderwood of URtheMom.com (2nd part):  The Self-Teaching Method of Education Part Two is the actual hands-on workshop of teaching/training a child to become self-teaching. This workshop is also relevant for parents with children of all ages. I teach on the benefits and freedom that come from enabling one's student to become a self-learner. It is an encouraging and confidence-boosting session for both parents and students! Students are encouraged to attend as well. A free booklet is given to all participants which recaps both sessions, and it contains a wealth of additional, uncopyrighted information to further the message of Home Educating Freedom for all via self-learning for life!
Special Needs Room A--Reading Problems by Ken Schmidt, Founder and Director of Hope Remedial Services
Special Needs Room B--My Child Won’t do His Work–What can I do? by Patty Yager, homeschool mom.

7:30 to 8:30 pm
Auditorium--Mark Hamby, founder of Lamplighter Publishing:  The Strong Willed Parent (or Raise them UP, Don't Crush them DOWN).  Based on the Greek understanding of Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21, Mark will paint and unforgettable picture for parents who are unknowingly quenching the spirit of their children. Children who are fully loved, fully known, without any fear of rejection, will become children who possess a low level of fear and a high level of risk and reasoning. Children who develop a high level of risk and reasoning, are children who see failure as stepping stones for success. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Success is failure upon failure, with great enthusiasm!” You will not want to miss this session of great enthusiasm, instruction, and inspiration!

SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 2007

8:30 to 9:30 am

This session will give you some very practical and encouraging ideas to make the middle and high school years the best ever. A firm purpose, a clear look ahead, and a plan to lead your young adult into the future is the focus.
Room #2--Steve Demme, founder of Math U See:  Pride, Expectations, Hope and Redemption.  This workshop is Steve's testimony of the last eighteen years as the father of a Down's Syndrome child. He shares what his family has learned as a result of Johnny's physical problems, unique development, and the special, rewarding, and joyful role he has played in their lives. Built on these foundational truths, parents will then be guided through the necessary steps to help their children move from “other dependence” to “independence” to a “Christ-dependent” lifestyle. As young people display bold, voluntary love toward those in authority, they will then be free to follow their God-given calling and destiny.
(Repeat)

These can be taught at anytime in the homeschool setting. The Haines family learned about Missouri history through real-life hands-on activities, re-inforcing learning by taking day trips throughout the state. Additionally, it is imperative that every student learn the fundamentals of their state and national government systems in order to assume their roles as responsible citizens in the future.
